Rita the general manager and Enid the assistant manager were both in when I arrived After introductions and hugs I was checked in and meandered to my room I opened the patio door then went and rode my bike to the stall in front of the room where I unpacked my bike

After I got my cameras and cell phone charged I chose to eat at the restaurant attached to the hotel Jungle Jims is a chain you can find all over Newfoundland

The food and service were more than decent and the place was full to the rafters I sat at the bar to eat after giving up my table to a couple The bartender was quite the gal She expressed that she was moving to St Johns to go finish her education - she is going to be a physical education teacher when she is done university and intends to continue working for Jungle Jims because she loves the work and the tips

I went to my room tagged photos and answered emails and returned phone calls and then fell into an exhausted sleep

When I got up at 430 in the morning it was to dreary skies that were still drizzling and wet pavement Ugh

I sure didnt want my first time in Newfoundland to be all rain

I sat down to write and deal with the photos and video of the day before and before I knew it the sun began to shine I was a much happier gal as I headed for breakfast

Dave and George my escorts for the morning were to arrive at around 930 am George showed up first riding a white 2013 Ultra

A short time later Dave showed up on his Yamaha I was in the process of packing the bike up and importing video from my external

hard drive to IMovie to do rough editing The process took longer than I had anticipated and it was 1030 before we were actually on our way

The ride to Lark Harbour was utterly lovely The roads were good the company was excellent and Mother Nature smiled down on us with a great big golden grinwe were on the Captain James Cook Trail filled with lovely curves and spectacular seascapes

Amazing scenery all around you makes Lark Harbour a gorgeous place for a meal

The village of Lark Harbour is a post card picture perfect fishing village The colors and characters make you smile

We stopped at a place called Marlaines Tide Watchers Cafe

I ordered a coffee and Fishermans Brewis which is a traditional dish of cod and hard

tack bread served with pork scrunchions bread and molasses

I figured if I am going to be here in Newfoundland I want to experience the local foods and traditions

Now according to Dave Fishermans Brewis came to be because of fishermen who were out in their dories who got creative Instead of just having the cod and hard tack bread to eat they would take their Southwesters and fill them up with salt water soak the cod and chunks of the hard tack in the water over night and then cook it up on their little stoves just to give them a different taste If they had molasses with them sometimes they would pour molasses in with the brew If they had pork scrunchions with them they would pour that in too

Pork scrunchions are made from pork rind and fat - the rind is scored into little cubes and then cut off the fat fried until the fat is rendered out of the cubes and the cubes are crunchy

Now one wouldnt think that sounds all that appetizing but I am up for trying almost anything and I was delighted by the meal It was yummy I had to laugh at the lady who served us - when she saw me putting butter on my bread she expressed that there was no way a Newfoundlander would put butter on their bread if they were planning on eating it with molasses as I had expressed that I would be I showed her my dads trick - put butter on one side flip the bread over and pour molasses on it - it gives the molasses a wonderful flavour - she laughed and said my Dad must have been a Newf in another life I teased right back and said he must have been as he taught us kids to love fried bologna

Lovely quilts and artwork grace this tiny restaurant

Fishermanrsquos Brewis - cod and hard tack with pork scrunchions and bread with molasses

Across the harbour is the search and rescue

One of the most spectacular things about this place is the view

As we shared our meal and looked out over this lovely lovely bay the guys told me about the whales that come into this harbour They told me a little about this town of 500 and its offerings like hiking trails and a good sized Provincial Park called Blow Me Down Provincial Park with close to 30 campsites They and their ladies often come here on Sundays from Corner Brook for a day ride

I can see why - it is positively gorgeous

After coffee and dessert we headed back to the bikes and were off towards Corner Brook again

I find it interesting that even though you have to go over the same road you came in on the views are so different in the opposite directionI supposed if you lived here it might get boring but I sure was not bored

Just outside of Corner Brook the guys and I parted company but not before I got an interview for our TV Show Ride Like a Local about our ride from George

I want to thank George and Dave for sharing the highway with me for a while - I truly enjoyed my time with these two guys

I continued on my journey to Gros Morne National Parkalone and I had no idea what a treat I was going to be in for

As I headed toward the Viking Trail I noticed the subtle changes in the landscape

I was amazed at the diversity in such a short period of time

The scenery became hilly and filled with gentle sweepers and magnificent views

Gros Morne National Park of Canada was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and it is a stunningly beautiful - stark and imposing and yet

