24 MAY 2014 ~ THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Most of know that Erma Bombeck was a famous humorist
from Dayton, Ohio, who won great acclaim for her innumerable
newspaper articles. She once told the story about how she was in
church, sitting behind a younger woman and her child. The little
one wasn’t up to any mischief, like rummaging through his
mother’s handbag or running his toy cars up and down the pews; he
was simply sitting there, smiling at everyone around him.
Suddenly his mother caught sight of what he was doing.
Immediately she jerked him around, gave him a smack and, as the
tears began to fall, told him, “Yes, that’s better!”
Erma tells how she would have loved to take the little
fellow into her arms and explain to him that God isn’t like that:
God, the real God, is a smiling God, an understanding God, a
caring God. She wanted to tell him that, amidst so many solemnly
pious people, his little smiling face seemed like a ray of hope.
Perhaps when that youngster grew up he would come across the
Gospel passage we’ve just been listening to, and would discover
what Jesus-—the human face of God—-is really like.
In our Gospel Lesson today, it’s the night of the Last
Supper. Jesus’ heart is filled with fear and foreboding: in just a few
hours’ time he will face the most gruesome of fates—-death by
crucifixion. Yet his thoughts are centred not on himself but on his
disciples, “my friends”, as he calls them. He knows how
devastating his death will be for them. How lonely and vulnerable
they will feel without his visible presence. So he reassures them
with the promise, “I will not leave you orphans”, and says, “I shall
ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with
you for ever.”
The Greek word for advocate is rich in meaning—-a
comforter, a consoler, a counsellor. Jesus has been all these to his
friends, and now he assures them that someone will continue his
work. This special helper, joint gift of Father and Son, is of course
the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of love and truth; the Spirit who,, as love,
is at the heart of the Church; the Spirit who, as truth, enables us to
remain firm in the truths of our faith despite the many pressures we
face in daily life.
Today’s other Lessons give us glimpses of the Holy Spirit
in action. In the first Lesson, the Spirit enables Philip to proclaim,
to announce fearlessly, the good news of Christ to the people in
Samaria. Then, through the coming of the Holy Spirit in the
sacrament of confirmation, the newly baptised are strengthened in
their faith and their desire to share it with others. We learn that
there was “great rejoicing”. Joy is one of the special gifts of the
Holy Spirit. The second Lesson suggests that gentleness
accompanies the gift of joy. St. Peter says we ought to be ready to
offer an explanation of those who enquire about “the hope” that is
ours as Christians, but he insists it must be done gently, always,
“with courtesy and respect”.
Years ago, Pope Paul VI was asked, “What is the greatest
need of the Church today?” Without hesitation he replied: “the
Holy Spirit”. That need has not diminished with the passing of the
decades. The word “Advocate”, used of the Holy Spirit, literally
means someone called in. It has been wisely said that the Holy
Spirit seldom gatecrashes: The Spirit normally waits to be called in,
waits to be invited. These final few weeks before Pentecost, the
feast of the Holy Spirit, are the ideal time for us to offer the
invitation, praying earnestly that we may be ever more richly
blessed with the Holy Spirit and the Spirit’s gifts of love and joy
and power and gentleness. Of course, the Holy Spirit has been
with us since baptism; and so what we are really praying for is that
we may open our hearts and respond ever more generously to our
divine guest. In that way we shall be renewed both as individuals
and as Church.
Jesus was anxious that his friends should not feel like
orphans. We are his friends, too. Why then, would we want to
remain orphans when, on request, we can experience the loving
support of the Holy Spirit who is, in the words of a well-known
hymn, “best gift of God above”?
