What is survey
• Procedure in quantitative research in which investigators administer a survey to a sample or entire population of people to describe the attitudes, opinions, behaviors or the characteristic of the population.
When do you use Survey?
• To describe trend (eg. Gwiyomi)
• To determine individual opinions about policy or issue
• Evaluate program (satisfaction victory)
• Etc
Key Characteristic of Survey Research
• Sampling from population
• Collecting data through questionnaires or interviews
• Designing instrument for data collection
• Obtaining a high response rate
Sampling from population
• The population (the group of individuals having one characteristic that distinguish them from other groups)
• Target population (actual list of sampling units from which the sample is selected)
• The Sample (is the group of participants in the study selected from the target population)
Types of Survey
Questionnaire
Interview
Types of Survey Design
• Cross-Sectional Survey Designs
• Longitudinal Survey Designs
Cross-Sectional Survey Designs
• To collect data about current attitudes, opinions, or beliefs at one point in time.
Longitudinal Survey Designs
• To collect data over time
• Trend Studies (Same Population Different sample and Different Research)
• Cohort Study (Same Population Different Sample for one Research)
• Panel Studies (the researcher examines the same Sample for Research).
• Trend Studies
• Cohort Studies
• Panel Studies
Data Gathering
Mode of Data Collection
Interviews Questionnaire
• Self Completion • Group Administered • House-hold Drop Off
• Face-to-face • Individual • Group • Electronic • Web • Tel
Mode of Data Collection
• Mailed questionnaires
• Web-based questionnaires
• One-on-one interviews
• Focus-Group Interviews
• Telephone interviews
What are the steps in conducting survey design
• Decide if a survey is the best design to use
• Identify the research question or hypotheses
• Identify the population, sampling frame & the sample
• Determine the survey design and data collection procedures
• Develop and locate an instrument
• Administer the instrument
• Analyze the data to address the research questions or hypotheses
• Write the report
• Definition of the research problem • Operational definition of variables • Review of the literature • Development of Survey Design
• Definition of the population • Identification of Subpopulations • Detailed sampling procedures • Selecting the sample
• Development of item, or selecting instruments • Development of anticipated analysis procedures • Pilot run (try-out of items) • Revision of items
• Training for interviewers, observers, testers
• Conduct interviews, administer questionnaires, inventories, test, or observation • schedules
• Follow-ups
• Initial Tabulation and coding
• Construction of category (coding) • Technical Preparation for analysis
• Separate analyses of individual items or groups of item • Synthesis, results interpreted