I spent some time at the Discovery Centre on the edge of Woody Point I wanted to get a Viking Trail Pass so that I could take in an abundance of attractions that are covered by the pass and I had been told this was the best place to get it

The Discovery Centre is also where you can obtain units that allow you to find out more about what you are looking at at the various stops along the way They take your drivers license info and allow you to take the units and drop them off in a drop box when you are done If you dont drop it off they have your info so they can reach you and remind you to send it back

In the centre itself there are many displays and many of them are interactive and describe the region the history the geology the creatures and the flora and fauna

On top of the amazing displays that explain the region there is an abundance of stunning artwork to view and the staff are so helpful and knowledgeable about the park

Armed with a park pass I headed off to do filming and photography and learn about this hauntingly beautiful place

I rode to Trout River to have my supper as was recommended to me by Dave and George

Along the way I filmed some of the most amazing scenery and look forward to sharing that with you through our TV show on Eastlink - Ride Like a Local The Newfoundland episode should air sometime in December - I will also have some footage on Youtube later in December

Amazing art

Riding through this gorgeous seaside village I came across the Jacob A Crocker Heritage House and decided to take a tour before I stopped for supper The young lady giving the tour explained that Jacob A Crocker Sr who came from Dorsetshire England one of the original settlers of the region built this Biscuit Box house also known as a Salt Box house The home was built in 1898 and is indicative of the traditional fishermans home

After the tour of the Crocker home I went to the Seaside Restaurant and got my first taste

of cod tongues and I want to thank Dave for having recommended I try them because I have a new favorite appetizermeal

Light crispy and absolutely delicious are cod tongues

The restaurant is another tourism must do spot Award winning with magnificent views of the ocean the staff is friendly and attentive and the prices were affordable - the

meal was plentiful There is tons of history here too

After my delicious meal I headed back through the Tableland Mountains on my way to Rocky Harbour The scenery is so stunning On one side of the road is this lush vegetation and on the other these odd colored mountains

Newfoundland is noted for its heavily forested areas and the stark contrast in the Tableland Mountains is caused by the ultramafic rock - peridotite - which makes up the Tablelands Thought to originate in the earths mantle and forced up from the depths during a plate collision several hundred million years ago the peridotite lacks the nutrients required to sustain most plant life hence its barren appearance The rock is very low in calcium and very high in magnesium it also has a toxic amount of heavy metals Peridotite is high in iron which accounts for its brownish colour

After marveling at the stark and haunting beauty of the Tablelands it was time for the scenic ride to Rocky Harbour

I stopped in Woody Point for fuel and the gentleman who runs the station came out to make sure that I knew he only had regular gas to offer I thanked him and expressed that I carry Amsoil Octane Boost with me and that regular gas was just fine I thought his consideration of a riders needs to be absolutely wonderful

I headed towards Rocky Harbour marvelling at the varied beauty of the landscape The wonderful rolling hills and sweeping curves accompanied the lush scenery and the glimpses of water

As I entered Rocky Harbour there was no question in my mind how this community got its name

Rocky Harbour is the largest community in Gros Morne National Park and is filled with opportunities to explore Newfoundlands culture and heritage

I was to stay at the Ocean View Hotel and take in the Anchors Aweigh show

I got settled into my room and went downstairs to get my ticket I was in for a treat and a half

The Anchors Aweigh band is comprised of

highly talented musicians who will keep your toes tapping and have you laughing so hard that tears are rolling and your belly hurts They are a traditional Newfoundland band that gives you a true taste of the humour and culture that Newfoundland has to offer

I have never enjoyed a show so much and I encourage you to go see it if you are ever in the region

I woke up to a gorgeous morning in Rocky Harbour and after a very satisfying breakfast I jumped on the bike and headed to Lobster Head Cove which is just outside of Rocky Harbour The lighthouse can be seen from pretty much every vantage point in Rocky Harbour

The Lighthouse is an interpretive centre that offers the visitor much information on the region the fishing the way of lifeit was built in 1897 and remained as a working lighthouse until 1960 when it became automated

There are many impressive displays filled with regional information and I encourage you to take it in if you should ever find yourself in Rocky Harbour

My next destination was the Western Brook Fjord Boat Tour by Bon Tours

I rode towards Western Brook feeling a little anxious how would I manage the 3 km walk to the boat

