and while it has been a tricky challengeworking with someone I have never met orreally spoke to, I am so incredibly happyand grateful for the hard work that shehas done. So a big shout out to our newdesigner Mariana, I know you will love theook! Many of you are asking for a printed

To Studio light
www.allthingsbaby.biz
I have been a studio light photographer since the ve
beginning. It honestly never occurred to me to do a
thing different. The only photographs I had ever htaken of me were with studio lights, and I gu
I thought there was no other way to be a p
fessional photographer. Of course I have lo
since learned better, and most of my very
vorite photographers use natural light- bthat is the crowd I run with, and if I were
other forums, most people would use stud
lights there.
I truthfully don
think one is bettethan the other- I f
both beautiful, however I want to make
case for shooting with studio lights (becauthat is what I do! :0).
What I like about studio lighting-
I am not dependent on the light- in wintecan still shoot all day long, never having
worry about what it looks like outside.
Studio lights are amazingly sharp.
I dont have to worry a lot about my ISO aShutter speed- the lights will freeze the mot
and usually come up with a sharp image n
matter what the child is doing.
I always know what my images are goinglook like- so processing is fairly straight f
ward.

r not to Studio light...Tips for working with studio lights...
Read a book. There are lots of greatbooks on studio lighting out there.
Look on the internet- when I frst started
the internet was invaluable in teaching
me how to use my lights.Attend a workshop- there are lots of
people out there who can teach you
how to use your lights.
Get a good light meter. I no longer usea light meter- but I used one religiously
for about 4 years. I couldnt guess what
my lights were going to do- so I had the
light meter tell me. It is worth the invest-
ment.
Dont over light
your subject! This
is the most com-
mon thing I seedone wrong with
any kind of light-
ing- shadows are
our friends. It is
the play of lightand shadow that
makes an image
beautiful. It givesthe human form
defnition and
shape.
Have fun with it!
I think the reason
My white balance is always the same.
can control where the light falls andhow many shadows I want in the im-
age.
can shoot in my basement, and not
have to worry about windows.
Not every one has studio lights- it sets
me apart form my competition.
These are just a few of the reasons why I
prefer studio lights over natural light. Ofcourse I shoot outside all summer long,
but I still get a large number of requests
or studio images even when it is nice
outside. My clients just like the way it
ooks, and so do I.

that most natural light photographers
dont like studio lights is because they
have only ever seen old school studiophotographers. You can do all those
fun natural light type images with stu-
dio lights. Make it fun- make it modern.
The studio lighting world is in bad need
of a revolution- you should start thechange! :0)

The branding for your business shouldstand out, while at the same time besimple enough to communicate easily. There is really no need to include anyand all ways to contact you on your

All your contact information should be

Ican still remember the very rst

It was raining outside. I walked in andinstantly realized I was the one who had
to nd the light and real fast! These days the term natural lightphotographer has managed toget somewhat of a bad wrap. Many equate it to newphotographers who havelittle money to throw into astandard studio lighting/backdrop setup. I hearmore and more grumblesfrom the industry at large ifa photographer even men-tions for a second that...gasp...theyare using a more minimal equipmentapproach. The typical eye roll and Ibet they are only charging $75 for asession and a disk of all images too isthe standard response. So I have to ask... why? While there isa huge inux of folks setting up shop
and opting to call themselves naturallight, I tend to see it more like a decadeago when the photojournalist style ofwedding photography began to reallyenter the scene. I can still hear all ofthe old guys ranting and raving abouthow bad the photography was. By thenext month those grumbling about thePJ style began to advertise it on theirwebsites as well. It was what the clientwanted. Simple supply and demand. Now PJ wedding photography is a verystandard style.
If you think beinga good locationphotographer

