SurveyingCompetitionOverviewSurveyinghasbeenacornerstoneofcivilengineeringprojectplanningandexecutionforcenturies.Oneofthemostimportanttasksforsurveyorsisfindingthelocationofknownpoints.Teamswillbeexpectedtolocateahiddenpointusinggivencoordinatesandtypicalsurveyingequipment.EligibilityTeamsmayconsistofuptofive(5)studentchaptermembers,includingamaximumofone(1)graduatestudent.GeneralRules

• Teamswillbegiventhecoordinatesforthree(3)pointsontheAlabamaStatePlaneCoordinateSystem(NorthingsandEastings)

o Two(2)ofthegivenpointswillbemarkedplainlyinthecompetitionareawithcaps,stakes,and/ortape.

o Oneofthepointswillbeaburied“propertycorner”(paintednail)thathasnotbeenlocated.Onlyitscoordinatesareknown.

• Thecompletionwillbetimed.Timewillstartbeforeanyequipmenthasbeenassembledorplaced.Nowritingmaybedonebeforetimebegins.Timewillstopwhentheteamturnsintheircalculationsandthepaintednailtheylocatedtothejudges.Teamswillbegivenamaximumof30minutestolocatetheburiedpointandturninthetape.Judgeswillkeeptheofficialtime.

• Abasicsurveyor’sfieldbookwillbeprovidedforeachteamtouse.Nootherpapermaybeusedforcalculations.

• Asidefromtheprovidedfieldbook,teamsmustprovidetheirownmaterials.DisqualificationDisqualificationwillresultfrom:

• Failuretocompletethetaskwithinthe30-minutetimelimit;• Failuretolocatethecorrectburiedpoint(otherswillbeburiedinthe

competitionarea);• Usingmaterialsnotincludedonthelistbelow;

MaterialsTeamswillusebasicsurveyingequipmentandtechniquestolocatetheburiedpointusingthetwomarkedpointsforreference.Thefollowingequipmentisallowed:

• One(1)standardtripod• Maximumofthree(3)plumbbobs• One(1)theodolite,transit,ortotalstation(seeadditionalrulesbelow)• Two(2)Philadelphiarodsorrangepoles(oroneofeach)• Two(2)standardsurveyor’smeasuringtapes• Magneticcompass• Stopwatch(awristwatchisacceptable,butcellphonesarenot)• Pencils• Arulerorstraightedge• AnFE-approvedcalculator(seehttp://ncees.org/exams/calculator-policy/)• Smallgardenshovelortrowel(usedonlytoremovenail)

Ateamusinganelectronictotalstationmaynotuseadatacollector(on-boardorseparate)orelectronicdistancemeasurementfunctions.Thetotalstationmayonlybeusedtomeasureangles.Judging

• Theteamswillberankedaccordingtotheircompletiontimesforthecompetition.Timeswillberoundedtothenearestsecond.Teampointswillbeawardedlinearlydownfrom50pointsbasedoneachteam’splacement.

• Intheeventofatie,submittedcalculationswillbejudgedaccordingtothefollowingcriteria:

o Neatnessofwritingandsketcheso Thoroughnessandcorrectnessofcalculationso Adherencetostandardfieldnote-takingpractices