I got to the parking area and saw a fellow Albertans bike in the parking lot I parked beside the bike and flipped the skid lid that was hanging off the handle bars over so that it would not get filled with water from the impending rain storm About 1 Km in on the walk to the tour I ran across the rider who was heading back to his bike he was walking out after taking the tour and told him what I had done - I didnt want him thinking someone had tampered with his bike by this time it was raining gently

That would soon change to monsoon like rain

I walked along the path and marveled at the mud bog that seemed to stretch on foreverIn spite of the rain I stopped to read many of the interpretive displays along the way

The path offers benches in many places and I availed myself of them once or twice my

crippled up feet are not used to that much walking and in motorcycle boots it was even less pleasant

As I would soon find out the walk was MORE than worth it

The man in red on the left was our tour guide and he did a fabulous job of telling us all about this amazing little piece of heaven here on earth

The stunning landscapes in the Western Brook Pond as it is known is surrounded by steep rock walls 600 m (2000 ft) high that were carved by melting glaciers

After the glaciers melted the land rebounded and the fjord was cut off from the sea

The salt water was eventually flushed from the fjord and it is now fresh water The catchment area is composed of igneous rock with relatively thin soil so the waters feeding Western Brook Pond are very low in nutrients

and the lake is classified as ultra-oligotrophic which means that it has such low nutrient that very little algae grows in the water making the water very clear and because of its high oxygen content it is classed a drinking water The Western Brook Pond is fed by Stag Brook at the extreme eastern end of the lake and by numerous waterfalls cascading from the plateau above

(1150 ft) is one of the highest in eastern North America

The tour came to an end and we all disembarked - based on the chatter I heard I think we all felt we has seen a bit of heaven here on earth The rain had stopped and the bugs were out in full force I was grateful I had thought to take my personal Off dispenser (a small clip on device with a fan and an Off disc in it) with me After the 3 KM hike back to the bike it was time to head to Cow Head

The wind was gusting at about 50KM per hour but at least there was no rain

My next stop was to be the Shallow Bay Motel in Cow Head The front desk staff here were more than polite and efficient check in was a breeze and I was offered help to my room if I needed it

I was planning on taking in the dinner theatre that night but I made the mistake of taking a napbig mistake I never woke up until the show was half over My loss as I heard from

those who did attend that it was a blast

I had a wonderful supper of fish and chips which rivaled the ones that I had had with Renee Samms of the Wreck Riders only a few days before and then I headed out to the hot tub and sauna but not before asking how Cow Head got its name Apparently one of the rock formations in the harbour looks like a cows head from out on the ocean

After a relaxing soak I headed to bed where I slept really hard

In the morning I woke to clearing skies and packed up the bike

This full service motel offers ocean view rooms as well as drive up rooms for motorcycles and I chatted with a number of riders who were also staying here They were from St Johns and out for a tour of their gorgeous province

After getting the bike loaded up I headed in for a late breakfast

The staff in this motel are super friendly and the waitresses were all so sweet with their yes me darlinresponses to everything you asked for

As I would later learn Newfinese is a true language of its own and each region and a lot of the smaller communities have their own dialect

My next destination was the small community of La Scie and I couldnt wait to experience it

When wersquore out there on the roads wind in our faces and bugs in our teeth often wersquore there for the solitude and privacy of it all

However there are those times when we prefer the company of others for our rides and there are just

about too many ways to find folks to ride with

Now for the purposes of this discussion Irsquom talking about the people who are traveling with you on their own motorcycles not that person sitting on the pillion seat although I may offer opinions on how to choose a rear seater when Irsquove been drinking I have never been drunk enough to put those opinions on paper- yoursquore on your own there my friend And I wish you nothing but success I will add

Seriously though finding people to ride with can be as challenging as finding a bike to ride was Not only do you want to ride with people who agree (in a general way) with your thoughts on the rules of the road you want companions who have a similar riding style (maybe ldquoa break once an hourrdquo or ldquoonly stop for gas and copsrdquo)

Itrsquos very likely that you might want to ride

with people who have a similar style of motorcycle (cruiser sportbike hardtail etchellip) but thatrsquos not always the best way to choose

There are more styles of riding and attitudes than there are motorcycles and if you end up on the road with the wrong bunch yoursquore not going to have a good time and thatrsquos pretty much like wasting a riding day and therersquos

NO good reason to waste a day on the bike with frustration and anger if itrsquos avoidable

Now certainly sometimes wersquore going to find ourselves in a situation where itrsquos more about the reason yoursquore there to ride- charity events club outings parades rallies these can all be scenarios where you donrsquot get to pick your partners as carefully For these things I try to go with several riders that I do know and trust so we can form our own little island of common thinking

