MISSISSAUGA MARATHON
On Saturday evening the 10km run began at the PC Legion and took runners along a visually stunning route along Lake Ontario finishing at Lakefront Promenade Park. Although the weather was quiet dreary it did not affect the positive energy of the participants and spectators alike. The Half and Full Marathon on Sunday did not see the weather improve for the 8,000 participations. Congratulations to all the runners who reached their personal goals!

OUTDOORLANDSCAPINGEven if you aren't planning to sell your home, think for the future with landscaping improvements that will add valuable curb appeal. Planting a tree will not only make your home more visually desirable but it can also help to save energy. Choose a leaf shedding tree that will provide shade from the summer sun, but will let light in during the winter months to maximize solar warmth and light.
HOME TECHTechnology is not just for smartphones anymore. Homebuyers are increasingly interested in smart homes with elements that will make their lives easier. The new Hunter Douglas PowerView motorized operating system lets you customize the perfect combination of light, privacy and warming, keeping your home perfectly in sync with the time of day and your mood. The PowerView Pebble Remote allows you to control exactly how light will play throughout your home from the palm of your hand.

COMPOSITEor Wood?
Myth-busting facts about Composite Decking
outdoors
As temperatures warm, many homeowners will begin thinking about home improve-ment. Adding a deck or replacing an old one is a popular project in spring and
summer - one that provides outdoor entertaining space and enhances home value. If you’re considering a deck project this season, will you choose to build with wood or composite?
In many ways, composite decking is far more eco-friendly than wood. When you consider the life cycle of both products, composite products such as Fiberon for example, emerge as materials with minimal environmental impact. Composite production processes require less energy and water, create fewer emissions and make use of recycled materials. Because Fiberon purchases most materials from sources within 500 miles of the production plant, less energy is consumed transporting materials. Your final, finished deck requires no harsh chemical treatments to make it resist rot and stain, and it will last for decades. That durability means less energy consumption, fewer resources needed to replace it and less discarded material in landfills.
TRUTH:
Myth: Wood is “greener” than composite decking.
Like any new technology, composite decking has evolved from its basic beginnings. Today’s composite deck material comes in an array of colours and textures that are fade resistant. Wood is undeniably beautiful, and many composite decking options now mimic the natural grain and beauty of wood. Whether your taste runs to classic or contemporary, you’ll find composite selections that deliver the look of traditional wood grains and even exotic hardwoods. Advances in composite technology have yielded products that so closely resemble wood, you may not be able to tell the difference until you step on one barefoot - you’ll find the composite smooth and splinter-free! →
TRUTH:
Myth: Composite fades, looks fake and doesn’t have wood’s beauty.

Composite decking offers vast design flexibility, just like wood. Whether your dream deck involves multiple tiers and multi-function spaces, customized railings, built-in seating or an outdoor kitchen, you can achieve it with composite decking.
FINALLY, if you’re still unsure about composite
decking, consider this: a composite deck will return
about 74 percent of its construction cost when you sell
your home, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost
vs. Value Report. Until then, your low-maintenance
composite deck will provide decades of worry-free
enjoyment to your family. THN

TRUTH:
Myth: You can’t make custom designs with composite decking.
If your DIY skills are up to working with wood, you can definitely build your own deck using composite materials. In fact, composite products are easier to work with than wood in many ways. Unlike wood, composite planks won’t splinter or fracture. Finally, when your deck is done, you can start enjoying it right away, without the need to stain or seal the deck before you can use it.
TRUTH:
Myth: Wood is a better material for do-it-yourself decks.
While the initial outlay for materials may be the same as exotic woods or more than pressure treated wood, the durability, longevity and low-maintenance requirements of composite mean it will actually cost less over its lifetime than wood. Composite eliminates the cost of re-staining a deck every year, and its rot-resistant qualities greatly curtail repair costs.
TRUTH:
Myth: Composite decking is too expensive.

April was another great month for the students at Streetsville Sec-ondary School. The school’s rugby season finally kicked off and the Senior Boys won their most recent game 29-13. The Junior Girls also placed 3rd out of 8 teams at their tournament at Sheridan College. Way to go Tigers!
In early April, Canadian author Eric Walters came to speak about the art of writing to English classes and members of the White Pine Read-ing Club. Walters, who has written over 90 young adult novels, shared with students what the life of an author is like and what inspires him.
The Interact Club was busy planning their first charity garage sale, which took place on April 30th. All proceeds went towards helping in-digenous women in crisis. Donations were accepted and, along with the sale of many great items, the Saturday morning featured kids’ activities and a number of Streetsville Rotarians serving a pancake breakfast for members of the community to enjoy.
As the school year is quickly coming to an end, students were able to take their minds off of any stress with the dodge ball activity night. Teams went head to head in a round robin and eventually one team came out on top as the winner. The night was filled with lots of fun and excitement!
Part two of the Internet Safety series will be taking place on May 12th at 7pm and will feature Key Note speaker Dr. Karris del Rosario, who is back by popular demand after speaking to a packed house last year about helping our children deal with stress. All are welcome and the event is free. We do ask that students under the age of 16 not come due to the sensitive nature of the material covered.
At the end of May, the school will be having its annual anti-bullying awareness Pink Week, which will involve a different spirit day every day of the week. The week will end off with a barbecue, featuring live music.
For further information please contact the school at 905 826 1195, visit the school website www.streetsvillesecondary.com, or follow us on Twitter @StreetsvilleSS.
