Purim is not just costumes and cookies
According to the book of Esther, Purim is a time for “feasting and joy and giving presents of food to one another and gifts to the poor.” (Esther 9:22). At CRC it’s a holiday filled with time together, abundant laughter and noise, and opportunities to greet our community with sweetness.
This year in addition to events and services to read and act out the Megillah, we’re organizing a Shalach Manot Exchange.
How does this work?1. Sign up to participate by Friday, February 16. (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JTZXGJ6 )2. You will be contacted by Friday, February 16 about the CRC member household to which you will deliver a basket. We’ll give you the household’s address, contact information, and any dietary restrictions. (We will try to match households located near each other.)3. Prepare and deliver two gifts between Friday, February 23 and Wednesday March 1. 1. Friendship basket or bag – deliver to your assigned household. It’s not about spending money! Please don’t spend more than $20-25, and it’s fine to spend less! 2. Tzedakah gift – deliver non-perishable food items to CRC or directly to the Jewish Food Pantry (or another food bank).4. You will also receive a basket between Friday, February 23 and Wednesday March 1, and hopefully meet a new friend, or connect with a current one! What should I put in my gift basket or bag?The only real guideline is that your gift should include at least two different foods. Here are some ideas: • Hamantaschen (Purim cookies are available at local grocery stores; or a recipe of your own!) • Crackers, cookies or brownies • Candy • Grape juice, wine or coffee • Card, notes or kids’ crafts
Remember – the mitzvah is the giving, not the spending – so we can be creative and have fun!

Shanda, There is None1:00 - 2:30 pm at CRC
This is our mental health-mental illness open promgram meeting on the first Sunday of every month. These sessions are an opening bcause we are at square one on this subject. We are turning our attention to the next hurdle of service which is mental illness.
Shanda means shame. There is none.
We are under-prepared, under-educated, under-equipped. We are still laboring under the shanda curtain of shame. We all have the experience in our families, among our friends, some of us more hidden than others. We begin by talking about it; let’s talk about mental illness.
Our sessions are divided up into a strategizing, a teaching, a sharing, and a ritual all designed to develop tools to strengthen inner life.
Yiddish Opklayb or How To Learn Yiddish Without Learning Yiddish(Taught by Will Soll) 7:00 - 8:30 pm at CRC
In the February University series, Will Soll offers Yiddish Opklayb (Yiddish Potpourri) and describes it thus: "We're not going to learn Yiddish, we're just going to introduce a few words, tell some jokes, hear a little bit about Yiddish culture and personalities, and sing a song or two. And by the time we're done, you'll have learned some Yiddish!" Classes meet from 7 to 8:30. (There will be an additional session right before-hand, from 6:30 to 7, for those who want to do a little advance preparation, learn the Yiddish alphabet, and work through the first two units of Lily Kahn's Colloquial Yiddish. This group will meet in the Adult Education room adjacent to the library).
*Note: This class will meet Feb 6, Feb 13, Feb 27 and March 6. There will be no class on Februrary 20; instead, you are encouraged to head down to the Sheldon Concert Hall to hear Will's program "Remembering America."
Will Soll at the Sheldon: Remembering AmericaWill's solo program is a cavalcade of American popular music before 1953, the year he was born. It showcases the broad, multi-layered musical heritage of the United States: show tunes, blues, Stephen Foster, cowboy songs, jazz standards, Leadbelly, Yiddish song, R&B, John Philip Sousa, Civil War songs, Billie Holliday, sweatshop laments, spirituals, sea shanties, Scott Joplin, and more. The songs are by turns upbeat, quaint, wistful, funny, sad, noble; they embody American dreams and realities, joys and sorrows, flaws and ideals.
The Sheldon is located at 3648 Washington Blvd 63108. Admission is $10 at the door.

University Series coming this MarchYoga of Activism / Social JusticeTaught by Andy Nunberg
Social Justice work seeks to integrate all members of society, resulting in a cohesive wholeness, where everyone is honored and valued. Yoga is a spiritual tradition that seeks to integrate all the different aspects of one's existence to form an integrity that is unparalleled. We will take a look at the spiritual tradition of yoga to see if it can inform Tikun Olam, Social Justice and Activ-ism.

Awaken ShabbatFriday, February 9, 7:30 pm during Kabbalat ShabbatIn honor of Tu B'Shevat and the imminent arrival of spring, CRC member Karen Flotte will speak about the mission of the CRC Mitzvah Garden. Last year CRC donated over 500 pounds of fresh produce grown in the Mitzvah Garden to the Trinity Food Pantry at Trinity Episcopal Church, one of our fellow Holy Ground Collaborative congregations. Barbi Click, director of the Trinity Food Ministry, will join Karen to speak about the work of the Food Ministry and the Food Pantry. Come learn about these wonderful efforts in our community and how you can get involved!
Awaken Shabbat on March 9For the Sake of All is an initiative to improve the health and well-being of African-Americans in St. Louis, and the region as a whole, by eliminating racial inequalities. The 2014 study identified key areas where we can have the greatest impact: economic opportunity, early childhood education, school-based health, quality neighborhoods, and health care access. At our Awaken Shabbat on March 9, Faith & For the Sake of All Liaisons Alyssa Banford and Elizabeth Hines will share research findings and ways we can make a difference.
One of my favorite memories from childhood was spending Shabbat with my classmates and teachers, building community, having fun, eating, and learning through interactive activities. I was so excited that we implemented our First Annual CRC Shabbat Lock-In for our 5th and 6th graders in mid-January. Over 30 participants celebrated Shabbat together in a camp-like atmosphere participating in activities around the theme of “tikkun olam,” repairing the world. Highlights of the Lock-In included Shabbat dinner, learning about Maimonides, role playing stories that interpreted tikkun olam and gemilut chasadim (acts of loving kindness), and Rabbi Randy's team building activities.
The feedback was fabulous. As we concluded the Shabbat Lock-In, parents joined us for a closing circle where each participant shared a highlight. The participants enjoyed making new friends, spending Shabbat with their CRC friends outside of the classroom, sleeping at CRC, and the food. For the staff, the real highlight was to see how much they loved being together at CRC and participating in the activities with excitement and energy, even after only a few hours of sleep.
We hope this is the beginning of a new tradition at CRC and that our students will look forward to sharing future Shabbat experiences through informal education and fun.- Morah Maxine

By engaging in a Mussar practice we learn to consider our actions, plumb our motives, and stare intently at the reflection we cast on the world. As we learn and practice we become more skillful parents, more attentive partners and more in tune with who we want to be. Offered by The Mussar Institute (TMI) and facilitated by CRC member Felice Joyce, a TMI trained Mussar Va'ad Facilitator who has been studying and practicing Mussar for 10 years. The class will cover 4 Middot (Character traits): humility, patience, forgiveness and simplicity. The class fee is $136. No prior knowledge is required.