However a lot of the time if you just think about who is attending the ride yoursquore thinking about going on (and what kind of ride it is) yoursquoll be able to make wiser choices

Often the first thing we do when we get a new bike or move to a new area is look for those who ride the same kind of machine and thatrsquos often a good start

I sit on a sub-litre light touring bike and I normally (85 of the time) ride 2-up As a result I tend not to do a lot of speeding I enjoy the curves but donrsquot make a sport out of them and I (as much as is humanly possible) like to pretty much ride by the rules of the road and the laws of the area

I get annoyed by someone who repeatedly runs up on my tail or is constantly bouncing between WFO throttle and full brake when in a pack I donrsquot like those who canrsquot keep a straight line in a slow ride and insist that they know the basic hand signals for group riding

I might prefer to ride with different folks

on a day ride than I would on a longer tour because on day rides we usually have a destination that is paramount and I want to get there On longer tourist rides I like to see the sights along the way take some pictures and enjoy the view and the history along the way so obviously I like to go with folks who are similarly ldquotouristyrdquo in those situations

I look for people who are relaxed and regard riding as a way of relaxing further I donrsquot live by my odometer and I donrsquot care how many kilometers you put on today except as a function of how much closer wersquove maybe gotten to a shared goal or destination

To me itrsquos not actually about how fast I can mile out my machine and if you rode 15000 km last summer and canrsquot tell me a single thing about the areas you rode through you donrsquot ride for the same reasons I do

I donrsquot care if we only go 150 km as long as we have a great day doing it and share a lot of fun I like to ride with those who are confident but not cocky skilled to the point I can learn from them who set a decent pace but not a frantic pace and not a snailrsquos crawl

(unless itrsquos warranted by the road the scenery or bikinis) This means I donrsquot have a lot of riding buddies on sport bikes that are barely legal or who prefer to find out just how hot they can take every corner and thatrsquos not going to surprise anyone

So I ride with my Vulcan Riders Association buddies and the Motorcycle Ride for Dad group and Belt Drive Betty and friends when

I can- although she can outlast me by a factor of 2 when it comes to covering ground in a day just trying to get somewhere so maybe sometimes Irsquom not on HER list

I personally avoid ldquomeetup groupsrdquo because they donrsquot tend to be filled with people I know and I prefer to know at least some in order to create that bubble of ldquolike minded folksrdquo I make on the spot decisions all the time- if I decide to jump in on a ride and arrive to find the parking lot full of adventure touring bikes that have a LOT of scratches on the plastics and riders that look like they might have just as many I might reconsider

Not only am I not going to have much fun in that style of riding Irsquom going to hold the group back from enjoying what they do because I probably canrsquot go the same places as they want to I should move along and learn to read ride descriptions better

So really you need to ask yourself just a few simple questions in order to determine if yoursquore finding the right people to ride with

Are these folks on the same kinds of machine as I am (at least some of them) or am I in the wrong place today IF they are NOT have I talked to some people to see what kind of ride Irsquom joining in on Maybe if theyrsquore running some kind of Tail of the Dragon practice session itrsquos not for me (OR if theyrsquore NOT doing that it might not be for you etc)

Am I prepared for the ride that is proposed Some people consider a ldquogood day riderdquo to be 700km thru the mountains with little stopping

and less civilization Do I have the machine fuel supplies and gear to go along Thinking yoursquore going for a 2 hour highway hop and ending up 3 hours from home on gravel without rain gear in a downpour can really mess up your weekend

Do I feel comfortable with the skill levels of those around me in comparison to my own This not only means that experienced riders might not enjoy cruising with a full group of newbies (although some donrsquot mind the teaching and thatrsquos cool too) but some newbies might not enjoy trying to keep up with or follow the rules of a group of seasoned hardcore back country cruisers

As a biker or bikie if I were to live in Australia I would be appalled by this type of police profiling I wear the patch of the Veterans Ladies on my back a support system for the Veterans UN NATO group

We are NOT a motorcycle group however many of the groups members just happen to ride

Since when did Australia become a police state Does the law not understand that the term 1 er means that out of EVERY biker only 1 are into criminal activity

Soon youll be seeing the law come into effect that theyll have to provide a criminal background check prior to receiving a motorcycle license

