Title: Tolerance
Background:
An open message to parents on the concept of tolerance.
Problems:
-- Hate of other people, religion, sexuality.
-- Most of them come from parents and teachers.
Objectives:
-- To create awareness of teaching tolerance to children.
-- To show what happen if there is zero tolerance in the future.
-- To teach people about tolerance
Idealization & Concept:
Create an audio visual that include motion graphic, video and typography.
Target Audience:
-- Adult (Parents)
Motivation:
I got the topic after watching a video clip shown by my lecturer, Kok Yoong during the DM's
class. It's a video about a handicap person sharing her story of being a handicap to her
audience.
During her talk, she said;
"...they only learn to be frighten...when an adult influences them to behave that way."
I 100% agreed with her. Children looked up at adults and learn from adult. Children need to
learn how love one another, to respect one another and not to expose their mind with hatred.
Online research:
Children, in particular, may have difficulty channeling their feelings appropriately and can
easily pick up negative or demeaning cues given by adults around them. Meanwhile in
schools, some students may become targets of hostility and blame. Bullying and harassment
are never acceptable but they can be especially damaging when certain students or segments
of society feel especially vulnerable. Parents and school personnel need to be prepared to
quickly and effectively prevent and intervene in the presence of abusive behaviors toward
any students. Such behaviors can only further contribute to the risk of violence in schools and
communities.
Key Messages:
1) Violence and hate are never solutions to anger.
2) Groups of people should not be judged by the actions of a few.
3) All people deserve to be treated with fairness, respect and dignity.
4) We are in this together.
5) We need to work for peace in our communities and around the world.
6) Tolerance is a lifelong endeavor.

How Tolerance in my installation:
By using a projection mapping style of installation art.
What is projection mapping:
A method of representing the surface of a three-dimensional. Map projections are necessary
for creating maps. All map projections distort the surface in some fashion. Depending on the
purpose of the map, some distortions are acceptable and others are not; therefore different
map projections exist in order to preserve some properties of the sphere-like body at the
expense of other properties. There is no limit to the number of possible map projections.
Why projection mapping:
There’s already a lot of PSA videos or even documentaries on tolerance on TV or on the net.
But none them receive a full attentions. Since projection mapping can easily attract audience
with amazing spectacular visuals and projections on full building, I try presenting my own
version of PSA using visual effects but projected on a smaller scale building.
Software Studies:
VDMX is a software based, media processing
environment that lets you achieve stunning
effects in real time. Problem is that this software
only can be supported by Mac.
Adobe AfterFX is for creating the visual part of
my installation. With a few downloadable plug-
ins, cool interesting effects can be made.
For my installation art I tend to create an audio/visual installation that will help
promoting tolerance to children by using a projection mapping style of installation art. The
installation will play with a few emotions when viewers view it. Showing how sad and
depressing the world will be if people still continue to pay very less attentions on the topic;
tolerance.
Tolerance PSA ‘Dear Parents’:
Got my inspiration by watching this interesting PSA about promoting
tolerance to children. This video is about delivering an open message to
parents on the concept of tolerance.
Precedence Studies:
A Tale of Tolerance:
Another interesting video that caught my eye is this short motion graphic
video on Tolerance. This video tells a story about the birth of Intolerance in
the Realm of Man and the reemergence of Tolerance as a step to reuniting
Humanity.

Sounds:
What kind of sound should I use for my installation?
Since my installation art is more towards sentimental issue, I’m thinking of using sounds that
represents sadness / depression / hurt. For the background music, slow music or intensive
music shall be looping in the background. By the meaning of slow music, I don’t mean using
slow love songs and the meaning of intensive music, I don’t mean using suspense or action or
even epic choir type of songs.
Sound effects will be use if necessary. Depends on the animation of the visual shown.
The subject matter
for my installation is a
miniature model of a
kindergarten school, since it
is about children. The model
I created it from scratch. Not
basing it from any actual
building. Kind of got the idea
of creating the miniature
building by going for the old
American style church like
kindergarten.
