    The Chronicle

We enter the New Year with the worlds

    four largest economies currently undergoing

major transions. The US is striving to boost

growth in a fractured polical environment.

The recent announcement that it would start

to taper down its QE Policy of $85billion

bond-buying program had sent the Sensex

into a zzy. China is moving from a growth

model based on investment and exports to

one led by internal demand. Europe is strug-

gling to preserve the integrity of its common

currency while resolving a multude of com-

plex instuonal issues. And Japan is trying

to combat two decades of deaon with

    aggressive and unconvenonal monetary

    policies.

Coming back to the year just gone by, Sfels

    December Condence Index remained above

the 50-level for both air and sea, and set yet

another record high as the overall index g-

ure increased 0.4points to 57.5 as economies

in Europe and the US connue on the road to recov-

ery. Despite some declines on individual tradelanes,

the overall current situaon remained good. For

Airfreight, the current situaon for all trade lanes

combined increased almost 2.0 points to 52.8, while

for Sea-freight it increased 2.6 points to 56.3.

From an ISC perspecve, India-FF and Pakistan met

their 4th quarter Operang Prot budgets (at con-

stant currencies) while Bangladesh missed it by a

whisker, falling short by just a percent. For the full

Year, India-FF, Pakistan and Bangladesh met their OP

budget. ISC-FF beat its OP budget by 5% for the quar-

ter and by 12% for the full year. ISC -Consolidated

(inclusive of India-CLD numbers) beat its OP budget

by 1% and showed a 40% YoY OP growth.

Looking ahead, following were IMFs forecasts:

As of January 2014, the IMF forecasts global

growth of 3.7% in 2014, mainly on account of

recoveries in advanced economies. 2013 global

    growth was 3.0%.

The IMF says growth in the US will be 2.8% in

    2014, up from 1.9% in 2013.

The Euro area recorded negave growth of -

0.4% in 2013. Growth of 1.0% is ancipated in

    2014.

Chinese growth in 2013 was 7.7%. It is predicted

to slow to 7.5% in 2014.

Indias growth was 4.4% in 2013. Its economy is

expected to grow by 5.4% in 2014.

Japans economy grew by 1.7% in 2013. The

same growth rate is forecast for

    2014.

WTOs forecasts for FY15 on merchan-dise trade, Exports and Import growth

    are:

    WTO expects total merchandise

trade growth to be 2.5% in 2013.

It is forecast to rise to 4.5% in

    2014.

    Developed economies exports

forecast to grow by 1.5% in 2013

    and 2.8% in 2014. Developing

    economies exports forecast to

grow by 3.6% in 2013 and 6.3% in

    2014.

Developed economies importsforecast to grow by -0.1% in 2013

    and 3.2% in 2014. Developing

During the CBR Session Mr. S M Abbas

    Country Manager UTiPakistan, expressed his

sincere gratude to the enre country man-

agement and working team who had contrib-

uted in surpassing the milestone of FY14

country budget. UTi PK crossed operang

prot budget by 7%. Compared to FY13

    budget Pakistan overachieved by 131%.

While, FY14 budget was 116% higher than

FY13. From the last year we have increased

by 105% in air volume and 34% for ocean

export volume. Air export volume exceeded

by 66% as compared to budgeted numbers.

We have been able to enhance our business

from FY13 clients by 135% in FY14 which

shows a deep trust by client in UTi PK. Our

shipment per employee rao has increased

by 39% from last year and was 9% over budg-

    eted targets.

FY14 challenged UTi in every possible way -

starng from economic condions of the

country to adverse condions of the key

market forces. UTi Pakistan held fast to the

internal iniaves and kept client centricity

approach as driving force for achieving the

teams business targets. The main focus for

FY 14 was to Deliver oncommitments to the

stakeholders and to achieve our FY14 busi-

ness plan, which was further revealed in the

    session.

Team Pakistan has successfully created and

environment for sharing and learning best

pracces among the team. Every One-Sells-

Program locally and the breakthrough move

towards SM&E specializaon into the local

market rewarded the team to surpass all

    goals.

Aer the signicant decrease of awarded sales in

2012, we assessed our local teams special capability

which could turn into compeve advantage over the

competors. The Knowledge gained over the years by

handling the globally renowned brands it was me

for a Me-2 replicaon for the local SM&E clients.

More interesngly, instead of geng engaged into

retail business more, we preferably focused on SM&E

program with the concept of catering to those 20%

clients who are contribung to 80% of the volume

and revenues instead of invesng into 80% local re-

tail market which just contributes 20% volume and

revenue but is a big chunk if you look at numbers. It

consumes much energy, me, nancial throughput

for a meager output. SM&E is our innovave idea for

PLP broad-base establishment which has it is a com-

plete win/win package through specialized designed

soluons, we nourish an ulmate long term business

relaonship which places UTi at trusted advisor-ship

    podium by the clients.

In this marvelous achievement, our SM&E clients,

Bedouin, Matrix Sourcing, Vi Sigma, OSP Group,

ADIDAS contributed around 45% to our net revenue.

Matrix Sourcing and OSP Group are our FY14 major

    businesswins.

ISC extends a variety of opportunies to the GlobalBusiness Hubs , its geographical locaon, agricul-

tural producon , shortest transit me to reach

any desnaon across the globe and availability of

    economical manpower. These capabilies and

cultural behaviors are playing key role meet the

    world needs and requirements.

UTi Global Freight Forwarding and logiscs solu-

on provider is playing an important role in ISC

region by spreading its services to other neighbor-

ing countries like Afghanistan and CIS. These arevery dicult locaons on the earth due to weather

and infrastructure, but UTi ISC Management is

pung in best eorts and using the strength of its

professional and dedicated team to provide best

service to clients. UTiISC envisions to be the most

protable Region on UTi Organogram. As employ-

ees we need to work as one team and work to our

    fullest potenal.