I shouldnt be giving them ideas

Once upon a time I wanted to immigrate to Australia I love the weather the dialect the scenery Now Im not so sure If this is how they treat the biking community I dont want any part of it

The end of days the zombie apocalypse is upon us As I sit eating my lunch I cant help but be amazed at the hordes of people in the restaurant mindlessly tapping away at their Smartphones unable to hold even the most basic of conversations with

the person directly across from them Outside it is not much better People shuffle to and fro with their heads down throwing birds with anger management issues at hapless pigs

They are lost and bewildered They spend days camping on cold concrete just to buy the latest thing that they dont need

An opportunity missed when they could have spent that time enjoying any one of the thousands of parks and recreation areas across this great land Hell I would even be impressed if they would look up from their outdated phones to take the time to look at the beautify architecture that defined our cities our culture

Sadly the population it getting stupider Its taxing dealing with people day in and day out who dont understand the basic idea of business of providing a service for payment

They dont understand how something that they neglected and ignored for years has now

finally quite working I should guarantee that it would keep working forever The occasional difficult challenged customer is becoming an everyday occurrence They drag me down to their level making me dumber as I have to dumb it dumb more and more to the level that a couple idiots would understand and they ask me more absurd questions

It is days like this that I look forward to throwing my leg over my bike and heading out Nature beautiful nature Bikers understand that there is more to life then being connected all the time (sadly the rush to put more on bikes leaves that statement useless) We understand cause and effect that affects what we do We work in and out of traffic revel in the beauty that surrounds us

Bikers Against Drunk Drivers in the US has been under investigation regarding how it spends the money people donate

Cyril Huze did a piece on this rather dubious appearing group - How does BADD Spend your Money An On Going Investigation

There is no crime in being paid an industryregional standard amount to do a job for a non profit

Not many can devote 40 hours a week for free to a charity or non profit People need to eat

But when you read this article you will see that there are a number of things that have transpired that make the people investigating BADD have some very legitimate questions to ask

According to state records in 2012 BADD took in about $879000 but gave less than one percent mdash about $8700 mdash to victims Instead the organization spent about $200000 on rent nearly $32000 on bank charges about $28000 on a prize display nearly $7000 on supplies about $6600 on postage and shipping and approximately $13000 on advertising state records show The year before BADD reported revenue of nearly a million dollars but gave only about $9200 to victims while spending nearly half a million on professional fund raisers

While state filings do indicate that outreach is part of their mission so is helping victims which is where experts say BADD is falling short Perkins would not reveal how much money hersquos making from BADD On state returns he lists his address as a UPS mailbox in Ormond Beach Florida but it turns out he actually lives a little farther south Towering above the Miami Beach skyline in the shadow of South Beach is the Portofino Tower

Records show Perkins lives in this ldquoultra luxuryrdquo high rise with a woman named Wahida Benferhat who coincidentally is listed as the charityrsquos director Records show Benferhat bought the condo worth about $950000 in March According to the property appraiser there is no mortgage which suggests the nearly $1 million condo was paid for in cash

Records show Perkins also owns a 27-foot pleasure boat similar to one that according to the state is registered under the charityrsquos name Despite traveling to Miami to speak

with Perkins he declined WESH 2primes interview requestshellip I am not sure that the BADDrsquos Sponsors are aware of BADDrsquos official record regarding the very poor amount provided to those who are hurt by drunken drivers

Here in Canada we are not immune to those who appear to be rather

dubious either

Ray Sasseville and his crew are attempting a comeback event at the old Merritt Music Mountain Fest Site - dubbed as Sturgis Canada 2014 the New event is filled with American entertainers and Celebs from the American Motorcycle Community

Under the header of Sturgis South Dakota Friends and Attendees on the home page they listJasmine Cain - Headliner actKimmy Cruz - HOST of the 1st Sturgis CanadaJack Schit - EMCEETheir security head is even from the US - Keith DeNinno

They are apparently counting on people who want to meet the Stars of the real Sturgis OR perhaps they have had to go that far a field to find people willing to work with them

To my way of thinking I believe they are hoping that the American Biker Celebs will give the event some credibility In fact they appear to use the name Sturgis SD as often as they can in their write ups about their American Celebs

Kimmy Cruz is coming back for a third time this time as the HOST - a message I am sure the promoters want people to absorb

From the Sturgis South Dakota Friends and Attendees information on the home page

I have been fortunate to be part of the first two festivals and feel honored to be asked to host the historic first ever Sturgis Canada See you all there

