Summer Projects
Student Name: Joshua Berndt
Read Something
For the homework project Read Something, I read a variety of different books. I mostly read the fictional reality genre such as Judy Moody , A to Z Mysteries , (More in the mysteries genre.) , Ramona the Pest , and Dairy of a Wimpy Kid. I didn’t only read those books though. I also read other books like The Hunger Games and other informational books like Iwitness.
During the summer I went to camp for three weeks at the Boys and Girls Club. They have a library there and I read there for about 2-‐3 hours each day. I even worked as librarian for another hour. As you can see, I read a whole lot this summer.
Multi-‐Course Breakfast
For the multi-‐course breakfast, I had seven people to serve. I woke up at around seven A.M. I started to make breakfast. I first had to heat up the water for the oatmeal. After, I made my own style of making eggs. I would put eggs in a bowl and put it in the microwave for a precise amount of time. It would depend on how many eggs you have. The eggs were the appetizer. Everyone loved the eggs. Next came the oatmeal. I put about three tablespoons of oats in each bowl. Then, I put a little bit of hot water in each bowl to make it oatmeal. So far they loved it. For the desert, I used my own invention. I made it up myself. I call it the Crispy Sticks. They are basically baked noodles at the perfect temperature. Since it was desert, I also added a little sugar to it. That is what I made for the multi-‐course breakfast.
Help Someone
For this project, I actually helped two people. The first was I went to Dollar Tree with my mom to get some school supplies. At the cash register one of the ladies asked if we would like to donate supplies to the military. I said ok and used my own money to give the military some supplies. I felt good to help the military.
The second person I helped was a veteran. My Taiwanese family and my mom, dad , and I decided to go to the Fisherman’s Warf to see the Monterey Bay. While we were going to the entrance I saw a man holding a sign that said “Help a fallen solider.” I felt bad for him so I took one of my dollars and gave it to him. Those are the two people I helped.
Build and Construct Something
I actually worked on this project for about three days. The first day I made a prototype. It was a battery taped to paper clips and a light bulb. My main Idea was to build a flashlight. The second day I tried using a water bottle and cans. It was the same thing just on a bigger scale. I used a glue gun, and I burned myself five times. It hurt, but I’m okay. The third day I tried the water bottle again, but it didn’t work because the wire would keep floating up into the middle of the glue from the glue gun.
Then, later that day my mom brought me some things and asked if any would be useful. One of the things she brought was foam paper. I said the foam paper could help so I used it. At the end I had two big nine volt batteries attached to paper foam and a light bulb you push down to light up.
Explore Something
For the Explore Something project, I decided to do it on a beach. My family and I can’t remember what the name of the beach is called. But, I know it is close to the outlet mall in P.G. At first, I was climbing on some rocks looking in some small puddles, and I saw sea snails, some hermit crabs, and little crabs. I even saw little anemones. They were about the size of the nail on your pinky.
Later, I was in this one area, and I saw a squirrel, and then another and another. They were running around like nuts. Then, I saw a whole bunch of sun flower seeds. At that moment, I knew why they were there. After about ten minutes I saw seven squirrels. One was on a rock as if it was the king. Another tried to pounce on me, but I moved away just in time. Then I had to go. As you can see it was extremely fun exploring that beach.
