Urban Green Lab Improving well-being by sustainable living.
By Christine Ko NAZA Pulse Adviser
This week, Scholars were treated to a visit from one of Nashville’s newest
non-profit organizations, the Urban Green Lab. They are the only non-profit
that is dedicated to “improving the health and well-being of our city through
sustainability.” They work with groups of all ages to educate and inspire
more Nashvillians to incorporate lasting environmental habits into their lives.
In the mobile lab students were able to create their own Green Passport that
included different “stops” throughout the lab. These stops ranged from
looking at where our breakfast food comes from, to how much water we
use, to which lightbulbs will save you the most money. Students were able to
learn the differences between composting, recycling, and trash as well as
some of the reasons that Nashville flooded in 2010.
The day ended with a discussion on easy steps that Scholars can take to be
more sustainable in their lifestyles. Remember that this is OUR planet and
we need to take care of it!

Field Trip to MTSU Experiencing true BLUE.
By Hiwot Demelash NAZA Pulse Correspondent
The Nashville Scholars went to Middle Tennessee State University on Tuesday. A lot of students here have visited college
campuses before but it was a first for me. The campus was filled with large, appealing buildings that had something for
everyone. They had so much there that it seemed like they had the potential to offer a variety of options to many different
types of people. The university was rich with history and culture. I wouldn’t be alone while saying I can see myself going to
this college-and I’m not just saying that because they have a Starbucks, a Panda Express, a Steak and Shake, Chick-Fil-A, and
many more restaurants.
Though the big buildings and restaurants intrigued me, there were also awesome academic opportunities. The university had
an honors building, a great studying abroad system, and an impressive nursing program. This is a college that any of our
intelligent scholars can go to. They produce the most graduates in the Nashville area and around 24,000 students attend
there. The place is obviously packed for a reason and it looks good to me. What did you think about MTSU?

Enrichment Spotlight: A2D Soccer Paying attention to detail.
By Christine Ko NAZA Pulse Staff Reporter
This week, Scholars were able to participate in a
new Enrichment: A2D Soccer. This program is a
Nashville group that trains players at all levels. They
are able to do this by focusing more on skills rather
than age and it allows for them to build a solid
foundation. Students are focusing on a variety of
skills including: agility, dribbling and ball control,
defending, cuts, moves, tricks, shielding, first touch
pass, and one on one competition. Here’s what
some students have to say about it:
“It was cool. Our coach is from the United
States International Soccer team and he
taught us some new drills to enhance our
soccer skills.” – Camren Martin and Marcus
Moore
“It’s very humbling because there are a lot
of good players here and you are motivated
to improve.” – Presley Nmoh
The 2016 Summer Olympics The Road to Rio!
By Hiwot Demelash NAZA Pulse Staff Reporter
We’re halfway through 2016. I know that every New Year people rave about the
upcoming year being the one that changes everything but I’d say that 2016 is unique.
Here are the reasons why:
It’s a lunar year, there’s a presidential election (a historical one at that.), there was a FIFA
World Cup, and Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar. Though all of these things are
fascinating in their own right, there’s one thing that unites people from all around the
world. It’s the Olympics.
Dating back to 1896, the Olympics have been around to recognize and reward athletes
from all over the world. It doesn’t need an introduction, everyone knows of the
Olympics. This year, it will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Set your calendars to August 5th.
That’s when it starts off. Around 10,500 athletes from 206 countries are going to be
competing in 307 events. I know what you’re thinking. I didn’t know there were even that
many countries. Well, there are and sports fans from all over the globe will be holding
their breaths in hopes that their country will be represented well. Pride and anticipation
will blossom in us when it is time for the Olympics. What country are you rooting for?

What have you learned at Scholars’ Academy?
By Kaylee Bland The start of a new generation of scholars is upon us. The likely hood of these young adults graduating is strongly high. They are very excited about joining the program. I interviewed several young adults about what excited them about this academy so far. What did they learn so far? What’s fun about the enrichment they are in? They’re responses were exhilarating and refreshing. They all mention how they love meeting new and old friends. Surprisingly enough, the summer is just beginning so they have plenty of chances to meet more people and have fun while learning.

“I like that you can make a strong connection with people who’ve been to college.” It is really nice to be able to experience new exciting things with people you haven’t made friends with yet. A Famous Quote of the Week:

Enrichment Highlight: Southern Word – Poetry Scholars learn basics of mixing music.
By Yasmeen Ibrahim NAZA Pulse Correspondent
Southern Word came and did a poetry workshop with our Scholars. In
this class, students are able to learn “how to write and express ourselves
better,” according to Mason Jenkins. “Southern Word makes it easier to
talk to people,” says Isaiah Capps and Frederick Reid recommends doing
Southern Word in the future because “it allows me to express myself.
Below, we have an original poem that was written during the enrichment
block this week.
Enrichment Highlight: African Drumming Creating beautiful bouquets.
By Mekiah Campbell
Flower Arrangement Enrichment Leader
African Drumming is back this year and led by Site
Director, Mr. Hook. This popular enrichment
choice allows for students to learn how to play
various African drums in order to express how
they were feeling. They learn different rhythms,
patterns, and how to play in an ensemble. Here’s
what some of the Scholars had to say about it:
“Drumming is very fun and laid back.” –
Dawayne Jackson
“I think drumming is cool and it is fun to
do.” – Kamiyla Howard
“Drumming is fun because it’s loud and I
like loud stuff.” – Diamond Gilmore

“When You Hear the Word Ugly You Think Of” by Patricyonna Rodgers
And yet she found herself writing “ugly” on her mirror because that’s
what she saw. Flipping through magazines she sees her downfall.
She felt herself writing lonely on her body because that’s what she was.
Alone like the homeless that nobody helps.
And yet she felt herself conforming to society’s perception of beauty not
knowing that she is the beautiful butterfly ready to come out of its
cocoon.
She felt her stomach eating itself because she wasn’t a size zero.
Because she wasn’t beautiful.
Because she felt ugly
And yet I found myself writing “perfect” on her body because that’s what
she is.