I guess a paid endorsement like that is supposed to make the facts look less unfavourable

The organizers appear to KNOW they have a credibility issue I am sure of it because if you look on their web site - they even have a link called PROOFand on that page they offer up a page 2 where they have Babes amp Bikes but guess what - at least 5 of those pictures are from the Internet and not their event

They are using a blend of photos from the Hay days of the Merritt Music Mountain Fest and from the failed Sturgis 2011 and 2012 events to prove they are legit and attempt to give themselves the appearance of people who know how to do a good job

Under the Charity link - they are using old 2011 and 2012 letters from ministers of the government to lend credibility to who they are (If the secretary who typed this was mine Id fire her)

When the entertainers who are paid to

perform and the celebrities who are paid to endorse this event go home I wonder will the 2014 event leave as much financial destruction as it has in the past

I wonder if people will leave feeling like their pockets were raped and hoovered clean

Yes Canada needs a great national motorcycle event It would be a wonderful thing - however in my personal humble opinion anything run by Ray Sasseville and his team is suspect based on their track record

The fact that they feel the need to associate themselves with the most prolific and prestigious of all biker events in Sturgis SD by hiring so many of the people who are connected to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in SD makes me ask the questionis there not an original bone in their collective bodies

In the above linked article I chronicle the information about this man and his financial dealings from public records pulling it all together in one spot so you can educate yourself

The embers glowed softly and in their dim light I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight My wife was asleep her head on my chest My daughter beside me angelic in rest

Outside the snow fell a blanket of white Transforming the yard to a winter delight The sparkling lights in the tree I believe Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve

My eyelids were heavy my breathing was deep Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep In perfect contentment or so it would seem So slumbered I perhaps I started to dream

The sound wasnrsquot loud and it wasnrsquot too near But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear Perhaps just a cough I didnrsquot quite know Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow

My soul gave a tremble I struggled to hear And I crept to the door just to see who was near Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night A lone figure stood his face weary and tight

A soldier I puzzled some twenty years old Perhaps a Trooper huddled here in the cold Alone in the dark he looked up and smiled Standing watch over me and my wife and my child

So when did you know When did you first decide Im going to ride

Was it like a bolt from the blue Was it always a thought in the back of your mind

Was it something that was just taken for granted

Was it Your thought or someone elsesWere you 2 12 or 21 Or older still

When did you first hear the sound of a Harley amp KNOW what it was Or Honda or any bike for that matter

Before you thought about riding did the passing-by of a motorcycle elicit as much excitement as a sink full of dishes

When someone you knew got a bike did you hear the sound wonder for a sec if that was them but since you couldnt really tell what Direction it was comingor going soon dismiss it

If someone you cared about got a bike was your attention held just that wee bit longer Did you at least try to discern the difference between whatever they were on amp something else

And was it that sound that captured your

heart amp decided which bike was for you

And the more involved you got were you able to recognize in a moment the different bikes amp disregard the ones passing if it werent your kind of bike

And were you then able to judge where the rider was in the distance just by the soundbased on your knowledge of riding

And now that you ride do you still get that teeny thrill when you hear the rumble And I know you look

So when did you Know Did you have to convince anyone Do you still Can others tell you ride in the off-season because they too know that look And if they asked could you tell them how long it is til the Season begins again

Is it still a part of you when you Dont ride or is it like an onoff switch for you Are you jaded amp no longer feel the thrill or joy Or do you still grin like a Cheshire cat in the privacy of your driveway before you join others

And Because you know does it help Others to know too

And if you know when to start will you know when to Stop

The Best Offense is a Good Defense

Its been said that the best offense is a good defense Well when riding a motorcycle a good defense is exactly what you need if you want to live to be a ripe old biker

Heres scenario 1 Youre cruising down the left land of the highway the vehicle in front of you signals a left hand turn Of course you are looking way ahead as you should be and you can see the left turn lane approaching The vehicle starts to move into the left turn lane and now the question is where should you be I would say if youre like me and you like to ride in the left portion of your lane you should now move as far right in your lane as you can The reason I say this is because so many times Ive seen the driver decide at the last second to change his mind and suddenly pull back into the left lane

You can almost bet he neither knows you are there or cares If you move to the right part of your lane start covering your brakes and get prepared for him to move back into the left hand lane you will at least have half a chance of being able to squeeze by him and the car to your right Always plan for the worse and be prepared for it

