Introduction
When fighting without gloves, accuracy is by far the most important consideration
in striking. Missing the target will of course reduce the chances of causing injury to
your opponent, but more significantly it will increase the chances of you causing
serious damage to your own hands. Whilst timing, positioning and speed are all
important aspects of maintaining punching accuracy, there is a simpler way to
ensure you make contact with your target in the location you want. That is to hold
the target still. When you take hold of your opponent's head it is known as
Chancery, and can take a number of forms. In this book we will look at the form
known as Standing Chancery.
Standing Chancery
Standing Chancery is one of the most versatile positions utilised in Classical
Pugilism. It secures the head of your opponent in such a way as to be able to strike
to the face or “button” safely, as well as providing a platform for a large variety of
grapples, closes, throws, and wrestles.
The position is simple, when facing your opponent
one hand takes hold of the back of their neck and
with a small amount of downward force the
forearm and elbow are pushed into the centre of
their chest.
