The Confident Years
Why We Liked Ike• Foreign policy is a rule governing
international relations.• Dwight Eisenhower was one of
these foreign policy presidents by doing the following:
1. Helped hold together the alliance that defeated Nazi Germany.
2. Built NATO.3. Sought to be the Republican
candidate to make sure the U.S. kept its international commitments.
4. Became president by emphasizing foreign policy expertise.
"Every gun that is fired, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies a theft from those who
hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed."
•The argument he is making here is that they should not be spending the money
on military expenses. But should be spending on the American people.
Sputnik• Sputnik was the world’s
first artificial satellite launched by the USSR.
• FREAKIN OUT!!!!• Eisenhower didn’t do more
to calm the fears of the public because he did not want to reveal secret info to Russia.
Containment in Action• The U.S. accepted the existing sphere of
Communist influence but tried to block its growth.
• U.S. used government intervention in the affairs of other nations to stop Communism.
Chinese Truce• The Chinese accepted the truce in
the Korean War because Eisenhower shifted atomic bombs 400 miles away from China.
• Also the cost of the war led them to the truce.
Khrushchev• Khrushchev was the leader of the
Soviet Union. • Espionage = spies
That mole
Eisenhower’s Statement• "unpleasant reality of international
espionage" • U.S. is capable of fighting back, and
we are not easily threatened
Miscommunication • U.S. kept flying planes over in the
Soviet Union, showing our superiority.• When the Soviets stopped
complaining, the U.S. took this as their acceptance when they really were not accepting this at all.