Heres scenario 2 You are on a 3 lane highway heading north theres an island which separates the roadway from the southbound 3 lanes and there is a break in the island which allows cars to cross from one side to the other You see an SUV in the island waiting to make a left hand turn What you cant see is the vehicle to the north of the SUV which is trying to pull into your side of the roadway If you cant see that vehicle you can bet he cant see you About 50 of the time especially if it is a busy roadway you can bet that vehicle you cant see is going to pull right out in front of you You should always be prepared for a situation like this Remember he might end up with a dented fender but you would be lucky to survive such a situation

What should you do Well its just common sense Slow down as you approach the break in the road cover your brakes check your right side rear view mirror and prepare to either brake or swerve Remember you cant do both at the same time Plan ahead in your mind what you are going to do The same thing applies if a vehicle to your right is attempting to pull onto the highway in your path from a side road If you always plan for the worse youll be ready when it happens because after all youve got a plan

Remember when you are riding a motorcycle you need to be defensive It could mean your life

According to madehowcom Gasoline is primarily a mixture of two volatile liquids heptane and isooctane Pure heptane a lighter fuel burns so quickly that it produces a great amount of knocking in an engine Pure isooctane evaporates slowly and produces virtually no knocking The ratio of heptane to isooctane is measured by the octane rating The greater the percentage of isooctane the less knocking is produced and the higher the octane rating For example an octane rating of 87 is comparable to a mixture of 87 isooctane and 13 heptane

Octane then is basically a measure of how much compression a fuel can withstand before it spontaneously ignites When gas ignites by compression instead of from the spark of the spark plug it causes engine knock

91 octane fuel is less volatile and burns more efficiently than 87 octane fuel (87 89 and 91 are the three most common octane levels available)

Gasoline has a shelf life of approximately 30-60 days after that period of time it begins to break down and becomes gummy (resin) and produces a varnish that coats everything that the fuel touched

Because I live in the north during the course of my riding season I come across a lot of places that only have regular (87 octane) fuel I also find myself at a lot of pumps that offer three levels of octane from one hose

According to an article in the Globe and

Mail The hose and dispensing nozzle are always full of fuelrdquo Shell says adding that the residual volume in the hose from the last use depends on the diameter and length of the hose but is commonly about half a litre

The only time such a small quantity would be of concern would be when filling a very small tank such as a motorcycle

purchase is more than 10 litres the total sale will be ldquoon-spec for octane and meet the 91 AKI standardrdquo It added that Weights and Measures Canada which monitors and inspects pumps and controls the related regulations approved the use of ldquosingle hose blender pumpsrdquo many years ago

I have been asked by other riders at these one hose three grade pumps why I will use regular gas with Amsoils Motorcycle Octane Boost instead of filling up with high test They are curious as to performance differences and the expense

Well part of the reason I use octane boost is sited in the above snippet from the Globe and Mail article

If you are on a motorcycle you are literally being hosed at those pumps that offer three grades of gasoline from one hose About a half litre or more (depending on the diameter and length of the hose) of whatever gas was purchased before stays in that hose Its only by pennies but those pennies add up and YOU ARENT really getting what you paid forInstead of getting 91 Octane your fuel might now be at 90 or less Not only that as prices get higher fewer and fewer people use the high octane fuels which means that you can get bad or degraded high test fuel

I always carry Amsoils Motorcycle Octane Boost with me because there are many places where I live and ride here in Northern Alberta and even farther north that do not carry anything but 87 octane - regular gas Because

gas evaporates and degrades over 30-60 days it is not practical for most gas stations in the North to carry a fuel that is seldom used

Is using Octane Boost going to improve circumstances for your pocketbook or hurt it Lets do some math

If I purchase 12 litres of regular gas at $1169 (264 gallons) I am going to pay $1404

If I purchase 12 litres of premium at $1309 (264 gallons) I am going to pay $1571(There are 4546 litres to a gallon)

The difference in price is $167 based on todays fuel prices in (Whitecourt AB from GasBuddy)

A bottle of Amsoil Motorcycle Octane Boost is going to run you about $500

I am going to use 12 a bottle in the scenario above at a cost of $250

They recommend 13 ounces of Octane Boost per gallon and say that one 4 ounce bottle will treat 4-6 gallons of gas (The tank on my bike is rated as a 5 gallon tank - 2273 litres)

