Blessings / Bendiciones Fr. Pedro

Jesus Promises His Real Pres-ence in the Eucharist

John 6:4,11-14 - on the eve of

the Passover, Jesus performs the miracle of mul-tiplying the loaves. This was prophesied in the Old Testament (e.g., 2 Kings 4:43), and foreshad-ows the infinite heavenly bread which is JESUS HIMSELF. Mattew. 14:19, 15:36; Mark 6:41, 8:6; Luke 9:16 - these passages are additional accounts of the multi-plication miracles. This points to the Eucharist. Mattew. 16:12 - in this verse, Jesus explains His meta-phorical use of the term "bread." In John 6, Jesus elimi-nates any metaphorical possibilities. John 6:4 - Jesus is in Capernaum on the eve of Pass-over, and the lambs are gathered to be slaughtered and eaten. Look what He says: “The Jewish Passover Festival was near “ John 6:35,41,48,51 - Jesus says four times "I AM the bread from heaven." It is He, Himself, the eternal bread from heaven. John 6:27, 31,49 - there is a parallel between the man-na in the desert which was physically consumed, and this "new" bread which MUST be consumed. John 6:51-52- then Jesus says that the bread He is referring to is His flesh. The Jews take Him literally and immediately question such a teaching. How can this man give us His flesh to eat? John 6:53 - 58 - Jesus does not correct their literal interpretation. Instead, Jesus eliminates any metaphorical interpretations by swearing an oath and being even more literal about eating His flesh. In fact, Jesus says four times we must eat HIS FLESH and drink HIS BLOOD. Catholics thus believe that Jesus makes present His BODY and BLOOD in the sacrifice of the Mass. Protestants, if they are not going to become Catholic, can only argue that Jesus was somehow speak-

ing symbolically. This Sunday as we celebrate the greatest feast of THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST, let us pray asking Our Lord to feed us for the journey to Heaven.

FROM THE CATEHCISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURECH # 1333

At the heart of the Eucharistic celebration are the bread and wine that, by the words of Christ and the invocation of the Holy Spirit, become Christ's Body and Blood. Faithful to the Lord's command the Church con-

tinues to do, in his memory and until his glorious return, what he did on the eve of his Passion: "He took bread. . . ." "He took the cup filled with wine. . . ." The signs of bread and wine become, in a way sur-passing understanding, the Body and Blood of Christ; they continue also to signify the goodness of creation. Thus in the Offertory we give thanks to the Creator for bread and wine, fruit of the "work of human hands," but above all as "fruit of the earth" and "of the vine" - gifts of the Creator. The Church sees in the gesture of the king-priest Melchizedek, who "brought out bread and wine," a prefiguring of her own offering

I pledge allegience to the flag of the United States of America. And To the Republic, for which it stands, One Nation, Under God, Indi-visible, With Liberty and Justice, For All May the Lord Jesus Bless our nation

Laughter is good for the soul

This happened during one of the gas shortages. It was the day before July

4. Dozens of cars were waiting in line at a gas station, among them was a

priest. One of the attendants hurried up to him with this apology: "Sorry about the wait, Father, but it seems every-body waits until the last minute to gas up for a trip

they knew they were going to take." "I know what you mean," smiled the priest.

"I have the same problem in my business."