We atUTi Pakistan see the coming year as a store-

house of high potenal opportunies, despite thecurrent business situaon not being too sup-

porve. Our morale is high and we are all set to

achieve our targets. Our vision is set on the target

and we are ready to stretch ourselves to the maxi-

mum limit to achieve the target.

Lets begin 2014 with good hope and dedicaons.

Best Of luck to all the team members.

    Peak Season

Peak season is announced due to abnormal move-

ment of cargo during specic period.

When there is crical situaon of space on the

ights and it becomes dicult to book cargo on

early ight it is considered as Peak season at

origin. Due to space issue airfreight goes up and

somemes carriers do not entertain ad-hoc re-

quests and book the shipment on sheet rates.

There is another situaon when peak season devel-

ops but this me not because of abnormal cargo

movement from origin but heavy cargo booking for

parcular desnaon(s) during a parcular seasoni.e. Christmas, New year and Chinese new year .

Because of heavy cargo booking for parcular

desnaons during the period shipments booking

on early connecng ights is dicult and ship-

ments not only reach at desnaon late but also in

    parts .

    Special Season @ Desnaon

We take precauons during the peak season at the

origin but we do not announce any strategy for the

    situaon developed at desnaon,

What we will do when cargo does not get

    booked on early connecng ight?

What will we do when cargo roung changes

and do not get a direct ight?

As per my suggeson desnaon has to arrange

some special arrangement during special season

e.g. in USA most busy points are ORD, JFK, LUX etc.

but on the other hand IAH is less busy desnaon.

In such a scenario we should make special arrange-

ment for moving goods from IAH or any other less

busy points nearest to the nal desnaon and

advice the origin to book shipments on these less

busy airports for this parcular season. While doing

this, we should include the addional costs of

transporng goods in our quote to customer.

As you noce most of the mes customer asks for

shipment booking on express due to urgency of

goods which is an expensive soluon but if we

suggest them our special arrangement on beer

cost I believe customers will like the idea and ship-ments will arrive mely in one part and we will

have beer control on the shipments.

The Best room in the Oce is where we eat,OUR DINING ROOM.

The Dining room is the most important room

in the oce parcularly because we eat

here. The most noble jester of Sharing our

simple and tasty food with our colleagues is

pracced in the dining room .Happiness and

laughter lls the room and every one forgets

the strain and stress and enjoy the aernoon

just like being at home. Enjoyment and

nourishment are essenal for a healthy life

and it's in this room where we receive good

infusions of both. Aer all, no other room inthe oce is so closely associated with our

ve senses as the dining room is.

In addion to sasfying our stomachs, the

dining room is a place where we fulll our

social needs: U-N-I-T-Y. Talking about our

families, weekend plans holidays and some-

mes about cooking, are the many topics of

discussion which we cannot do during the

day when we work, so it's refreshing to be

able to use the dining room as a centerpiece

for coming together. At no place in the oce

does conversaon ow the way it does in thedining room while we slowly devour the

lovely meal. The room itself is a social cata-

lyst, and this fact propels it to be the number

#1 slot in the room category of our oce

The Dining Room keeps us connected with

one-another even aer we go back to our

work staon as we look forward to going

back to the best room to share our food,

happiness and to have fun .

A frail old man went to live with his son,

    daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grand-

son.The old man's hands trembled, his eye-

sight was blurred, and his step faltered.

The family ate together at the table. But the

    elderly grandfather's shaky hands and

failing sight made eang dicult. Peas rolled

o his spoon onto the oor.

When hegrasped the glass, milk spilled on the table-

cloth. The son and daughter-in-law became

    irritated with the mess.

'We must do something about father,' said

the son. 'I've had enough of his spilled milk,

noisy eang, and food on the oor.'

So the husband and wife set a small table in

the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone

while the rest of the family enjoyed din-

ner.Because Grandfather had broken a dish

or two, his food was served in a wooden

    bowl.

When the family glanced in Grandfather's

direcon, somemes he had a tear in his eye

as he sat alone.Sll, the only words the cou-

ple had for him were sharp admonions

when he dropped a fork or spilled food.

The four-year-old watched it all in si-

lence. One evening before supper, the father

noced his son playing with wood scraps on

the oor. He asked the child sweetly, 'What

are you making? Just as sweetly, the boy

responded,'Oh, I am making asmallbowl for

you and Mama to eat your food in when I

grow up.The fouryearold smiled and went

back to work. The words struck the parentsso that they were speechless. Then tears

started to stream down their cheeks. Though

no word was spoken, both knew what must

    be done.

That evening the husband took Grandfather's

hand and gently led him back to the family

table. For the remainder of his days he ate

every meal with the family. And for some

reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to

care any longer when a fork was dropped,

milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

On a posive note, I've learned that, nomaer what happens, how bad it seems to-

day, life does go on, and it will be beer to-

    morrow.

I've learned that you can tell a lot about a

person by the way he/she handles four

things:a rainy day, the elderly, lost luggage,

    and tangled Christmas tree lights.

I've learned that making a 'living' is not the

same thing as making a 'life.'

I've learned that life somemes gives you a

second chance. I've learned that you should-

n't go through life with a catcher's mi on

both hands. You need to be able to throwsomething back somemes. I've learned that

if you pursue happiness, it will elude you But,

if you focus on your family, your friends, the

needs of others, your work and doing the

very best you can, happiness will nd youI've

    learned that whenever I decideonsomething

with an open heart, I usually make the right

decision. I've learned that even when I have

pains, I don't have to be one. I've learned

that every day, you should reach out and

    touch someone.

I've learned that I sll have a lot to learn.
