Early Years at Sathorn, Sukhumvit 107 and Green Valley Campus: Nursery, Kindergarten & Reception: Age 2 - 5
Early Years Principles & Curriculum
Nursery, Kindergarten and Reception class
teachers follow the principles and curriculum of
the Early Years Foundation Stage framework for
England.
Principles reflected in the programme:
• Every child is a competent learner from birth
who can be resilient, capable, confident and
self-assured.
• Children are encouraged to develop positive
relationships. Partnership with parents is
crucial to this development.
• The learning environment plays a key role in
the children’s development.
• All children learn in different ways and at
different rates.
• All areas of learning are equally important
and inter-connected.
Interactive Learning
Teaching and learning for the children in our
Early Years Department has a high emphasis
on structured, creative play and interactive
learning.
The teaching programme is organised into topics
or themes to ensure that the children are given a
wide range of real-life and everyday experiences.
It is very important in the Early Years section of
the school that our teachers plan activities for
both the inside and outside areas so that the
children see them as one learning environment.
The environment is organised into a variety of
inviting learning areas that change and evolve
over time, whether they be a book corner,
mathematics area or a stimulating role play area.
14
Early Years at Sathorn, Sukhumvit 107 and Green Valley Campus: Nursery, Kindergarten & Reception: Age 2 - 5
Early Learning Goals
• Personal and Emotional Development
• Communication, Language and Literacy
• Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
• Knowledge and Understanding of the World
• Physical Development
• Creative Development
Assessment & Achievement
Our experienced Early Years teachers are
continuously assessing the children’s progress
through observation and conversation.
Dialogue with parents is an essential part of
this assessment procedure. Teachers build
up a portfolio of children’s progress through
photographs and recorded observations. These
form the basis for discussions with parents, who
are also invited to contribute to these portfolios. ’‘
The Early Years Programme
at St. Andrews is a happy
and exciting experience
for your child that will
build a positive attitude
towards learning. This safe
and relaxed environment
is led by a team of highly
experienced teachers who
specialise in Early Years
education.

Sathorn and Sukhumvit 107 Campus - British National Curriculum
Children study in Key Stages One and Two,
from the British National Curriculum which
is also supplemented to reflect the needs of
students living in an international setting in
Thailand. The result is that the curriculum
taught is broadly based and promotes the
students’ moral, cultural, mental, social and
physical development. Where appropriate,
the curriculum is taught through themes to
ensure that learning is relevant. Children love
to become involved in topics and this leads to
them carrying out independent research. The
topics are planned carefully so that they are
appropriate for our children in our international
setting and enable skills to be taught within
a rich learning environment. Subject areas
include English, Maths, Science, Information and
Communication Technology, History, Geography,
Design Technology, Art, Physical Education, Music,
Foreign Languages and Personal, Social and
Health Education.

emotional and cultural needs in addition to
academic welfare, through a comprehensive,
inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning.
The programme also encourages international-
mindedness, a positive attitude to learning and
reflections on real life. The subject areas of
Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Social
Studies, Art, Personal and Social Education,
Physical Education and Modern Languages are
taught through interdisciplinary themes in order
to help the students make connections between
the subjects, thereby facilitating more effective
learning. Technology is integrated across our
curriculum to enhance student learning and
build student confidence in their ability to
effectively use technology to acquire, process
and communicate information.
Assessment & Achievement
We have high expectations for our children
and carry out regular assessments to ensure
that they are making good progress. Attitude,
learning skills, social relationships and effort
are considered equally important when looking
at the overall development of the child. These
assessments allow us to refine our teaching and
learning to make sure that the individual needs of
all our children are being met.
An array of English and international standardised
teacher assessments are utilised so that
attainment can be compared to children in
the UK and other international settings. This,
matched with feedback from past parents, shows
us that children at St. Andrews match and in
many cases, exceed the attainment of children in
England and other international settings.

