Exploration Obstacles

Invisible Walls:

Static Invisible Walls

Static Invisible Walls are your base invisible walls, consider them the bricks that form a house, while

there are no public methods to get through them, there are private ones; invisible walls are usually

marked by white / pink textured boxes while in game. However, these boxes can also represent area

triggers or events.

Object Based Invisible Walls

OBIWs (Object Based Invisible Wall) can be one of the easiest obstacles to overcome when exploring;

OBIWs are defined as walls that intersect through terrain objects, such as logs, rocks, and sometimes

even bridges. While these walls are technically just Static Invisible Walls, they become object based

when they intersect with an object. This usually provides an easy escape route, as most objects will

respond to pathing abilities and therefore allow the player to path through unconstrained. Examples of

this bypass can be seen here.

Pocket Invisible Walls

Pocket Invisible Walls, or sticky walls as they’re most commonly known, are the absolute bane of any

Explorer’s existence. It’s not clear for what purpose they were designed for, but sticky walls are a

collection of Static Invisible Walls arranged into an odd shape. These walls usually only exist outside of

the primary boundaries (after the first invisible wall), and are a massive killer in terms of exploration.

PIW/Sticky walls are designed to only have a one-way entry, and will trap any player inside until they

exit via means of teleportation. However, if you struggle enough a lot of the time it is possible to escape

a sticky wall, but only from the way you came. The below diagram shows how a sticky wall is usually

arranged. As it currently stands, there are no public methods to pass through a sticky wall.

Fatigue Fatigue is an effect which provides the player with a certain amount of time to exit “uncharted waters”

(sometimes land) before taking increasing damage. The easiest way to get around this is to gear yourself

out healing wise and brute force it. Alternatively, if it’s a short distance then water walking methods

may suffice.

Class Specific Abilities:

Demon Hunter

Abilities (Written by OoThe):

Double Jump: (Passive)

"You are able to jump again while near the apex of your first jump."

After activating your Double Jump ability (or when you use it manually any other

time), you will virtually gain a third jump, allowing your character a bonus in their

vertical reach. Additionally, you will glide at a slowed descent (more downward than

forward). An interesting item to note is that Glide does seem to make your character

all the slightest bit faster upon use! Neat! One negative note to make though is that

you will not be able to double jump if you manually Glide after your first jump. Also,

this ability cannot be used while on the ground, meaning that if you wish to use it for

climbing up terrain, you will need to jump upwards in place (rather than running

Page 14: The Explorer’s Handbook - Ver 7 - eVulpes.co.uk · Contents of The Explorer’s Handbook: The Explorer’s Handbook ... The Explorer’s Handbook - Ver 7.3 ... works in a similar

forward into the slope of terrain). By the way? You will always Glide in the direction

of your orientation, even when knocked back!

Infernal Strike:*

“Leap through the air toward a targeted location, dealing (316% of Attack power) Fire damage to all

enemies within 6 yards.” - Functions similar to that of a Warrior’s Heroic Leap ability.

Fel Rush:

(Instant | 10 second recharge) - "Rush forward, incinerating anything in your path..."

This ability is quite unique in its line of capability, as it is more of a projectile than a

specific movement of placing your character in a location in front of you (namely

comparatively to Heroic Leap or Blink). Because of this, Fel Rush allows Demon

Hunters to both cross distances through the air without a loss of altitude and to

accelerate a character upwards through a sloped surface. Should jumping fail to get

you to your desired location, Fel Rush almost always will be just the distance you

need. It stores up to two charges, allowing consecutive uses (but is still limited to the

global cooldown).

Glide:

(Instant | 1.5 second cooldown) - "Reduces your falling speed."

Also,

this ability cannot be used while on the ground, meaning that if you wish to use it for

climbing up terrain, you will need to jump upwards in place (rather than running

forward into the slope of terrain). By the way? You will always Glide in the direction

of your orientation, even when knocked back!

Metamorphosis:

(Instant | 5-minute cooldown | 40-yard range) - "Leap into the air and land with explosive force..."

While very similar to the Warrior's Heroic Leap ability, Metamorphosis does not let

you jump to all locations - if your target location is not connected to the one you are

on, a la instances of a Warrior's Charge, you may not be able to leap there. Even

so, whenever Glide, Double Jump, Vengeful Retreat or Fel Rush might not be

what you need, Metamorphosis might just be your golden ticket on a rainy day. It's

always good to have a backup (just don't look in the mirror)!

Vengeful Retreat:

(Instant | 25 second cooldown) - "Viciously assault nearby enemies and vault away."

While only providing a minimal amount of vertical distance for your character,

Vengeful Retreat does in fact allow you an extra inch of distance you may need

when ascending terrain. More noteworthy, however, is the distance it also helps you

cover. If for whatever reason Fel Rush does not provide what you need, perhaps this

ability will. If a surface is not slanted enough or is even concave with its edges,

Vengeful Retreat will certainly help.

