1.What is T.H.E.? Message from the
committee?
Treasure Hunt Europe is one of Sheffield RAGs biggest and most
successful events. It is a WORLD RECORD trans-european treasure
hunt organized and run by students at Sheffield University aiming to
raise money for local and International charities. Leaving from
Brussels on the 13th of June 2011 each team (3-5 members) will race
to the finish (about 3,000 kilometres away) following cryptic clues to
the next location on a route spanning at least 4 countries. The team
to reach the final destination first will be the grand winners of 1,000
in cash.
Sheffield RAG are passionate about putting the money they raise back
in to the local community, and as such have made the commitment that
85% of the money raised will go to groups working in South Yorkshire
/ North Derbyshire. Although national charities are welcome to apply,
the priority for RAG will continue to be local organisations. For
example, RAG last year donated 22,000 to Cavendish Cancer Care to
support the terrific work they do. By spreading the positive impact
RAG have on the Sheffield community; we hope your friends and familywill be more generous in their donations.
To generate this money we require each participant to raise a
minimum of 260 sponsorship. Through this method we hope the
event this year can raise upwards of 16,000! However raising this
money is by no means an easy feat and in recent years, as the
public have tightened their financial belts, students have found it
increasingly harder to raise their sponsorship. In the following
pages you can see an overview of the charities that THE will be
supporting this year and fundraising opportunities for you to get
involved it.

2.THECHARITIESBelow is the list of the confirmed
charities for Bummit 2011. Whilst
these figures have not yet been

Charities for T.H.E. 2011
The Exodus ProjectThe Exodus Project runs activity clubs in Barnsley, specifically targeting
disadvantaged communities. It currently runs clubs for children aged 8 -11, and
separate clubs for older youths aged 11-15. The charity aims to build trusting and
lasting relationships with the young people who attend to divert them from
destructive lifestyles and help them realise their true potential. All those
attending, as well as having great fun, learn the importance of respecting others
and working as a team. The Exodus Projects visiting teams see the children
weekly at their homes, to build relationships and liaise with parents and carers.
It also offers day trips and activity week-ends for the young people, to give them a
break from the pressures of home and school.
Autism Plus
Autism Plus is a local South Yorkshire charity that provides support for people
with autistic spectrum disorders, learning disabilities and mental health
difficulties. Many of their service users require a lot of support with their day -to-
day activities for example getting on a bus, personal hygiene or cooking a simplemeal. Autism Plus teaches them independent living skills, helps them into
employment or into volunteering opportunities and to achieve their dreams and
aspirations e.g. going to college or going on holiday with friends for the first time.
Its services include residential and supported living, domiciliary care, respite,
day service provision, adult learning opportunities, and community outreach.
They also provide extra activities and facilities for their service users, including
the drama group which they currently require funding for.

Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre (South Yorkshire)
The Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre is a small, local charity that was
established in 1985 to provide a range of non-intrusive, drug-free, symptom

Sclerosis (MS) and other neurological conditions. Such therapies include

between 10am and 4pm to collect a bucket and head across to the
Train Station or to Fargate (between Boots and Republic in Town)
depending on the day and permit.Past experience has taught us
that the more effort you make with your costume the more
donations you are likely to receive. However, if fancy dress is not
for you, just remember to try to be as friendly/charming as possibleto entice people to donate. The advantage of being positioned in
the main shopping area is that many people tend to have spare
change from their previous purchase.
Useful Phrases
any spare change? every penny counts! local Sheffield
charitiesSpare a penny for Sheffield RAG8
5% of your moneygoes towards local charities!
Remember to keep the phrase simple. Pedestrians dont have time
to be lectured about the charities thus it is ideal to use short sharp
sentences that instantly catch their attention. Place emphasis on
the fact that RAG donates to local causes as people are always
more willing to help their hometown!
Tip: it is worth learning what charities you are raising money for,
some people may ask!
Shaking collection buckets is NOT permitted but raising your voice
in an enthusiastic manner can only ever be a good thing!
You must remember to bring your bucket back to the Zone before
5:30pm on the same day. We will count it for you and send you an
email revealing the grand total. Once you know how much you have
raised update your Justgiving page by editing the Offline donations!

5.Sponsorship Etiquette
DO
y Be confident if you pluck up the courage to ask for yoursponsorship, the 260 you need will be much easier to raise if you
ask as many people as possible
y Get your facts ready Many people you ask will simply think theyare contributing to you having a holiday, and while T.H.E. is a
great week for all involved, make sure you stress the importance
that any money raised through sponsorship does not aid you in
any way. Explain that the minimum 260 that you have pledgedautomatically goes straight to all the deserving chosen charities
picked out this year.
y Know what charities are involved - Have a list of all the chosencharities to hand with details on how the huge amounts of money
raised by T.H.E and RAG will be spent. Specific information about
the fundraising will definitely aid you in gaining more
sponsorship.
y Stay upbeat and dont forget to SMILE If you act keen and excitedabout the event your potential donator will be more likely to hand
over their cash and pass on the T.H.E message to others.
y Use your initiative- You can raise money in many different ways!See Section 6 for more ideas
DONT
y Pressure a potential sponsor If they say no, dont worry. Therewill always be more people to ask, or ask them to pass your
sponsor form to others.
-

10/13
y Assume that your sponsorship will magically appear over night!-be active, and take up opportunities that we organise.
To Conclude -
y Be keen to raise you money; the sooner you start the easier it willinevitably be.
y Come along to all the RAG raids and other sponsorship events ifyou are struggling.
y Ask as many people as you cany Produce a brilliant, colourful and informative sponsor form.y Tell people that even though T.H.E. is a big event and you will have
a brilliant time its a million times harder than a sponsored swim
or walk and people are always keen to sponsor individuals for
those so why not T.H.E?
GOOD LUCK
