mortgageenquiry.co.ukMarch Issue Deadline 1st February

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the fi rst edition of 2012, I’d like to wish you a Happy New Year (albeit belated). I hope you had a great Christmas and the return to work wasn’t too much of a challenge. I never seem to realise how benefi cial the seasonal break is until I return to work with a renewed calm. Unfortuantely, this year the calm was short lived when I realised that one of my deadlines was earlier than the others! The Village Directory is now in its seventh year but deadlines still challenge my stress levels!

Over the years the magazine has proven itself as valuable resource in the areas it reaches, not just for promoting local business, but also for promoting local community items. Community fud raising events are advertised free of charge and free editorial space is also available to create awareness for local organisations, schools,

church communities and even for private individual fund raising challenges. The six Village Directory areas provide a total coverage of just over 37,000 rural homes and business, so you can reach out to your own local community via this magazine or reach out further with inclusion in any of the others. The choice is yours.

Remember, the magazine is delivered via Royal Mail so it’s the best way to reach the rural community. Please contact me if you think the magazine can help with your community or charity project.

If ever your magazine fails to arrive please let me know, I’ll send you a magazine right away and do my best to ensure you’re not missed again.

Thank you for your support,

~ Debbie

February

Is it too late to say Happy New Year to you all? No? Good! And did we all get what we wanted in our Christmas stockings? Well I must have been a really good girl, cos I got just about everything I really needed. Some really good gardening gloves (must go through at least six pairs a year!), and a very good quality stainless steel hand fork, (this I am very impressed with as the handle is soft moulded plastic and very comfy to use. Unlike the wooden type handle, which the end of the shaft seems to bruise the upper palm of my hand, this one has a grip instead). I also got the book I wanted on fruit and fruit trees, (The Amateur Gardener book on Fruit), mainly because I am still unsure and nervous on pruning my new fruit trees, so must study the methods used. I was also given a wicked tool for splitting plants. I’d never seen one like it before, it’s called a Japanese gardeners trowel. In Japan its called a hori hori meaning dig dig! It has a serrated edge to it, and I hasten to add that it is not sharp and just the right weight required. It can also be used for weeding and digging. Husband gave me a new stainless steel fork and spade with genuine willow shafts, very posh! I shall be frightened to use them! But, and don’t laugh, the best gardening pressy I was given was a string tin. Silly isn’t it. They’re not expensive to buy yet I never did get round to it and always keeping my string in an old plastic pot! I shall look forward to using them all, shame its raining today as I’m getting the gardening urge and could do with some gardening therapy after Christmas and all the indulgences that went with it. The saddest thing? Nobody bought me any compost (sigh).

the gardenTaking a turn around the plot the other day I was surprised to see just how many spring fl owers there were, not only emerging but actually fl owering. I have at the moment, not only snowfl ake, the larger version of snowdrop, but also hellebores, daff odils and even the roses have continued fl owering. The hyacinth and drumstick primula buds are coming through along with the crocus and will be in full bloom within the next week or so. I think that the good Lord is enjoying a game with us gardeners and not only confusing the plants with the un-seasonal warm weather but us as well! Mind you if they all bloom together what a kaleidoscope of colour the garden will be, but there shall also be a vacant spell following, until the later spring/early summer fl owers arrive.

The hot and cold beds seem to have survived their upheaval and new sprouts are appearing on the perennials in the beds. But the one thing I am looking forward to seeing are the new tulips bulbs that were planted. There were a few unusual ones, as were reported in the December issue, I don’t have a great deal of luck with tulips, so fi ngers crossed.

I am keeping a close eye on the cuttings that were taken and plants that were split, as this warm weather may encourage an early batch of aphids etc. I did

hang up a “bug house”, which is a like a small bunch of hollow canes tied together, to encourage the ladybirds and lace wings to hibernate over winter in my garden. But I don’t think many of them decided to have a snooze this year as I have seen quite a few of both around in the garden. Lets hope we don’t get frosts now.

Coff ee time – yippee. No Christmas cake this year but instead some very yummy chocolate coconut macaroons. Wonder if its being greedy having two. Hmmmmmm, Now what was my New Years Resolution? - JW

Family Law - ‘Mend it, don’t end it’

In the latest of a series of articles

about legal matters aff ecting the family, Nigel Clarke, Resolution Accredited Specialist, Collaborative Solicitor & Family Mediator from Canterbury Law Solicitors writes:

How about some good news to cheer us up as we enter the New Year with bleak forecasts about the economy, perhaps for several more years to come?

Britain’s oldest married couple celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on new year’s day and a photograph showed the couple, Robert and Susan Erskine (aged 100 and 99 respectively) smiling, holding hands and saying ‘we love one another as much now as we did then’.

Alongside this wonderful photograph was the headline ‘Mend it, don’t end it’, the sobering advice from a senior High Court judge refl ecting his grave concern about the rising social and fi nancial cost of the increase in the divorce rate.

The well respected judge, Sir Paul Coleridge, suggests that marriage breakdown is on the increase again, especially so amongst the age group sometimes described as the ‘empty nesters’. The ‘grey divorce’ is a big growth area, perhaps because couples no longer feel the need to stay together for the sake of the children who have left home or perhaps because people are living longer. It is now not uncommon for people to petition for divorce after 30 or 40 years of marriage.

The family justice system is creaking under the strain. Worryingly, there are an estimated 3.8 million children currently caught up in the court system waiting 12 months or more for a hearing.

