Save Energy: Low Operating Costs – Approximate Energy Cost
AEC = (ACL * OH * Rate) / ESEER
ACL=Average Chiller Load (kW)
Use ESEER weighting: 0.03(100%)+0.33(75%)+0.41(50%)+0.23(25%) = 54% Average Load
For YLAA0515HE Chiller: 521x 0.54 = 281 kW
OH=Operating Hours: Assume 5,000 hours per year
Rate=Utility Energy Charge (€/kWh): Assume average €0.10/kWh
ESEER=European Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (kW/kW)
For YLAA0515HE: ESEER=4.33
AEC = (281 x 5,000 x 0.1) / 4.33 = 32,500 €

Save Energy: Evaporator Pressure Drop
Pumping power used to overcome pressure drop through the evaporator has a cost that needs to be taken into account
Pumping Power [kW] = ΔP x Q / 103 / ηPUMP / ηMOTOR
Pumping Cost = Pumping Power x Operating Hours x Rate
Where:
ΔP = Pressure Drop though Evaporator in kPa
Q = Flow Rate in L/s. ( Q = Cooling Capacity [kW] / 4.18 / 5)
ηPUMP = Efficiency of the pump. Considered 90%
ηMOTOR = Efficiency of the motor. Considered 80%

Save Energy: How do we achieve it? – Compressors & Evap.
Tandem or Trio Scroll Configuration
Same compressors as on YCWL
Proven configuration with High Efficiency
Replace ZP285 as used on YLAE by more efficient ZP295
Use of shell and tubes evaporator increases cooling capacity compared to PHE for same compressors configuration
Johnson Controls16
Save Energy: How do we achieve it? – Efficient Fans
YLAA is using more efficient fans than YLAE
Microchannel air side pressure drop is less than conventional condenser coils allowing higher air flow and lower fan power con-sumption than on YLAE
YLAE0510HE 8 fans
42 m3/s with fans at full speed
1.8 kW / fan
YLAA0515HE 8 fans
52 m3/s with fans at full speed (+24 % more air)

Heat Recovery – (Cont’d)
Not only provides free heat but also increases cooling EER
Heat Recovery Exchanger converts the YLAA into a water-cooled chiller, therefore increasing efficiency.
Standard YLAA0515HE:
35ºC ambient - LCWT 7ºC
EER = 3.05
Heat Recovery YLAA0515HE:
35ºC ambient - LCWT 7ºC – LHWT 45ºC
EER = 3.55

Microchannel Condenser Coils – Elements of design
Three basic components are used to construct microchannel coils:
1. Parallel Flow Aluminum Tubes
2. Enhanced Aluminum Fins
3. Header Manifolds
Combined by alternating tube and fin sections (layer of tube, layer of fin, layer of tube, etc).
Fins and tubes are captured at both ends by header manifolds.
Controlled Atmosphere Brazing (CAB) furnaces are used to manufacture all- aluminum microchannel coils (enriched with Nitrogen to minimize oxidation on the coil surface and promote clean, consistent braze joints).

Johnson Controls27
Microchannel Condenser Coils – Corrosion Resistance
Conventional copper tube/aluminum fin coils are predisposed to galvanic corrosion (2 dissimilar materials).
Microchannel coils reduce the rate of galvanic corrosion by utilizing tube and fin material with similar properties (aluminum) and provide more than seven times greater corrosion resistance
Microchannel - 7,000 HrsConventional Coil – 1,000 Hrs
Johnson Controls28
Microchannel Condenser Coils – Serviceability
Structure is more rigid than conventional condenser coil designs since Microchannel Aluminum fins do not protrude past the edge of the tube (as is common in Cu tube / Al fin designs)
Microchannel coils can be cleaned with medium-pressure water (10 MPa). It is also safe to use traditional cleaning methods with microchannel coils.
Coil repair is accomplished by using a hand-held, light-weight, off the shelf MAPP gas torch as opposed to the typical oxy-acetylene torch.
All other interconnecting joints are standard copper to copper connections and current brazing practices apply.
Johnson Controls29
Microchannel Condenser Coils – Additional Advantages
Leak potential of microchannel condenser coil is far less than tube/fin coil as there are no brazed return bends (only vertical header)
Significant Weight reduction on the overall Condenser Section. The coil dimensions are 1200 mm x 2050 mm and weighs approximately 30 kg per coil slab.
Air Side pressure is less than for equivalent conventional coil and therefore contributes to quieter sound level.
Technology benefits from the automotive industry experience. Car Radiators have endured a severe environment for 15 years or more.They are subjected to: Salt, Oil, Sand, Tar, Gravel, Chemical Road Treatments, Dirt, Insects, Moisture and Full Range of Ambient Temperatures. WHEN DID YOU LAST CHANGE YOUR CAR RADIATOR?
