Response options
The means by which students can structure and complete their answers.
The main response options are word processors and spreadsheets
SBL has a “Slides” response option that can be used to prepare a presentation

Word processor may be labelled differently:
• ‘Briefing notes’ in AAA
• ‘Discussion’ in SBR
• The name of the organization or issue the requirement relates to

Spreadsheet – calculation and numerical
analysis to support answers and reference
them in the word processor. Clear

Part 3 CBE exam techniques
• Before the exam
• First steps
• Planning your answer
• Completing your answer
© ACCA Internal
Before the exam
• Students should be familiar with the instructions before entering the exam room
➢ Number of sections & questions
➢ Overview of workspace / software
➢ Navigation
• 10 minutes to recap
• Use time to compose yourself, do not have to use full 10 minutes
• Plan approach in advance, playing their strength
• When click ‘Yes’, time starts counting down from four hours (Practice will not be timed)
© ACCA Internal
Before the exam – plan approach in advance
The exam summary screen – a good place to discuss exam strategy, e.g. mark allocations.
For AFM, recommend students spend 90 minutes each on
Section A and B. 90 minutes on Questions 1 and 45 minutes on
each of Question 2 and 3. This is 1.8 minutes per mark.
Students should not spend too long on each point.
This would leave them 15 minutes to skim the requirements at
the start and have time as a buffer at the end.
© ACCA Internal
First steps
• Skim through the questions to get a feel for the whole exam (2-3 mins)
• Remind students of the mark allocation, then move on
• Review background information
➢ May be told about overall role
➢ May be allocated different roles in each task
• Read Exhibit 1
➢ Always overview of exam scenario
➢ Highlight key points

First steps – select Scratch Pad for mark allocation
Q1 = XX mins
Q2 = XX mins
Q3 = XX mins
…

First steps – review background information
It also gives a briefing description of what is
contained in the exhibits students need to
answer the questions

Planning your answer
© ACCA Internal
Planning your answer – 40 – 60 mins for reading and answer planning
In SBL, thorough planning is vital
Students should aim to spend 40 to
60 minutes on this stage.
© ACCA Internal
Planning your answer – analyse tasks
They should start by copying the tasks into
the word processor to begin their analysis
and lay out the structure of their answer
© ACCA Internal
Planning your answer – analyse tasks
When students copy the requirements across, they should watch
out for formatting and reformat if they need to.
By doing this, they’re starting to set out their answer structure.
© ACCA Internal
Planning your answer – analyse tasks
• Use sub-headings to make their answer easier to read and mark
• Analyse each requirement in detail
• Identify the specific actions the examiner expects them to carry out
© ACCA Internal
Planning your answer – analyse tasks
Start by adding emphasis to key words by marking them bold:
• The verbs
• The format required
• The audience they’re communicating to
• Any calculation requirements
• Professional skills/marks
• Model used
© ACCA Internal
Planning your answer – review each exhibit in turn
• Colour code tasks to exhibits
• Record which task each is related to.
© ACCA Internal
Planning your answer – review each exhibit in turn
As students work through the requirements and
exhibits, this technique will help them build a plan
© ACCA Internal
• Attempt tasks in order
• Use appropriate response area
➢ Word processor for narrative, spreadsheet for calculations, slides when requested
• Ensure appropriate tone, based on audience
• Address professional skills
• Add additional points back into previous tasks if relevant
• Simple formatting
➢ Use bold for headings – no underlining or italics
➢ Use wording from tasks in headings
➢ Leave space between points
Completing your answer
© ACCA Internal
Planning your answer – use appropriate response area
• Use the spreadsheet functionality for all calculations.
• Lay out in a logical way and are labelled.
• Add heading and text rather than just figures.
© ACCA Internal
Planning your answer – use appropriate response area
Keep everything concise and ensure narrative
responses are entered into the word processor
with the calculation referenced.
© ACCA Internal
Planning your answer – simple formatting
• Use sub-headings to reflect the individual core
requirements identified.
• Use paragraphs to space out written answers effectively.
• No time waste on spelling and gramma checks
© ACCA Internal
Planning your answer
• Manage workspace effectively – shouldn’t have too many
windows open at once – they’ll clutter the screen.
• Use any time left over to read through the answers – check
they’re clear and well organized and make necessary changes.