*Additions to Oothe’s writeup.

Talents:

Agonizing Flames:

“Immolation Aura increases your movement speed by 30%, and deals 20% increased damage.” – Base

movement speed increase of 30% while Immolation Aura is present.

Prepared:

“Reduces the cooldown of Vengeful Retreat by 10 sec, and generates 100 Fury over 10 sec if you

damage at least one enemy with Vengeful Retreat.” – As the description states, reduces the cooldown

on your Vengeful Retreat by 10 seconds.

Nertherwalk:

“Slip into the nether, increasing movement speed by 100% and becoming immune to damage, but

unable to attack. Lasts 5 sec.” – Base movement speed increase of 100%. Also grants damage immunity.

Page 16: The Explorer’s Handbook - Ver 7 - eVulpes.co.uk · Contents of The Explorer’s Handbook: The Explorer’s Handbook ... The Explorer’s Handbook - Ver 7.3 ... works in a similar

Druid:

Talents:

Balance Affinity:

“You gain: Astral Influence - Increases the range of all of your abilities by 5 yards. You also learn:

Moonkin Form, Starsurge, Lunar Strike, Solar Wrath, Sunfire.” – The main highlight of this is that other

specializations can use Wild Charge’s disengage variant, and Flap while in Moonkin form.

Displacer Beast:

“Teleports you up to 20 yards forward, activating Cat Form and increasing your movement speed by 50%

for 2 sec.” – Almost identical to a Mage’s blink spell; can be used to teleport through objects / object

based walls but also gives you a 50% base movement speed increase.

Feral Affinity:

“Feline Swiftness: Increases your movement speed by 15%.” – As the description states, increases your

base movement by 15%. Combining this with Dash makes for very fast Druid!

Force of Nature:

“Summons a stand of 3 Treants for 10 secs […] in the targeted area.” – An extremely helpful talent;

these Treants can be placed on the other side an invisible wall and flown to using Wild Charge through

object based walls. In addition, this spell can also be used to place Treants on top of a mountain and fly

to them almost immediately which ultimately makes wallclimbing trivial.

Guttural Roars:

“Increases the radius of Stampeding Roar by 200%, the radius of Incapacitating Roar by 100%, and

reduces the cooldown of Stampeding Roar by 50%.”

Wild Charge:

“Grants a movement ability that varies by shapeshift form:”

• Aquatic Form:

"Increases swim speed by an additional 150% for 5 sec.” – Useful in beating the Fatigue meter.

• Bear Form:

“Charge to an enemy, immobilizing them for 4 sec.” – This is affected by Line of Sight.

• Cat Form:

“Leap behind an enemy, dazing them for 3 sec.” – Like the Bear Form variant, this is also

affected by Line of Sight.

• Mookin Form:

“Bound backward.” – This spell functions in the same manner as a Hunter’s disengage, so can be

used to cross long distances with ease. Also affected by slowfall effects, such as flap.

• Non-shapeshifted:

“Fly to an ally’s position.’ – This version is useful in that is it not affected by pathing like spells

such as intercept and charge are.

Page 17: The Explorer’s Handbook - Ver 7 - eVulpes.co.uk · Contents of The Explorer’s Handbook: The Explorer’s Handbook ... The Explorer’s Handbook - Ver 7.3 ... works in a similar

• Travel Form:

“Leap forward 20 yds.” – Useful for wallclimbing; no longer functions through object based

walls.

Abilities:

Cat Form:

“Shapeshift into Cat Form, increasing movement speed by 30%, granting protection from Polymorph

effects, and reducing falling damage. The act of shapeshifting frees you from movement impairing

effects.” – Activated Cat Form, unlocking additional abilities but also increasing your base speed by 30%.

Dash:

“Activates Cat Form and increases movement speed by 70% while in Cat Form for 15 sec.” – While the

tooltip states 70%, Dash is a minimum of a 100% total speed increase due to the passive speed increase

from Cat Form; not only does Dash stack with Cat Form, but also Feline Swiftness.

Dreamwalk:

“Teleports the caster to the Emerald Dreamway.” – This spell will also teleport the caster back to the

nearest graveyard from where they casted Dreamwalk originally, if casted a second time.

Flap:

“You descend on starry dust, slowing your falling speed.” – Serves as a slowfall for both Balance Druids

and other specializations with Balance Affinity.

Feline Swiftness:

“Increases your moment speed by 15%.” – Base speed increase of 15%; stacks with other increases.

Prowl:

“Activates Cat Form and places you into stealth until cancelled.” – Useful in avoiding enemies.

Revive, and Rebirth:

“Returns the spirit to the body, restoring a dead target to life with 35% of maximum health and mana.

Not castable in combat.” – Single target resurrection.

