Another beginning to yet another blissful year. Our learners were all very eager to
start off the new year. Seeing old friends again, making new friends, and a whole lot
of catching up. Even our little ones had a glimmer of excitement. The prospect of
this new found independence away from their parents. Very few teary eyes or sad
faces. The College was buzzing with joy and excitement, with beautiful weather and
blooming flowers glimmering in the sunlight. Truly a sign of a great year to come.

2018 Leadership Team
"The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be
bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but
not arrogant; have humor, but without folly." -Jim Rohn
As 2018 unfolds, our student body’s leadership team faces this challenge set ahead of
them. With all the support from staff, parents and their peers, we are confident that
they will lead with honor.
Class of 2017 Matric Results
As the College moves from strength to
strength, so too does the young student
leadership. Our head-boy and head girl
for 2017 took a moment of their last day
at the College to spread their wisdom
gained during their year of serving the
College. Reba Molotsi and Devan Good-
rum (2017) with Mano Phala and Zeenat
Patal (2018). A truly inspiring moment.
The future looks bright indeed.
Congratulations to the
following prefects of
2018:
Mano Phala and Zeenat
Patel, who have been
elected as the College’s
Head Boy and Head Girl.
Mahlape Makhetha and
Tsebo Matlala will be
responsible for the Arts
and Culture Portfolio.
Quondile Mhlanga and
Ron Bibby have their
work cut out for them
as they help make CBC
an eco-friendly College
with the Environmental
Portfolio.
Sazi Mqingwana and
Micaela Eckard will help
us reach out to our
communities with the
Outreach Portfolio.
Pravishen Govender and
Katherine Weber will
keep us on our toes with
the Sports Portfolio.
Ntheteng Mathunyane
and Signe Habbet have
the privilege of taking
care of the core of our
College, the Religious

CBC Theme for 2018
As is tradition in the College, we have an annual theme
which becomes our focus throughout the year. The theme
for 2018 is “There is Good News”.
We endeavor on a daily basis to proclaim the Good News
of our Lord and Savior, and thus we encourage our CBC
Mount Edmund family to live out this promise made by
God, that There Is Good News.
Let it be a practice we uphold both at school and at home
through respect for one another, faith in our beliefs and
trust in the Good News.

Welcome to the Foundation Phase
of CBC Mount Edmund. We have
an extraordinary family from the
age of 4 – 9. The year started well
and children, parents and staff are
all in the swing of every day school
life. Our information evenings were
well attended, thank you to the
parents who took time to listen and
to be involved in the daily events of
the day where your child spends
the most time. The Grade Parents
groups are up and running and all
willing parents are part of this ex-
tended family. Communication is so
important so please keep all chan-
nels open. Extra murals are running
smoothly and always remember to
be an active member of your child’s

One of our unique fea-
tures as a College is our
heritage. CBC Mount
Edmund is rooted in the
Edmund Rice tradition
and is part of a world-
wide network of
schools. We have a
culture of inclusivity and
aim to provide holistic
development to a child’s
mind, body and soul,
hence our Vision:
FAITH, LEADERSHIP,
EXCELLENCE.
Over the course of the
next few issues of
PULSE, we will uncap
various interesting facts
around the College,
including its history,
structural make-up, as
well as explanations
around a few Catholic
Education practices.
The College’s original structure
was situated in Lynnwood Road,
adjoining the University of Preto-
ria. The foundation stone of the
College was dedicated to St.
Gabriel of our Lady of Sorrows
who had been canonised at the
time. Established for the educa-
tion of boys as a day and board-
ing College, CBC St. Gabriel’s (as
it was formerly known) opened
its doors to 56 young boys
staffed by Brothers from Pretoria
as well as Ireland. The school
was blessed by Bishop Cox,
Catholic bishop of Pretoria.
By the 1960s the University of
Pretoria required the College’s
property in order to expand its
campus, and thus offered an al-
ternative site near Silverton. In
1969 the CBC to the new cam-
pus erected in Silverton. After
the move, it seemed only appro-
priate to rename the College,
hence it became known as Mount
Edmund. Today, we are proudly
known as CBC Mount Edmund in
honour of the founder of the
Christian Brothers’ Congrega-
tion, Edmund Ignatius Rice.
Saint Gabriels, Lynnwood Road established in September 1922
As the founder of the Christian
Brother’s Congregation, Edmund
Ignatius Rice stands as the corner-
stone of our College. The Edmund
statue is a universally understood
figure of welcome. He extends an
invitation to all people with his right
hand.
The right hand is conventionally
known as the more import and
hand (the hand you shake with,
write with, point with, proclaim and
lead with). His hand specifically
points to the chapel, Edmund was a
man of God and although he was a
practical man, he affirmed that God
is the center of our lives and thus
his schools rate religious, spiritual
and moral growth as a top priority.
In his left hand, he holds a book
which symbolizes both the Bible and
a textbook for learning. Edmund Ignatius Rice