Wordpress is that it
divides the content from
he appearance. The
content of the site - posts,
comments, menus, etc. -
s kept in a database le. The
appearance of the site is kept onhe server in the wp-content folder.
This means that when you change
he appearance of the site by using a
different theme, the content will be
rearranged to match the new theme -
but the actual content will not change.
This makes it possible to experimentwith different layouts and graphics
without losing any of the meat of
he site.
Another important distinction to be
made is between wordpress.com and
wordpress.org. A wordpress.com sites very easy to set up and you dont
need a domain or hosting - but there
are some limitations. Because the
wordpress installation is hosted on
heir server, you wont have complete
control over the appearance and how
t can be used. This is ne if you aredoing a simple family blog, or if you
dont need the search engines to nd
you. But if you are running a business
or want to use the full capabilities of
wordpress, its best to use wordpress.
org. A wordpress.org
installation runs off of
your server - so you
must have a domain
and hosting in order to
install wordpress. There are
several benets to this. First, youwill have complete control of the
appearance and contents of your site
- you can install any theme and any
plug-ins you like, and adjust them as
you wish. Additionally, you can run
some of the more complex functions
of wordpress such as forums, stores, etc. Finally, hosting it on your
business domain means that you
will get search engine benets and
customers will be more easily able to
nd you.
Now that the basics are out of theway, lets take a look at some of the
ways wordpress can be used.
As a store: Many stores
are run using e-commerce and
other plug-ins. My own site -
lovebugsphotographydesigns.com -has a store attached where customers
can order services. The store can
be congured to offer immediate
digital downloads of products, and of
course you can see physical products

an example of a site using the same

As a Forum: Forum plug-insmake it possible to run a full-featured

Forums can be set up with
sub-forums and access can be

As a Portfolio: Its possible tocombine a blog and a portfolio site

but its also entirely possible to have

We know what youre thinking. Okay,so Kotori has a nice line and reliableservice, why do I what to sell jewelry?Well, if the extra revenue isnt enough,Photo Jewelry is a great marketing tool.Unlike other photo products, like framedprints for example, jewelry travels withyour client into the outside world where
friends and even strangers can see itand ask where it came from. The answerto that question will be your studio itsa great awareness and referral builder.
With these kinds of products, Kotorihas positioned itself to become thechoice for photographers. With a solidstrategy and a focus on the professionalphotographer, expect to be seeing aot more from them.

Managing Cash flow in a Crazy Econom

You have billed $650 total for this joand your bills and COGS equate to $4
(Prot of $200) but you have negatcash ow. How does this happen? Yobills of $450 are due in June, yet you haonly collected $400, making your caow negative. If they pick up their ordin July and remit the balance of $2you made your prot correct? Not quIf they are your only order, you still habills of $350 (rent, utilities etc..) yet yo
income in the month of July is $250.
So how can you x the cyc
The best way is to have yoclients pay for their ordin its entirety at the timeordering. If this is not possibtry to collect as much
possible.
Ask your vendors for terms. This meathey will bill you or charge your accou5, 10, 15 or 30 days after your order, whusually gives you time to collect the balance from a client
Be quick to nalize orders and try to nottoo much time lapse between the sessand ordering appointment, and ayour ordering appointment to delivePhotographers who push off orderand delivery often have negative caow because their clients are not ato pick up orders and pay balances intimely manner.
Lets talk cash. It is super fun to havelots of it, and not fun at all to struggle!Photography is a rewarding business, butcan also be quite protable if you havebusiness savvy skills to take your businesso that next level.
Cash ow refers to the movement ofcash in and out of a business, and isoften used as an indicator of the strengthof the business. You can have positive
or negative cash ow depending oneveral things. When more money comesN than OUT, that is positivecash ow, while negativecash ow is the opposite.m sure you are thinking, Ipurchase an 8x10 for $2.50and sell it for $40, so that ispositive cash ow right? Notexactly. You have to look at when thecash is available to you.
Say for example, you book a session forJune 15th, and they prepay your sessionee of $150. It takes you approximately 2
weeks to edit and present their images,at which time they order $500 in productson June 30th. They pay you $250 andwill pay the balance upon pick upapproximately 4-6 weeks later. In themonth of June you have collected $400rom them. Your COGS is $100 which is
due at the time of ordering and yourother bills (props, utilities, internet, phoneetc) are $350. You feel great becauseyou are showing a prot from this job.
Ask your
vendors
for terms.
