These funds will be used to support the efforts of Catholic Charities USA and other Catholic agencies as they reach out to provide humanitarian aid in Texas and other affected parts of the Gulf Coast region. We will take a second collection for this purpose during all the Masses this weekend, September 9 and 10. You may also donate directly online by going to https://catholiccharitiesusa.org/.

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 10, 2017

From the Pastor:Thank you to everyone who worked on the St. Mary School float for the Popcorn Parade, especially Evelyn Lisiecki, who took charge of planning and building the float. It’s important to let our community know that our school is still open, active, and providing a quality Catholic education. I will be meeting with the School Advisory Board this Thursday evening, as we resume our monthly meetings.

On Wednesday afternoon, I will attend a meeting of the parish Worship Commission to look at the liturgical calendar from now until the end of 2017. Special events in this time period include three holy days of obligation (All Saints, Immaculate Conception, and Christmas), as well as All Souls Day and Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Please plan to attend the Parish Festival this Saturday evening from 5:00-10:00 p.m., in the gymnasium of the grade school. Remember that the Festival is one night only, so don’t miss the fun!

Today’s Gospel is one of only two places in the Gospels where Jesus uses the word “church.” Of course, the word is found in many other parts of the New Testament, but it’s noteworthy when the word is found on the lips of Our Lord Himself. In today’s Gospel the word is invested with great power. Jesus teaches that the judgment of the Church in a controversial matter should be considered final. This teaching is very challenging to many people today, who would prefer that the church never disagree with their own opinions.

Sincerely Yours, in Christ, Fr. Thomas Buffer

NURSERY: The Nursery is available at the 11:00 a.m. Mass each Sunday. Looking for a rewarding way to acquire service hours for Confirmation? Think about helping in the Nursery. Please call Angie at 419-834-5783 if you would like to help out.

Healing Blanket Ministry: Healing Blanket Ministry continues its mission to sew blankets. Would you like to join us in this ministry? We will supply the material for you to sew. We ask those who give a blanket to a loved one, to please sign the blue binder with your name and the name of the person receiving it. We need more people to sew the blankets. Please contact Elaine Kelly at 740-389-1018.

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 10, 2017

The rejuvenation of our St. Vincent de Paul facility continues. We have replaced our failed heating and air-conditioning unit, upgraded the interior of our thrift shop, added more storage space for our Food Pantry, and now we are ready to move to the next step.

The parking lot for our building was not repaired or replaced when we first occupied

the building nine years ago. It has become a safety issue for our volunteers and clients. Ice pools in the low spots and last year, we had several people slip and fall. There are areas where the asphalt has broken apart, and we have potholes that have needed patched each year. The time has come to replace it.

We have completed the bidding process and the work will start in September. The total cost will be over $20,000.00. The continued support of the parishioners of St. Mary is greatly appreciated.

WHEN YOU CARE ENOUGH TO GIVE THE VERY BEST: Give you and your spouse the gift of a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend! ALPHA is coming to you!

What is ALPHA?

Alpha is a series of 10 sessions exploring the Christian faith. No two Alphas look exactly the same, but they have three common elements: food, a talk and discussion.

FOOD: We start with a tasty meal, a good way to get to know each other.

TALK: Our video talks are designed to engage and inspire communication. They explore the big issues around faith, such as Who is Jesus? and How can we have faith?

DISCUSSION: Probably the most important part of any Alpha is the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the subject and discuss it in a small group. There’s no obligation to speak. And, there is nothing you can’t say. It’s a opportunity to hear from others and contribute in a friendly, open space.

Everyone from 18 to 118 is welcome!

Our sessions will be held at our Knights of Columbus Hall, 6:30-8:30 p.m., on Tuesdays, beginning October 3rd. Please register by calling Dolores at the Parish Office at 740-382-2118. The $20.00 per person registration fee includes all of your meals. (A companion booklet is available for an additional $5.00.)

All active and retired first responders in the greater Columbus area and their families are invited to attend; let us all join together to honor their service, ask for God’s blessings upon them, keep them safe, and guide them in their duties.