During the weekend of 27 and 28 January 2018, CBC Mount
Edmund was part of a school exhibition hosted by EduMatics at
Brooklyn Mall.
The objective of this expo was to showcase the top schools in

from the Hospitality department came to represent their school
with pride.
The event was a huge success and went a long way in promot-
ing the different learning programmes available at our College.
If you know of any future opportunities for us to showcase our
beautiful College, please contact the Marketing Office
Well done to all the learners who took part. You all did amaz-
ing work.

Dear Parents/Guardians and Learners,
Welcome to a new school year and another exciting beginning. I’m sure that the wonderful holidays of Christmas are long forgotten and you are
feeling rushed already in the hustle and bustle of life. On behalf of all the staff at CBC Mount Edmund, we are excited about what has been planned
for 2018. We are confident that your children will have a diversity of experiences in the field of academics, sport, culture and everything else. We
would like to welcome our new learners and their families to our school. In a spirit of partnership and respect, we share the responsibility and privi-
lege of passing on the rich history of our faith and providing a quality education for your children at CBC.
I am very pleased and excited to be entering my second year as College Principal at CBC Mount Edmund. I will certainly do my best to continue the
outstanding work that we have been able to accomplish together last year. Our team here at CBC will continue to work together to bring it to
greater heights. We are committed to providing a positive, safe and caring environment, where all are welcome and respected. We too have experi-
enced a busy start to our year but we can assure you that we are all prepared to work together to ensure that all of our learners are successful,
challenged and encouraged to develop their unique and special God given talents.
Our theme for this year is “There is Good News”. We invite you to share in our mission to spread the Good News. The early followers of Christ’s
teachings were known simply as People of The Way. It was through their actions, love and service to one another, that they were recognised and
ultimately changed the world. Without a life well-lived, our message rings hollow. I look forward to our journey of discovery as God reveals His call
on our lives at CBC to bring the Good News message to a people living in darkness without hope.
Congratulations to the matric class of 2017 on their excellent results as they achieved a 100% pass rate and a 91.4% university exemption rate.
There were 90 subject distinctions with 67% of our learners achieving at least one distinction. Our standout performers with 6 distinctions were
Jordan Oliver, Gabi Pereira and Shaylan Moodley. Devan Goodrum, Kim Damons and Tshili Ravhuhali each received 5 distinctions. Overall, the class
of 2017 did us really proud and credit must go to all concerned with their education and we wish them all the best as they tackle life after school.
I want to stress that school safety is at the forefront of my thoughts and your child’s
safety is a top priority and we will work diligently to maintain a safe school environment.
You may have noticed that we are “tightening up” a few things at CBC Mount Edmund.
We are not changing many things, but rather enforcing more rules and practices that are
in place. We try our best to be open and inviting as possible while also maintaining a
level of security that keeps our learners safe and secure. Securing safety for all learners
sometimes necessitates making a decision that causes an inconvenience for some families
but we appreciate your understanding, support and patience as we try to maintain an
environment that is safe and supportive. Finally, let’s encourage our children to follow
3 basic rules: be respectful, be responsible and be an active learner.
Sincerely, Bernard Langton
College Principal
