Pastor Dear Friends: More than any other book, the Bible offers an amazing collection of fascinating characters and personalities. They are all given differ-
ent coverage and roles. Some of these biblical personalities might inspire us and enkindle our faith…
The Prophet Amos A resume can only give you a small glimpse into a person’s abilities and talents. If he had to write a resume, Amos would have included
shepherd, herdsman, and sycamore fig farmer. In considering him for the job of prophet, we might have discarded his resume. But God
sees something in him that will make Amos a compelling prophet. Living in the eighth century BC, Amos’ jobs have given him a keen
glimpse into the disparity between the rich and the poor. God sends him to the northern kingdom of Israel where the increase of wealth is
matched with a decline of religious faith and indifference to the poor. Amos, without any special training and relying only on the power of
God, finds his voice. He is not the kind of prophet who uses poetic words and beautiful images. Amos is blunt as he insists those who fol-
low God must be people of justice. Prayers and rituals are meaningless if they do not lead to service. It is believed that his career as proph-
et lasted less than a year, yet Amos’ voice still challenges us today. No special skills are needed to work for justice, only a heart that sees
God in every human need.
The Prophet Jonah Jonah might well complain that people think of the whale more than of him. Jesus does not scorn the story himself: “Just as Jonah was in
the belly of the whale three days and three nights” (Matthew 12:40). What that scene with the whale looks like is left to the imagination,
but we know that Jonah and the Ninevites to whom he preaches, are humans like us. While Jonah’s faith impels him to convert others, he is
incredulous at its power. He has not envisioned the possibility that his faith might actually bring others to faith. Great things will be accom-
plished by faith so long as it is faith in God and not in ourselves. To keep faith is virtuous, but it is not a thing to be kept to oneself, like a
firefly that soon fades in a sealed jar. The way to keep faith is to spread it. Jonah does that to his own astonishment, and this is credited by
“the Author and Finisher of our faith” when he tells those who ask for a miracle to bolster their trust in God: “At the judgment, the men of
Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and there is something greater
than Jonah here” (Matthew 12:41; Luke 11:32).
Mary Magdalene Mary Magdalene enjoys a special closeness to Christ. She is mentioned in all four of the Gospels. She is one of the Galilean women who
follow Jesus as he journeys from one town and village to another, proclaiming the Kingdom of God. She witnesses the crucifixion. She sits
opposite the sepulcher and sees where he is buried. She brings spices to anoint his body. She sees the empty tomb and runs to tell the
others. She stands outside the empty tomb and weeps. She sees two angels in white. Perhaps most movingly, “When he had risen, early on
the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons” (Mark 16:9). When seven de-
mons have gone out of you, you tend to be very aware that at any moment seven, or ten, or a hundred more, could take their place. You
tend to want to stay very close to Christ. To drive out seven demons costs. To sacrifice for people tends to make us love them all the more.
So maybe one of the things Mary Magdalene tells us is that the more demons Christ has driven out, the more he wants to stay close to us
too. (NB: If I had any say {or the power}, I would have voted for her to be the first Pope).
Martha For many, the name of Martha is synonymous with anxiety and distraction. When Christ has come as a guest to her home, she begs him to
instruct her sister Mary, who sits at his feet, to help her serve the meal. Instead, Christ gently corrects Martha, insisting that Mary has cho-
sen “the better part” (Luke 10:42). But Martha is not a one-sided biblical figure, a mere foil for her contemplative sister. She is a seek-
er, and, like her sister, desires to respond with her whole self to the call of Christ. In John’s Gospel, it is Martha, the “do-er,” who goes out
to meet Christ before he even enters the town. There Martha boldly proclaims to Christ her belief that, had he arrived earlier, her brother
Lazarus, who has just died, would yet be with them. “Even now,” she declares, “I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give
you” (John 11:22). When Jesus questions her, Martha testifies to her faith in the resurrection of the dead - a pious Jewish belief. But
Christ wants to draw her to himself: “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25). Martha, undaunted, responds wholeheartedly: “I
have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world” (John 11:27). Despite her anxiety
and distraction, something else has been at work in Martha - she has been captured by Christ.
Something to think about:
“Reading the Bible without meditating on it is like eating without chewing.” God bless your summer with good things!
