Howard Fitch* New Member Speech Day
The Clubʼs Newest MembersIntroductions*Howard Fitch was a member for only about three and a half years before his sudden and untimely death in September, 2012. Always friendly and joking, he is most remembered for “shepherding” the new members through to their Blue Badges. He coined the phrase “Living Obituaries” for these new member speeches.

The entrée was provided by our friends at Maggiano's. And our great RMH commit-tee chair, Jina McDaniel, brought her mother, Tina, to check things out. And Fred Speno brought his daughter and son-in-law too. Family fun doing good for others!!
DGE Rick Amsberry sent the fol-lowing from San Diego where he is attending District Governorʼs train-ing, “The theme for our next Rotary year is ʻRotary: Making a Difference.ʼ
You and I are Rotary; we are the ones who make a difference. Then, as a collective whole, Rotary as an organization makes a huge impact. CNBC recently ranked Rotary Inter-national as the 3rd most effective charity in the world in terms of impact That's you and me - we are Rotary!

President Tracy Gomes called the meeting to order. Stan Carr gave the invocation and noted that Shawn Fos-ter's mother was starting treat-ment for breast cancer. Please
keep her in your prayers. Jane Golden led the Pledge of Allegiance and The Star Spang-led Banner. Mark Kashar introduced our vis-itors and guests, including a visiting Rotarian from Big Spring who has moved to Dallas. Shawn Foster introduced our Marketplace Advertiser of the week. PP Eric Heitkamp introduced our newest member Paul McFar-
thers Big Sisters Lone Star. He began by say-ing that he was the grandson of President George H. W. Bush and nephew of President George W. Bush, and that his grandfather was his hero. He sees his grandfather as a model of service, and that his "Thousand Points of Light" was a model for people getting involved in service. He said he spends his days with stories of selflessness. His original goal was to help kids go to college. Young people who are raised in one-parent homes are much less likely to go to a two or four year college. He quoted Ben Bernanke that a meritorious sys-tem benefits those who have the best paren-tal support and the best education, and the way for it to work is for the meritorious to work hard and share with others. Mentoring is a powerful way to invest in the life of another person. He said that programs do not change lives, relationships change lives. It is a two-way street, and the mentors usually feel like they have gotten the most out of it. He said his first mentee was six years old, and he act-ed just like every other six year old, and he asked all kinds of questions. He wanted some-one to talk to and to spend time with. He quo-ted President Obama that change only hap-pens when ordinary people get involved. He has seen mentors help kids overcome incredi-ble odds. Adolescents who live in chaotic sur-roundings need people to help them make bet-ter decisions. The program that RCPC and Big Brothers Big Sisters started at Hillcrest H. S. has become a nation-wide model. This the fifth year of the program, so they have seen the first class graduate. Eighty-nine percent of those students are enrolled in a two or four year college. RCPC started a school-based program at Hillcrest. BBBS provides training and staff to help and support along the way. They are developing a 2.0 program which will be web-based to make it easier for mentors and mentees to be in touch.

THOUGHTS ON . . .
Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one. ~ Jane HowardIn a networked world, trust is the most important currency.
~ Eric SchmidtAll men are caught in an inescapa-ble network of mutuality.
~ Martin Luther King Jr.We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects.
~ Herman MelvilleEverything is connected... no one thing can change by itself.

Old John owned a small ranch. The State Wage Department claimed he was not paying pro-per wages and sent an agent out to interview him.
“I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,” demanded the agent. “Well,” replied old John, :My ranch hand has been with me for 3 years. I pay him $600 a week plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $500 a week plus free room and board. Then there's the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of

the work here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night.”“That's the guy I want to talk to, the half-wit,” said the agent. ”That would be me,” replied old rancher John.