Am I saving any money using Motorcycle Octane Boost No I am not

The reasons I use Amsoil Motorcycle Octane Boost

Less wear and tear on my engine and fuel system I am getting a more consistent octane level which means better low rpm

performance and better start up

It means less engine knockpinging that can cause all kinds of internal damage and I am keeping my fuel system cleaner because of the detergents that are in the product

The other benefit is a less degraded fuel if I happen not to ride for a week or two

You have to be careful with any Octane Boost because if you spill it and dont wipe it up immediately you will end up with stained paint

For me as a rider in the North carrying Amsoils Motorcycle Octane Boost just makes sense and if you plan on riding in the North I recommend you pack a few bottles in your saddlebags

I also began using Amsoils 20W50 Synthetic

They can arrange to have your oils filters etc sent ahead to your dealer or repair shop of choice

I used their ship ahead service during my 2013 Bikers United in Remembrance Conga - I let Kelly know which repair shop to ship my oils filters and octane boost to and I had the piece of mind knowing that my bike would have consistency in its services and the products that were used

Like many young men the boy didnt really know what he wanted to do and he didnt seem too concerned about it

Bikerrsquos Christmas WishesDonrsquot know about you but my family and close friends never have a problem buying a gift for me thatthey know Irsquoll be happy with I mean how hard is it to drive or ride down to the Harley store

Honestly do we ever really have everything we want for our bike This past summer as I rode with a lot of people Irsquod only recently met I found this to be a consistent topic of conversation a common refrain was ldquoI need to get this upgraderdquo or ldquoI need to change this or thatrdquo on my bike

Hey new paint or fenders maybe bigger tires an engine upgrade or handlebars or how about side bags or a personal favorite of mine louder pipes

Then there are the always popular lsquogiftrsquo ideas like sunglasses mugs rings T-shirts hoodies and desk or wall ornaments I stop short at calling some of this lsquoartrsquo So you get the message here bikers are easy folks to buy Christmas gifts for

I know of people who collect shot glasses calendars T-shirts pins patches and a wide range of other items so when Irsquom at a biker event or show I always find it intriguing to

see just what it is people are selling buying and itrsquos at these shows that I find myself buying Christmas and birthday gifts for my biker friends

Speaking from experience when figuring out the costs of any upgrade to my bike I always managed to under-estimate what the end result was going to be ndash in some cases by hundreds of dollars

I recall the salesman at a Harley dealership once telling me that so long as my significant other received an equal amount of ldquoblingrdquo that would help take away the sting and keep the waters calm wise words from a man of experience Irsquod say

In life I have figured out that anything worth having does have a cost and sometimes the price we pay for something like respect integrity a reputation a relationship can be significant

This canrsquot be measured in dollars but rather in sacrifices made opposition sometimes suffering and the hard work associated with building a good character and a clear conscience And often times taking as stand to do the ldquoright thingrdquo is not popular nor without consequences yet in our ldquoOwnerrsquos Manual for Liferdquo (the Bible) we read in Proverbs chapter two verses 7 amp 8 ldquo He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest He is a shield to those who walk with integrity He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to himrdquo

This Christmas season share gifts from the heart in both word and action love and kindness are in short supply in our world and genuinely given from the heart they can change lives and bless the giver in many ways

After I got my cameras and cell phone charged I chose to eat at the restaurant attached to the hotel Jungle Jims is a chain you can find all over Newfoundland

The food and service were more than decent and the place was full to the rafters I sat at the bar to eat after giving up my table to a couple The bartender was quite the gal She expressed that she was moving to St Johns to go finish her education - she is going to be a physical education teacher when she is done university and intends to continue working for Jungle Jims because she loves the work and the tips

I went to my room tagged photos and answered emails and returned phone calls and then fell into an exhausted sleep

When I got up at 430 in the morning it was to dreary skies that were still drizzling and wet pavement Ugh

I sure didnt want my first time in Newfoundland to be all rain

I sat down to write and deal with the photos and video of the day before and before I knew it the sun began to shine I was a much happier gal as I headed for breakfast

Dave and George my escorts for the morning were to arrive at around 930 am George showed up first riding a white 2013 Ultra

A short time later Dave showed up on his Yamaha I was in the process of packing the bike up and importing video from my external

hard drive to IMovie to do rough editing The process took longer than I had anticipated and it was 1030 before we were actually on our way

Todays morning destination - Lark Harbour

The ride to Lark Harbour was utterly lovely The roads were good the company was excellent and Mother Nature smiled down on us with a great big golden grinwe were on the Captain James Cook Trail filled with lovely curves and spectacular seascapes