IGCSE CourseStudents in Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) follow
a two-year IGCSE course. We offer a broad and

Early Examinations
Although examinations are usually taken at
the end of Year 11, some of our students have
taken examinations early, so that they can then
take more advanced courses the following year.
Examples of this include students taking IGCSE
English as a Second Language exam in Year 9,
offering them the opportunity to follow the First
Language English Course in Years 10 and 11.
Assessment & Achievement
Assessment is continuous and systematic; this
allows for personalised learning which ensures
that students make good progress towards
attaining their potential IGCSE grades and beyond
into the IB Diploma and the university of their
choice.
Regular progress reports are sent to parents and
parent/teacher conferences are held to discuss
each child’s social and academic progress. ’‘

International Baccalaureate (IB) D iploma Programme (DP) at Sukhumvit 107 and Green Valley Campus: Year 12 – 13: Age 16 - 18
We offer the International Baccalaureate
(IB) Diploma Programme of studies which is
recognised by universities in 124 countries and is
designed to be taken over two years (16-18 years
old). Research conducted in the UK reveals the
fact that university admissions offices recognise
that the skills developed by IB students make
them highly desirable applicants for university
courses.
Green Valley and Sukhumvit 107 campuses are IB
World Schools authorised to offer the IB Diploma.
In addition to the substantial knowledge
gained, the skills developed during our two
year programme of study will benefit students
who need to learn the value of information and
develop independent study skills. These are both
important for university success when the higher
order thinking skills of analysis, synthesis and
evaluation are constantly required.
The DP includes six academic subjects, of which
students must choose three at Higher Level (HL)
and three at Standard Level (SL) plus the central
core which consists of the extended essay, theory
of knowledge, and creativity, action, service
(CAS). Students study two modern languages,
a humanities or social science subject, an
experimental science, mathematics and another
subject including the arts.

Dutch Stream at Green Valley
The Dutch Stream at St. Andrews International
School, Green Valley Campus started in August
2006. At that time 12 students attended Dutch
lessons. Now, six years later, 50 students from
Belgium and Holland get to learn the language in a
fun, challenging and ever-changing environment.
Our lessons are centred around two aims:
1: To learn to read, write, understand and enjoy the
Dutch language;
2: To get to know their country; what is the culture
of Holland and Belgium?
For learning the language we use text books ratified
by the Dutch government and used in most of the
Dutch schools in Holland. Besides, we also have fun
computer games to help them to correctly spell
Dutch words. We shouldn’t forget to mention the
latest addition in our classroom, which helps us to
convey the lessons: our interactive whiteboard.
Our next step in striving to improve our standard
of teaching is the use of iPads during lessons. Next
to that, we keep our standards high and pupils
motivated by refreshing our library with new and
exciting books for all ages.
As mentioned, besides learning the Dutch
language, we also focus on main cultural events
in the Netherlands and Belgium, for example:
Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day), Prinsjesdag and the
main event for children: Sinterklaas (Dutch version
of Santa Claus). The pictures on this page are a
reflection of the fun and excitement the students
experience during those celebrations.
The Dutch Stream is fully integrated with the
International department. That’s why Sinterklaas is
not only celebrated with Dutch Students, but with
all students from Year 1 to Year 4. Dutch Students
also mingle during school activities, such as: book
week, International Day and science fair.
22
Dutch Stream at Green Valley
The Dutch Stream provides lessons for children aged
4 to 18, in other words, from Reception onwards to
the International Baccalaureate Diploma (DP) Dutch
Self-Taught Programme. The DP was started three
years ago and so far 100% of students have passed
the test.
The Dutch Stream has been visited twice by the
Inspector of Education. Both times our Primary
and Secondary divisions have been accredited
and regarded as very successful therefore totally
integrated with St. Andrews, Green Valley.
The Dutch Department is financially supported by
the Dutch government. This enables us to keep
the Dutch curriculum up to date and supports our
library and other resources regarding Dutch lessons.
We look forward to growing our Dutch Stream at
Green Valley and other St. Andrews campuses.
