News For Our Parishes
A Message From Fr. Tony Parish News Today, the 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, was declared as the Sunday of the Word of God by Pope Francis on September 30, 2019. In his letter “Aperuit Illis”, Instituting the Sunday of the Word of God, Pope Francis states, “A day devoted to the Bible should not be seen as a yearly event but rather a year-long event, for we urgently need to grow in our knowledge and love of the Scriptures and of the risen Lord, who continues to speak his word and to break bread in the community of believers.” (*for the full document check out the link on our Facebook page or Parish website). God Bless, Fr. Tony

M B C We are very happy to announce that we are bringing back the “Monthly Birthday Celebrations” after our 8:30 a.m. Mass. These “Monthly Birthday Celebrations” will be held on the last Friday of each month and will resume Friday, January 31st and will be held at the St. John the Evangelist Parish Center. More Good News: Fr. Tony is permitting us to bring the “Monthly Birthday Celebrations” to St. Mary Nativity Parish when we switch the location of the 8:30 a.m. Mass to St. Mary’s in April. We will use a room in the St. Mary Parish Center to host the parties. A big THANK YOU to Kim Henckel for her work in bringing back this special gathering.
E Y C S The Parish Office will be mailing out 2019 donor contribution statements to parishioners for income tax purposes. The statements will be mailed in February.
The 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, as Fr. Tony mentioned in his bulletin article, was declared as the Sunday of the Word of God by Pope Francis. So let’s take a moment to look a little deeper into the scriptures today. Our hymns today center around the theme of being called by Jesus as we heard in the Gospel from Matthew. Jesus called these men by name, asking them to “come after me.” Our Opening hymn, Two Fishermen, retells this story, but in the last verse the text turns to us now. “Listen as he calls your name to come and follow near, for he still speaks in varied ways to those his call will hear.” We hear again in our Presentation hymn, The Summons, Jesus asking if we will come, follow, and do what he calls us to in our lives. So, what can we take from this celebration of the Sunday of the Word of God and the readings today? We can ask ourselves; will we be open today and in the future to Jesus’ call to follow him (do his will) as did the four fishermen? They were presented with a new opportunity and they accepted immediately without hesitation. We too are presented with new opportunities, if only we take the time to notice. Let’s take a moment each day to read/study scripture and see how it will inspire each of us and help us to hear Jesus words spoken to us daily. - Michelle

S . T A Feast Day: January 28
St. Thomas Aquinas was an Italian Dominican theologian, the foremost medieval Scholastic. He was also a poet and wrote some of the most beautiful Eucharistic hymns in the church’s liturgy. Although many modern Roman Catholic theologians do not find St. Thomas altogether congenial, he is nevertheless recognized by the Roman Catholic Church as its foremost Western philosopher and theologian.
A Prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas…
Grant me, O Lord my God, a mind to know you, a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you, conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in waiting for you, and a hope of finally embracing you. Amen.
