C O U N C I L

OUR V I S I ONBuilding the capacity of the South Tucson Youth Leadership

Counci l (STYLC ) , an al l -volunteer , youth - led coal it ion whose

vis ion i s to engage South Tucson youth ages 9 -24 as leaders in

their community . The youth wil l explore , preserve and

reinterpret the unique history and culture of South Tucson

through education and hands -on engagement .

HOW WE S TART EDThe STYLC i s a newly -developed group that has been launched by adult volunteers

with input and support f rom entit ies serving South Tucson , including schools , arts

organizat ions , South Tucson Pol ice Department , Tucson Urban League , public

l ibrar ies , the Univers ity of Arizona , and many others . This group of adult volunteers

has created an in it ia l structure and wil l continue to provide support and guidance

to the Counci l , but the activ it ies and specif ic areas of focus wil l be determined by

the youth . The intent of the Counci l i s to provide a platform for developing

leadership ski l ls , connecting with and shaping their community for the young

people in South Tucson .

Service - learning can improve character values and responsible behavior . Students

can general ize what they learn f rom their experiences with service - learning . They

learn how to be respectful toward others and toward public property , and they

develop awareness of healthy l i fe choices . Final ly , they learn about cultural divers ity

and show more tolerance of ethical divers ity .1

Service - learning can improve academic outcomes for students . Students

part ic ipating in high -qual ity service - learning experiences that are meaningful

( including interact ion with the community , valued service activ it ies , and relevance

to students ) , provide t ime for ref lect ion , and last for an extended period of t ime

have been shown to make academic gains , including gains on standardized tests . In

addit ion , students have shown increased attachment to school , engagement , and

motivat ion .