Despite the advice that we should work hard to stay together and promote the gold standard of marriage, surely no-one readily gives up on a long term relationship or marriage without good reason. The breakdown of any relationship is a tragedy for the people concerned, their friends and relations.

In a civilised society we would all welcome any initiative that would help support and strengthen the foundations of any long term relationship - perhaps this is part of the vision of the big society - but for many couples, staying together is no longer an option.

In these cases surely the family justice system needs to focus on providing specialist help, guidance and support for the couple as they try to plan for their lives apart. In this way couples can preserve their dignity, a loving parental relationship with their children, fi nancial well-being and, yes, sometimes preserve friendships with their former partner or spouse.

The breakdown of a relationship is traumatic and painful but it need not become a battlefi eld and with the right specialist help and support, couples are, and do, sort out their futures apart in a civilised and cost eff ective way. If you are facing the trauma of a relationship breakdown, fi nd a specialist who can best help you.

vine tomatoes fried until soft, if liked.

1. Heat half the butter and the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the sliced leeks and garlic and fry over a medium-high heat until softened but not brown. Stir in the rice and cook for one minute.

2. Add a ladleful of the hot stock to the pan and simmer gently, stirring all the time. When all the liquid has been absorbed by the rice, add another ladleful of stock. Continue adding the stock in this way until the rice is tender and has a creamy texture – this will take about 20 minutes.

The Handy Household - The Labours of LemonsWe all know they go nicely with a G&T, but did you know that lemons contain enough acid to ruin the lives of most bacteria found in our kitchens? So, whether you want to sanitise a chopping board, disinfect a counter top or mop the fl oor, lemons are a great way to keep our homes clean and healthy.Lemons also make it easy to clean a microwave, simply place a bowl of water and lemon juice in the appliance and warm for a few minutes. The steam acts on any stains or lingering smells and once you’ve removed the bowl, you can simply wipe the microwave clean. When it comes to laundry, lemon juice is also brilliant for brightening your faded whites. You can either add it to your washing cycle, or soak delicates in a solution of lemon juice and water to create a mild bleach effect. What’s more, tough food or blood stains stand little chance against this wonder product – simply squeeze the juice from half a lemon over the stain and let it soak in for around 20 minutes, before rinsing with water. And the benefi ts don’t stop there, as lemon juice is well known for helping to keep us clean and healthy too. Sore throat? Mix lemon juice with honey and warm water to make a soothing drink. Garlicky and onion-smelling fi ngers can also be thoroughly cleaned by rubbing over with half a lemon and rinsing your hair in lemon juice can even help to combat chlorine-green hair after swimming. So, why not swap your harsh chemical products for the natural and economical power of lemons?

Feel the Fear And Do It Anyway. Susan Jeff ersThey say a life lived in fear is a life half-lived and Feel the Fear is based on the principle that doing something that scares us, is a good thing. It promises to show you how to ‘turn fear and indecision into confi dence and action’. Packed with real-life examples of people who have let fear dominate them, this is a very grounded and level-headed book. There are lots of practical tips and activities to help you start to face your fear, and end it.

This Book Will Save Your Life. A.M. HomesOk so it’s a fi ctional satire rather than self-help novel, but it most certainly IS life-affi rming. Written with wonderfully quirky Los Angeles as a backdrop, it’s been hailed as an antidote to modern life. When reclusive stockbroker Richard Novak ends up in the emergency room, he’s forced

to open his eyes to the world around him. It’s the perfect accompaniment for welcoming in the New Year and seizing 2012 with gusto.

How to Win Friends and Infl uence People. Dale CarnegieOne of the most successful self-help books of all time and not to be confused with the fi lm ‘How to Lose Friends and Alienate People’, which could get you fi red. Although the original was published in the 1930s, this master class in how to handle other people continues to be

relevant. With the exception of Willy Loman, there has never been a greater advocate for being ‘well-liked’ than Dale Carnegie.

Why Men Don’t Listen and

Women Can’t Read Maps. Allan and Barbara PeaseI was going to go for the obvious ‘Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus’ here but decided instead to go for the comical pairing of husband

and wife team Allan and Barbara Pease. With chapters entitled ‘Women are Touchy-Feely’ and ‘Why Men Are So Thick-skinned’ you know you’re going to get an amusing and enlightening read. If this is ‘pop psychology’ then call me Frasier Crane. Let me point out here that my Dad mumbles so much we can’t hear HIM and Mum’s an excellent map-reader.

Chicken Soup for the Soul: 101 Stories to Open the Heart and Rekindle the Spirit. Jack Canfi eld and Mark Victor HansenThe brainchild of motivational speakers, Canfi eld and Hansen, the premise is simple: heart-warming stories will make us feel better, just as chicken soup warms the cockles in the winter. The original book sold millions of copies and spawned a series that’s been translated into 54 languages. We must all be suckers for a happy ending. Enjoy it curled up with a bowl of soup and you will be joy personifi ed come February.

My boss gave me a self-help book for my 29th birthday. I was so

appalled that someone had deemed me in need of ‘help’ that I quit

and went to Australia. So you can say what you like about them, but

they really do work…one way or another! Whether it’s a new diet,

relationship or job, there’s a book that claims it’ll help you achieve

it. What better way to kick-start 2012 than turning over a new page,

and a new leaf?

New Year, New You!

offers tailored packages of personal care that can help people stay in their own home for as long as possible, rather than going into a care home before it’s really needed.
