The MakersIt is known as India’s “brass city.” But the metalworkers of Moradabad hardly limit themselves to one medium. In fact, thirty years ago, brass work was scarce — the cost of raw materials too high and the prices in the export market too low. And though their craft represented a centuries-old legacy, metal workers were abandoning the work in search of other employment. But Samuel Masih recognized that this piece of India’s cultural heritage — and this livelihood — were worth saving. So he founded Noah’s Ark.
Today, in workshops like Anwar Saleem’s, metal work is thriving because Noah’s Ark helps these highly skilled craftspeople create contemporary designs with innovative materials — from bicycle chains to wrought iron. As a fair trade organization, Noah’s Ark markets artisans’ crafts and secures fair prices and export opportunities. It also provides medical and dental clinics, operates neighborhood schools, and installs water filtration systems in artisans’ homes. An effort to preserve tradition is helping to change the futures of entire communities.

The MakerCan a necklace really help save a rainforest?
If it’s made of tagua nut, it can. Tagua nuts come from palm-like trees and fall to the ground when ripe, so the harvesting method is sustainable. The increasing value of tagua nuts for jewelry and ornaments has encouraged the preservation of rainforests. Collecting fallen tagua nuts provides income opportunities in developing countries in South America. They are truly jewels of the jungle.
Known as “vegetable ivory,” tagua is an excellent and ethical alternative to animal ivory because it takes dye well and is exceptionally easy to cut and shape.
And carving is what artisan Diana Pisco Loon enjoys most, shaping pieces of art for customers to wear. In her workshop in Quito, Ecuador, situated high on a hill overlooking the city, she creates unique jewelry, drawing inspiration from life around her, taking tagua from raw nut to final product under one roof. She is an artist; tagua is her canvas.

As the world’s original fair trader, we are committed to alleviating poverty around the world, continuing the work begun by our pioneering founder Edna Ruth Byler. In 1946 Byler visited Puerto Rico where she met women who struggled to find jobs and feed their families. She began selling the women’s embroidery work to friends and neighbors. The project that began in the trunk of her car is now known as Ten Thousand Villages and provides income to 20,000 craftspeople in 30 developing countries.
At Ten Thousand Villages, every product, every purchase, for 70 years, has been rooted in the principles of fair trade — fair prices, advance payments, long term relationships, design collaboration and environmental responsibility — giving people around the world a chance to make a better life.