“Returns the spirit to the body, restoring a dead target to life with 60% health and 20% mana. Castable

in combat. Usable in all shapeshift forms.” – Single target resurrection with an instant cast.

Revitalize:

“Returns all dead party members to life with 35% of maximum health and mana. Not castable in

combat.” – Group target resurrection with no requirements for Line of Sight.

Stag Form:

“Shapeshift into a mountable stag form, increasing movement speed by 40%. Also protects the caster

from Polymorph effects. Only usable outdoors. The act of shapeshifting frees the caster of movement

impairing effects.” – This spell also functions as a multi-passenger mount.

Stampeding Roar:

“Lets loose a wild roar, increasing the movement speed of all friendly players within 10 yards by 60% for

8 sec.” – Base movement speed increase of 60% for both yourself and nearby friends.

Useful Mounts for Exploration:

“Chopper” Mounts: Chopper mounts are the kings of beneficial exploration mounts. Most, if not all, “Chopper” mounts can

jump while standing still, meaning they can be used at 100% speed to wallclimb. In addition, some of

them have the bonus of being multi-passenger, meaning you could bring a friend!

• Champion’s Treadblade / Warlord’s Deathwheel:

Can be purchased from Paulie for 100,000g / a reward from the achievement “Warlord’s

Deathwheel”.

• Chauffeured Chopper:

Provided as a reward for the achievement “Heirloom Hoarder”. While it is not a multi-passenger

mount, it can be used at any level.

• Mechano Hog / Mekigneer’s Chopper:

Can be purchased on the Auction House or created via an Engineer, has the bonus of being a

multi-passenger mount.

Large Mounts: Large sized mounts such as Grand Black War Mammoth increase your size significantly, allowing for

ceiling clipping. While there are numerous large-scale mounts, Mammoths appear to be more beneficial

as they allow for passengers, who are not affected by their hitbox size.

Common Exploration Techniques:

Client Frame Lag: Client Frame Lag can be instigated to delay, or continue, the effects of a spell. For example, if a Druid

uses Wild Charge (Moonkin Form) and instigates 15 seconds of Client Frame Lag during the Wild Charge,

he can force the game to hold him in position for the duration of the Wild Charge cooldown which in

turn allows the Druid to instantly cast it again. Methods such as this can be used to effectively “fly” up to

an obstacle, or across a gap. The below macro can cause Client Frame Lag (change the X character to the

required number of seconds):

/run local t = time() +X while time() <t do end

Extreme Speed: Extreme Speed is one of the oldest techniques and has been used throughout every expansion. By

combining various items, toys, spells, and armor, almost anyone can achieve a very high movement

speed allow them to cross gaps very quickly. A prime example of this is combining Rocket Boots Xtreme

with a Filled Festive Mug. While client Frame Lag may be more reliable than using Extreme Speed, it is

not as quick.

Clipping Through Walls & Ceilings: Another technique that’s been around for quite a long time, clipping through walls and ceilings allows a

player with a significant size increase to pass unconstrained through ceilings. The current working

method requires the player to use a size increase, such as a mount or an Elixir of Giant Growth, and then

to log out (alt + F4 just before the mount cast finishes, if using a mount). Upon logging back in, the

player will be able to jump through the ceiling, and over the wall.

Unknown Zone Teleportation Dying in an unknown zone will teleport you to your “default” faction Graveyard, regardless of continent.

For Alliance, this is Westfall, and for Horde it’s the Northern Barrens.

Exploring with Offline Mode: Offline Mode allows a player to walk around the world of Azeroth without taking any form of damage; in

Offline Mode, there is no way to dismount, mount, die, communicate with, or see, other players. There

is no current working method to activate Offline, but for educational purposes a previous method can

be seen here.

Using Client-Side Lag to Explore: Using client-side lag to explore is a new method that simplifies both exploration via travelling and wall

climbing; the theory behind it is that you cause your client to freeze in order tonullify the cooldowns of

certain spells. For example, a Demon Hunter can use Fel Rush twice, cause some client-side lag for the

duration of the cooldown, and the proceed to use Fel Rush again, without their character moving at all.

This allows for the Demon Hunter to endlessly scale up a wall, or dash across a large open crevice

without falling. There are a few methods to cause client-side lag, but the simplest ones are macros, one

example is listed below:

/run local t = time() +10 while time() <t do end

Page 23: The Explorer’s Handbook - Ver 7 - eVulpes.co.uk · Contents of The Explorer’s Handbook: The Explorer’s Handbook ... The Explorer’s Handbook - Ver 7.3 ... works in a similar

The duration of the lag can be changed by changing the number “10” to however long you would like to

lag (in seconds)

Extreme Speed: Combining speed increasing items, such as the Rocket Boots Xtreme, and the Filled Festive Mug can

result in a very fast-moving player with a long lasting, re-applicable, slowfall. If you do not have a Filled

Festive Mug, another form of slowfall can be used such as the Noggenfoger Elixir.
