Population growth continues to put unprecedented pressure
on natural resources in cities everywhere.WHAT WE DO NOW:
Help Connecticut’s urban communities utilize natural assets
and services to build their resilience to escalating c hallenges.
A NATIONAL MODEL FOR RESILIENT CITIES. The Connecticut Chapter
is part of a precedent-setting initiative from The Nature
Conservancy that is being piloted nationally in 13 municipalities, including Bridgeport, where residents are vulnerable to the
effects of extreme weather. From creating more green space
that provides flood protection to restoring tree canopies
that offset the impact of heat waves, the Bridgeport initiative
is poised to become a model for smaller cities locally
and nationally.
Helping Cities Survive Climate Change
COMMUNITY PARTNERS
WE HAVE WORKED WITH CITY OFFICIALS, community leadersand

Rivers sustain life, with flow patterns that orchestrate the
rhythm of nature’s life cycles. WHAT WE DO NOW: Restore
river health by reconnecting streams, rebuilding habitats, and
improving dam management so waters run freely.
RIVER RESTORATION. Working with the Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission and others, we’re playing a pivotal role in relicensing
five hydropower projects along 150 miles of the ConnecticutRiver — making science-based recommendations that revitalize
the river and balance its many uses.
FLOODPLAIN RESTORATION. Floodplains harbor diverse species
and absorb floodwaters, which protect stream health and
property. With our first-of-its-kind research, we’re looking
to restore floodplain forests along the Connecticut
River, including the reintroduction of more than
2,000 disease-tolerant American elm trees.
