Dear teacher,
We want to tell you about the brilliant Takeoff Festival. We’re england’s leading festival of theatre for children and young people and it’s right here in county durham.
Takeoff Festival bounces into its 29th year with more bold, magical and innovative national and international theatre for the North east’s young audiences.
We programme plays suitable for eyFS all the way through to Key Stage 4, as we believe children and young people are the most important audience of all.
We would love your school to join us on a theatrical adventure to inspire those young imaginations. Flick through this brochure, decide which show you think your students will enjoy and then get in touch!
We’ll look forward to hearing from you.

16 singers16 Singers cleverly captures the attention oftiny spectators using breath, rhythm and song, and by blending movement patterns and dance with an intricate, moving set.
director Katherine Morley has brought together a team of artists passionate about creating work for children. Paul rissman, described by The Herald newspaper in Scotland as “the Pied Piper of classical music”, has written an uplifting score sung by the performers as they move amongst the babies.
choreographer rosie Heafford, best known for her hit Dad Dancing, adds gentle patterns of movement in and around the delicately woven sculpture created by Sophia clist, of Theatre rites fame.
With its very young audience at its heart, 16 Singers is a rare opportunity to share a beautifully crafted performance with your baby.

Ourteacher'sa trOllan outrageously entertaining, deliciously dark and terribly funny tale from Dennis kelly, the writer of award-winning west end hit Matilda the Musical.
Two terrible twins with a talent for turmoil rule their school with terror and tyranny. That is, until the arrival of a new head teacher with green scaly skin, sharp gnarly fangs, and a long spiky tail…
can the twins save the school from the child-eating Troll? can they get brussels sprouts in peanut butter taken off the lunch menu? And most importantly, can naughtiness prevail?

POcketmerchantshakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice…pocket-size.
Propeller’s all-male cast brings Shakespeare’s text to life with its invigorating, engaging and sometimes funny approach to the play. Pocket Merchant is an inspiring introduction not only to Shakespeare, but also to the very best of english theatre.
The Merchant of Venice is an uncompromising tale of greed and revenge. When bassanio falls in love with the wealthy Portia, he becomes imprisoned in a bargain with a ruthless moneylender. A pound of flesh is sought in payment, and time is fast running out to untangle the trap of his own making.

welcOme tO OctOvilleOctoville is festooned with unusual characters, surreal structures and eccentric machinery.
Have a conversation with the deeply unpopular puppet Mayor Harold Gobsworth. consider why Granny Fitch lives in a tree and won't come down, and try to figure out why there are Pterodactyls everywhere!
octoville is partly constructed of discarded objects which creator Marc has given life to. Marc will be in the exhibition to attempt to keep the surreal octoville residents in order, so your class will have chance to chat to the maker himself.
Welcome to Octoville is a living art installation. book your classes place to see the installation alongside your visit to the theatre.
