Jesus preaches often about the Pharisees and the way they made a big show of being pious on the outside, while at the same time making life harder for those they were supposed to be serving. So when we hear about Je-sus and some of his disciples did not wash their hands, like the Pharisees, we might react negatively. The Phari-sees are not complaining about Dirty Hands. They are talking about pure hands. The handwashing they are talk-ing about is a purifying ritual. There is no passage in the Law of Moses that prescribes a practice for washing hands. At Jesus’s time, some people imitated the way Moses washed his hands at the altar as a form of piety. There were traditions for pu-rifications of cups and kettles and beds. Jesus questioned whether these purifying practices were making them bet-ter people. No amount of handwashing could cleanse them of the sins of evil thoughts, theft, murder, and adul-tery. In the Catholic Church, we have strong faith tra-ditions and the purpose of any faith tradition is to help us become more like Christ. If the traditions don’t serve a purpose, then they fall out of practice. What makes a difference is how we reflect God’s love. Traditions are not bragging points and they are not meaningless either. They help us understand what it means to have Jesus live in us and us in him. We are called to Justice and love for the vulnerable and afflicted. We hear echoes of the great commandment expressed by the prophet Micah- “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God.” What matters is what Jesus calls the greatest commandment- “You shall love the Lord with all our heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. The sec-ond is like it– You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these 2 commandments hang all the law and proph-ets.” Tradition helps us to follow these two command-ments.
