Hello,
In the past few weeks I had mentioned some different ways of prayer,
Eucharistic Adoration or the Stations of the Cross specifically, that we might
consider during Lent. Today I wanted to mention a few other opportunities at our
parish to grow in our faith.
Last week Wednesday we had our first of hopefully a long tradition of
Speakers after our Noon Mass. Fr. James Mason, rector of Kenrick-Glennon
Seminary, talked about St. Francis of Assisi and how Francis addressed some of
the challenges they had in their quickly growing order as ways we can relate to in
addressing challenges in our lives today. We were thrilled to have 60 people
come down to the parish hall to hear Fr. Mason, have a simple lunch, and we
were done by 1pm. We plan on holding this with a different speaker every third
Wednesday of the month.
Also last Wednesday we had our adult faith formation series “Pivotal Players”
that watched a short video where Bishop Robert Barron talks about St. Augustine
and then we discussed some of his contributions to the Church. This was the first
of a four week series that continues from 12 weeks on different pivotal players in
the Catholic Church that we had over the last year.
Actually this brings up a different manner to grow in our faith which we
might practice a few minutes at a time or for extended periods that I used the
other week when writing about Eucharistic Adoration, videos. No matter what
the topic of our faith that you want to reflect on or find out more about you can
usually go on YouTube and do a quick search and find many video clips to
watch. Not that I would support them all, but you can find a few you can clearly
trust, like Bishop Robert Barron’s. Others we might approach a little more
skeptically, but like any source we need to listen for the truth and decide who we
can trust. If you prefer you can even find many old clips from Bishop Fulton
Sheen on-line.
Another different opportunity we have at our parish this weekend is “The
Sounds of Holy Week” Concert that our choir along with that of Our Lady of
Lourdes and Christ the King is performing this Sunday, March 31st at 3pm here at
St. Joseph Church. Not only can we listen to the beautiful music, but we can
also listen to the words of prayer to reflect on and open and lift our hearts to God.
As we continue on our Lenten journey we need to be open to the many ways
we can grow in our faith. It is easy at times to consider it would be great if we
had other opportunities, and we can see how we might bring those about, but also
recognize the many opportunities that we already have and consider how we do
or don’t take advantage of them.
Peace,
Fr. Nick

Come back today to hear the choirs of Our Lady of
Lourdes, Christ the King, and St. Joseph as they present “The Sounds of Holy Week”, Holy Week as heard
throughout the centuries. Hear Latin classics such as “Ubi
Caritas”, “Panis Angelicus”, “Tantum Ergo”, and “Pie Jesu”.
The concert will be here at St. Joseph on Sunday, March
31 at 3:00 pm followed by refreshments in the Parish Hall.
PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION UPDATE
Over the past several weeks and continuing for the rest of the school year the 6th
and 7th grade students have been learning about the Church’s practice of reading
sacred scripture in a deeply prayerful manner. This method of prayer has root in
the practice of ancient Jewish scripture study and in the biblical commentaries of
great saints like St. Jerome. The actual process that we use today was described in
the twelfth century by a Carthusian monk. We call this prayerful way of reading
scripture Lectio Divina, literally meaning “divine
reading.” We are all called to read sacred scrip-
ture on a regular basis, Lectio gives us a way to
pray with the Word of God and to help us
discern is call for our lives. To find out more
about Lectio Divina you can watch this video on
YouTube : https://youtu.be/gKYEOc3ik9k
Pivotal players
It’s not too late to come join us in learning about St. Au-gustine and St. Benedict and what makes these two Saints
“Pivotal Players.” Two sessions will be offered, Wednes-
days at 1:00 pm or Wednesdays at 7:00 pm. The
dates for both are March 20, 27, April 3, and 10th.
Spring Garden
Clean Up
This is prime time to do some
spring clean-up and planting
for our beautiful St. Joseph’s
garden and yard so we can en-
joy the gardens all summer. It
is fun whether you can spend a
half hour or the whole morn-
ing and we get to meet and
greet others from our parish.
So come help on Saturday, April 13, 2019 from
9:00am to 12 noon. Or adopt a plot that you
may wish weed or trim for the entire gardening
season.
We welcome all. Bring your rake and whatever
you would normally use to clean your home
yard. If there are questions or comments, sugges-
tions or advice, please contact: Ann or Thom

Experience Making
a Difference!
The Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC) is an exciting
program that invites faith-motivated volunteers to
serve with the poor and marginalized. Volunteers
are age 50 and better, retired or semi-retired. Vol-
unteers reflect and pray in the Ignatian tradition on
their service, meet monthly with other IVC Volun-
teers and with a spiritual reflector.
If service, prayer, and reflection interest you, con-
tact Sr. Amy Diesen, OSF for more information at
314-758-7147 or [email protected]. Or come
to an information session with current volunteers
at 10:00am on April 11th, 2019 at the Il Monastero Banquet Center (3050 Olive St, St. Louis, MO
63103). Please RSVP to Sr. Amy.
Treasures from our Tradition
Today, Laetare Sunday, breaks the somberness of Lent for a little
rejoicing, and the readings all summon us to an awareness of rec-
onciliation. One of the best-loved stories of our tradition is to-
day’s Gospel story of the runaway son and the prodigal father.
Prodigal, of course, is an adjective meaning spendthrift or extrava-
gant to a degree bordering on recklessness, and although the boy
maxes out the credit cards, it is really the father who is prodigal
with forgiveness.
Part of the excitement of this Laetare Sunday is rooted in the ancient catechumenate. Long ago, midway
through Lent, the elect were focusing more and more on the gift of reconciliation accomplished for them
by Christ and about to be realized in the Easter sacraments they were preparing to celebrate. In some plac-
es, the elect were even bedecked with roses on this day. A person bedecked with roses sticks out in a crowd; a person formed by the Eucharist and committed to living a life of reconciliation does, too. That’s
you!

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE -
A Journey in Contemplative
Prayer and Reflection
From June 17-28, 2019, Fr. Phil Krill will lead a contemplative
pilgrimage to the Holy Land. This is not a sight-seeing tour. Be-
ginning in Galilee and finishing in the Judean desert, we will visit
carefully selected sacred sites, absorbing the ethos of the places
where Jesus lived and taught. We will also seek to experience,
through a combination of lectio divina and contemplative prayer,
a strengthened sense of His risen Presence. Our pilgrimage to Israel will proceed at a very measured pace. No “off-the bus, on
-the-bus” rushing as is routine on most such tours. We will spend extended time at each sacred place, al-
lowing ample time for reflection and personal prayer. This is essentially a practicum in contemplative prac-
tice, employing a synergistic combination of lectio divina, contemplative prayer, group faith-sharing, and
spiritual direction.
For more information about this pilgrimage and/or to register, go to www.bibletrektours.com or call
George Makhlouf at 702-339-5533 or Father Phil Krill at 616-243-7566.