I have been informed by the Bishop that Father James is
being transferred to special ministry. He is to be full time
Chaplain, teacher and Director of Campus Ministry at Saint Joseph
High School in Metuchen. I believe it has been his aspiration to be
a full-time teacher in a Catholic high school. The Bishop has given
him this wonderful opportunity to do so. I am sure that we will all
miss Fr. James, especially the young people of our parish. I know
that I will miss his decorating skills as well as his ability to plan
programs and activities. Let us pray for the success of his new
ministry and may God grant him his heart’s desire. Father James
will celebrate the Noon Mass on June 8th after which we will have
a reception in the cafeteria for him. His last day at Saint Ann’s will
be the 10th of June. We will receive a replacement associate on
that day; however, as of now, I do not know who it will be.
In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely—visit
them if you can. Please remember to pray for all who have
wandered from the Faith and all who have died. Also, pray for the
souls of all the faithful departed of our Parish Family.
May God always be pleased with us!
Monsignor Michael
Our Scripture Lessons remind us that:
...in his compassion for his disciples, in his promise of the Holy Spirit, Jesus reveals the true nature of God;
...the first and second readings afford us glimpses of the Holy Spirit’s action
...we can “call in” the Advocate to share the Spirit’s gift with us and enable us to be renewed—especially as we
make ready for Pentecost. May God always be pleased with us. Amen!

UPDATE: for St. Ann Church
Bishop’s Appeal as of 5//14
To date, the Development Department in the
Diocese of Metuchen has
received pledges totaling $57,181.09 and payments
totaling $54,672.09 from 300 parishioners.
This represents 100.3% of your $57,000.00 goal.
Thank you for your efforts.
Greetings from the Office of the Diaconate Our goal is for you to become more familiar with the ministry
of deacons, their role in our Church and the requirements for
ordination.
Question #11: Since the Bishop has priests, why does he need deacons?
The bishop needs both priests and deacons, because their min-
istries are different. As was said before, deacons are not or-
dained simply to help priests or to fill in where there are short-
ages of priests. Therefore, even though deacons may at times
exercise some of the same ministries as priests, they still re-
main their own unique set of ministries as well, and the bishop
needs both in his pastoral care of the diocese. Even more fun-
damental, the deacon is a sign of Christ the Servant within the
community, just as a priest is a sign of Christ the High Priest,
Cardinal Walter Kasper has written that priests and deacons are
like “the two arms of the bishop.”
DEACON RECRUITING IS NOW UNDERWAY
The Diocese is looking for men who are interested in becoming
Permanent Deacons. A new diaconate formation class will
begin in late August 2015. A General Information meeting is
being conducted at the St. John Neumann Pastoral Center in Pis-
cataway on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 7 pm. If you believe you
are being called to this ministry, you and your wife are cordially
invited to attend this meeting. If you have any
questions, please contact Terry Gertz in the Office of the
Diaconate (732-562-1900, ext. 1710).

WEEK AHEAD
Dear Friends of St. Ann School,
We are in the final inning of our year
together. Every teacher has built in special
moments and activities to this part of the year.
It is not the time for students to forget all they learned about right
and wrong. Respect, kindness, honesty, fairness and stewardship
are always in order.
With that in mind, I must comment on an inspiring Art
Event held by our 8th grade. Each selected a piece of art
produced this year. The Gallery was open for showing at 2:00
pm. Our soon to be alumni members spoke of their art
articulately, intelligently, and with confidence. As I moved from
one display to another, the personality and talent of each artist
surfaced. Art is the vehicle from which the soul speaks. These
young souls magnify goodness, clarity, forthrightness, and
beauty.
Most of the parishioners of St. Ann Parish remember
their good old school days. You have finished your time roaming
the halls of educational institutions. You share precious
memories of Church and school with those of us in the thick of
schooling today.
You showed up for life and live all of it fully. Let our
children see you living life in your attendance at Mass and
Church functions. This is good example but also encouragement.
I am proud to be part of this chapter of our children’s
lives. Each day is filled with excitement and meaning. Not one
is to be missed. Like you, we are tempted to quit early or change
our behavior to let people know we are finished with something.
But you teach us that in or out of school we are God’s people.
We have responsibility to act accordingly.
Good things are happening. Thank you for helping us not to miss
out on anything.
God bless you,
Sr. Mary Klersey, MPF
Principal
