Sunday of The Passion
Palm Sunday
2
WELCOME TO CALVARY “The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God!”
Thank you for worshipping with us today. You are always welcome at Calvary!
Sunday Of The Passion - Palm Sunday- April 9, 2017 God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.
Today’s liturgy begins with a palm procession, commemorating Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Quickly the tone of the service changes as we meditate upon Jesus’ passion and death. Because this story is so
central to our faith, we hear Matthew’s account of the passion today and John’s version on Good Friday. Though Jesus is obedient even unto death on the cross, he is exalted by God. We gather to remember
his offering for the life of the world, and to be fed by his life-giving mercy. This holy week will culminate in the celebration of the Three Days of Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection.
Commemorations for this week…
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, theologian, died 1945 Sunday, April 9, 2017 Bonhoeffer was a German theologian who wrote profoundly, yet in an accessible manner. In the Second World War, he became a leader of the Confessing Church in Germany that resisted the Nazi movement. Linked to a plot to kill Hitler, he was hanged shortly before the end of the war. Mikael Agricola, Bishop of Turku, died 1557 Monday, April 10, 2017 Consecrated bishop of Turku, Finland, without the approval of the pope, Agricola began a reform along Lutheran lines. In only three years, he translated the New Testament and worship texts into Finnish, in the process establishing the rules of Finnish writing that are still used today.

*Gathering … Pastor and Congregation Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna to the Son of David.
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray… Mercifully assist us, O Lord God of our salvation, that we may enter with joy upon the contemplation of those mighty acts whereby you have given us life everlasting;
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen *Processional Gospel … Year A (Matthew 21:1-11)… Pastor 1 When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, just say this, "The Lord needs them.' And he will send them immediately. " 4 This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, 5 "Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey." 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; 7 they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!" 10 When he entered Jeru-salem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, "Who is this?" 11 The crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee." *Thanksgiving …The members of the congregation raise their branches...Pastor with Congregational Responses
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. We praise and thank you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you have redeemed us
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph, and was acclaimed Son of David and King of kings by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path. We ask that you bless these branches and those who bear them, and grant that we
may ever hail him as our Lord and King and follow him with perfect confidence; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

*Confession and Forgiveness… Pastor and Congregation
In the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. God of heaven and earth, you come in close and make us yours. Equip us by your Spirit to confess our sin, embrace your forgiveness, and seek the way you set before us in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. With honesty of heart, let us confess our sin. Merciful God, forgive us. Our will is handcuffed to sin, and we cannot break free. We have spoken when we should have kept quiet. Silence. We were silent when we should have said something. Silence. We acted when we knew better. Silence. We were still when we know we should have moved. Silence. For the wrong we have done, for the good we have failed to do, have mercy on us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Amen.
People of God, look to the ☩ Son, given to heal you and set you free because God loved the world so much. Take hold of life—eternal life! Amen.

The Passion of Our Lord According to St. Matthew
Song: “Draw Me Close” Draw me close to You, Never let me go. I lay it all down again. To hear You say that You’re my friend. You are my desire, Nothing else will do. Cause nothing else could take Your place, To feel the warmth of Your embrace. Help me find the way, Bring me back to You. You’re all I want, You’re all I ever needed. You’re all I want, Help me know You are near.
1. All glory, laud, and honor To Thee, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring. Thou art the King of Israel,
Thou David's royal Son, Who in the Lord's name comest,
The King and Blessed One.
2. All glory, laud, and honor To Thee, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring.
The company of angels Are praising Thee on high,
And mortal men and all things Created make reply.
3. All glory, laud, and honor To Thee, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring. The people of the Hebrews
With psalms before Thee went; Our praise and prayer
and anthems Before Thee we present.
4. All glory, laud, and honor To Thee, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring.
To Thee, before Thy Passion, They sang their hymns
of praise; To Thee, now high exalted,
Our melody we raise.
5. All glory, laud, and honor To Thee, Redeemer , King.
To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosanna ring.
Thou didst accept their praises; Accept the prayers we bring, Who in all good delightest,
Thou good and gracious King.

Peter’s Denial - Judas’s Death… Jesus Before Pilate Song: Above All … LaBlanc and Baloche Above all powers, above all kings, Above all nature And all created things; Above all wisdom and all the ways of man, You were here before the world began. Above all kingdoms, above all thrones, Above all wonders The world has ever known; Above all wealth and treasures of the earth, There’s no way to measure what You’re worth. Chorus: Crucified, laid behind the stone; You live to die, rejected and alone; Like a rose, trampled on the ground, You took the fall, And thought of me, above all.
Crucified, laid behind the stone; You live to die, rejected and alone; Like a rose, trampled on the ground, You took the fall, And thought of me, above all.
Like a rose, trampled on the ground, You took the fall And thought of me, Above all.
I’m forgiven, Because You were forsaken. I’m accepted, You were condemned. I’m alive and well, Your Spirit is within me. Because You died and rose again.
Amazing love, how can it be- That You, my King, would die for me? Amazing love, I know it’s true- And it’s my joy to honor You. In all I do I honor You.
I’m forgiven, Because You were forsaken. I’m accepted, You were condemned. I’m alive and well, Your Spirit is within me. Because You died and rose again.

Golgotha Song: Lamb Of God… Twila Paris
Jesus’ Death...Burial Song: Were You There … African American Spiritual
*The Apostles’ Creed… In Unison I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlast-ing. Amen. *Prayers … Pastor *Sharing Of The Peace … Pastor with Congregational Response The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Verse 1: Your only Son, no sin to hide, But you have sent Him from Your side To walk upon this guilty sod And to become the Lamb of God.
(Refrain): O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, I love the holy Lamb of God. Oh, wash me in your precious blood, My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.
Verse 2: Your gift of love we crucified. We laughed and scorned Him as He died. The humble king we named a fraud And sacrificed the Lamb of God. (Refrain)
Verse 3: I was so lost, I should have died, But You have brought me to Your side To be led by Your staff and rod And to be called a lamb of God. (Refrain)
1. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
2. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
3. Were you there when they pierced him in the side? Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
4. Were you there when the sun refused to shine? Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
5. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
