  • 1. Deconstruction in Cuse Factors of Influence and Stakeholders Adam Maurer EST 612 22 April 2010
  • 2. 4 Ws
    • What?
    • Why?
    • Where?
    • When?
  • 3. Expanding on WHY The 3 Es
    • Equity- assists low-income
    • Economy- develop inherently local, resilient economies
    • Ecology- less material extraction, fewer materials to landfills/less incineration, fewer chemicals because asbestos, lead, and appliances are carefully disposed of
  • 4. Some numbers on WHY
    • In United States= 260 Mt of non-industrial waste/yr
    • >>>> 136 Mt of 260 Mt (33%) is from C&D
    • Construction uses 40% of all extracted materials
    • 30% of all energy
    • OR
12,100 lbs. (22,000 board feet) of lumber Deconstruction of 319 Marcellus Street preserved 86% of the homes 213,000 pounds of resources while employing 20 people for four days.

    • Local Waste Management
  • 8. Housing Stock
    • Approx. 2,100 abandoned, deteriorating homes
    • City has old, historic housing stock with unique architectural elements
    • The City of Syracuse plans on spending $1.2 Million to demolish about 67 homes
  • 9. Labor Market
    • Since the market crash, unemployment rates have increased dramatically
    • These people can be trained for deconstruction
    • Hope for Us Housing Corp.- organization dedicated to finding work for the unemployable
    • Studies indicate that deconstruction can create up to 19 jobs for every 1 for demolition
  • 10. Public Sector Mayor Minor Steps
    • More than $1 Million in Additional Housing Rehab and Building Funds (Positive?)
    • Streamlined Permit Process (Negative?)
    • The Creation of the Bureau of Planning & Sustainability (Positive?)
    • Creation of the Department of Neighborhood and Business Development (Positive?)
    • SUNY ESF
    • However, overall, local govt has lacked leadership
  • 11. Private Sector
    • Syracuse CoE
    • Syracuse University
    • Northeast Green Building Consulting
    • Hope For Us Housing
    • Ram Industrial Design
    • Habitat for Humanity
    • Unable to connect the dots as of now
  • 12. Local Waste Management Agreement between OCRRA and Covanta
    • agreement is based on an assumed delivery of 310,000 tons of waste/yr
    • If less, OCRRA must pay for loss of electric revenue
    • If more, OCRRA must pay waste processing fee
EFFECT ON DECONSTRUCTION Discourages OCRRA from making drastic changes in policy which effect waste stream. Want to keep the waste stream predictable and fairly constant
  • 13. Other Cities
    • Portland- Van Jones Green For All
      • Green Collar City Program
      • Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS)
    • Berkeley- Banned virgin red wood
    • Cotati- all reusable and recycling materials must be made available for salvage
    • San Jose- Advanced Recycling Fee
  • 14. TAKE AWAY
    • Collaboration
    • Cooperation
    • Partnerships
    • Community groups must band together and gain a voice in decision-making.
    • This must be a community effort!!!
