What an incredible year. In fact what an incredible 5 years.
It’s been 5 years since we opened the doors of Leicestershire Garden Design Company and over that time we’ve learned a lot, met some super people, won many, many awards, and built some incredible gardens.
However, nothing comes close to working with our incredible team, so I’d like to dedicate this months magazine to our team - old and new.
To celebrate a massive achievement we’ve included a special edition pull out with a collection of pictures from the first 5 years. Each picture represents something memorable to the person who provided it and I’ve got to tell you, we’ve had so much fun pulling it all together.
So enjoy the magazine, thank you to you our wonderful customers for being a part of our journey.
Here’s to 5 more incredible years.
Regards
Barry Randall

Every great garden starts somewhere
The owners of this large house in Leicestershire wanted to revamp their garden. It was crucial that the garden was levelled off and the aesthetic had to be in line with the modern vibe of the house.
The garden was originally a large grass area with some old patio. Which was great! – A fairly blank canvas for our garden designer Jeff to get stuck into and start creating a design.
Off to work they go
First of all, all the existing decking, gravel, rubble and rubbish was removed, within the footprint of the new garden design.
Preparation of groundwork and drainage for new hard standing then began. This included new perforated drainage pipes to carry away surface water from the new paving areas. A new post was put up and a rail feathered edge fencing along
the left-hand side. This was to give the garden privacy and security. Additionally, a sleeper was installed across the top of the existing sleeper walling. This was to raise the height and complete the retaining wall.
Marshall’s grey multi sandstone paving was installed to create the patio space, pathways, and seating areas.
The garden was an embarrassment
but now I can’t wait to show it off - Cotterill
It’s now highly sociable
A Tegula path was laid to create the pathways and to give a flat surface for the barbeque area. New paving was edged to create shapes in the garden, which was one of the initial criteria, to put some life into the garden.
All of the hard standing was complemented by top soil, compost filled planting areas and raised beds. Also, a really low maintenance planting scheme, which will now attract wildlife, create colour and add scent.
Another thrilled customer
As with all our landscape garden designs, we wanted to create an environment completely suited to our client’s lifestyle. This garden was transformed into the perfect, classic space for the occasional garden party.
We always start with the end in mind and every garden is built to stand the test of time. Thinking about it yourself? Great! - To start the process of transforming your garden space just call us now on 0116 214 7141

4. GARDENS & LANDSCAPES
Hey, it’s Jeff here.
With the depletion of many natural habitats, our gardens play an increasingly important role in supporting wildlife. Winter, in particular, is a time when many garden visitors could do with a little help when it comes to food and shelter.
One of the best ways to help wildlife is to replicate a natural green space and that means letting a bit of your garden go wild.
Leaf litter provides cover for slugs and insects; perfect food for birds and small mammals. Log piles will create habitats for a range of species including frogs and toads while leaving herbaceous and hollow-stemmed plants unpruned will give a home to overwintering insects.
If you can offer a wild patch of garden; a shallow dish of water at ground level; and additional food such as seed, nuts, and fruit, you’ll be helping a diverse array of species survive this winter.
I’d love to explain more about how a garden incorporate a wildlifre programme so email us:[email protected] and we’ll send you our info pack.
Regards
Jeff Randall
LIGHT UP THE SKY
‘Remember remember the fifth of November, gunpowder treason and plot. We see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be
forgot.’
Bonfire night is the anniversary of the attempt to blow up the houses of Parliament in London by Guy Fawkes.
How to celebrate...
1. Abbey Park Bonfire & Firework Display2. Twin Lakes Rock ‘n’ Roll Fireworks night 3. Throw a party:• Get some fireworks from a local retailer e.g. Tesco or The Range • Stay warm with some homemade hot chocolate. It’s really easy to
do, just meltdown some of your favourite chocolate, add some whole milk and a pinch of sugar, pour into cups and then top it off with some whipped cream and mini marshmallows.
• Purchase toffee apples! – OBVIOUSLY. • Grab some blankets and get outside… you’re all set!

Slippery decking doesn’t need to be a hazard even in the winter. All you need to know is these 6 top tips.
Clean the decking
The decking should be kept clean, especially of leaves. Fallen leaves are very slippery without the addition of ice. All obstacles should be moved. Create a clear path from the door to the exit so the time spent on the decking is reduced.
Lay down some non-slip mats
Keep an eye on the weather if snow or frost is forecast. Lay down some non-slip mats and create a path from the door to the exit.
Coat the decking
Before the winter comes, coat the decking in a non-slip paint (this should also help with paint discolouration from the snow) such as Blackfriar Anti Slip Resistant paint.
Attach chicken wire
According to ‘The Helpful Engineer’, the best method of keeping safe this Winter is to attach a layer of chicken wire to the decking.
Ice removal
Most people just boil the kettle to pour over ice or lay some salt down. However, you need to be sure that the method being used to remove the ice won’t harm your decking. Boiling water - NO NO! Use a shovel… a plastic shovel is best, so you don’t damage the decking, or use calcium chloride and rock salts.

The Joy Of Real Christmas Trees
The truth is, you’re not the only person questioning whether to buy a real Christmas tree this year. Here’s why you should go and get a fresh, real tree…
Preserve landThey preserve land that otherwise would not be. There are parts in the UK’s soil that can only grow Christmas trees. If no-one brought a real tree this land wouldn’t be in use.
RecycledThey can be recycled right back to mulch. This can be used as top soil as protection for other growing plants and vegetation.
Environmentally friendlyIt’s a more environmentally friendly choice. Artificial trees can’t be recycled after use as they contain harmful PVC materials.
Reduce our carbon footprint. They reduce our carbon footprint. Christmas trees, like all trees breathe in carbon-dioxide and breathe out fresh oxygen.
Hyper LocalismKeeping it local. Sourcing a tree from your area instead of purchasing an artificial tree that’s most likely come from China. Hyper Localism is also a big trend for 2017.
SaferThey are safer. If an artificial tree was to catch fire it would be far more toxic than a real tree.
Mental healthBetter for your mental health! It is said that people recover from stress quicker when they are in a surrounding that isn’t ‘fake’.
Why a real Christmas tree is a must have...
The Hottest Trend
They’re not that expensive either, costing from £70 - £150 for a 10ft tree. They really do bring a Christmas feel to the home.
