A Note from Kathy Dube, Administrator
So begins a New Year at The Maples. 2017 went by in a
whirl wind with all that happened, and we look forward to
2018 being filled with calm and peaceful times. We still
have some work to do in the households, and some renovation to be completed, but all
with the hope of an ending date in sight. We are so grateful for the wonderful
changes that 2017 brought; including moving into our beautiful, new building. On
behalf of the staff and residents of The Maples, we wish each and every person who
has anything to do with The Maples, a bright and prosperous 2018! ~ Kathy D.

Resident Reflections-Joyce Archey
Joyce Archey was born on August 25, 1924 to Frank
and Alice Blaisdell, She grew up in the Upper
Peninsula, in Houghton, Michigan, along with her
brother, George, and her two sisters, Betty and
Ramona. Joyce always kept watch over her two
younger sisters and made sure they got on the bus
before her because once you got on the bus, you
couldn’t get off, and she wanted to make sure they
were safe. Joyce enjoyed going to school in Gould
City, Michigan and loved playing hopscotch and jump
rope with her friends.
It was love at first sight for her future husband,
Francis (Andy) Archey. When he saw her, he said,
“I’m going to marry that girl!” He became friends
with some of her friends but she was very shy. He
asked if she wanted to visit a mutual friend with him and that finally broke the ice.
The war put their plans on hold and Joyce worked at Blaney Park Resort where she
made salads, and at AC Spark Plug where she made spark plugs for planes during the
war while her fiancé was away fighting. Once he returned home, they were married
on October 16, 1943 in Flint, Michigan and raised a wonderful family of two boys,
Robert and Stephen, and two girls, Joan and Joyce. One of her happiest memories
was being so happy with her husband and their marriage. She loved and enjoyed her
family so much! They were her whole world and still are!
Joyce and her family did a lot of traveling from the Upper Peninsula to Flint and also
went to many Jehovah’s Witness Conventions. Her faith is very important to her and
she gave many hours as a volunteer to Christian Ministries and participating in door-
to-door ministries for Jehovah’s Witness.
Joyce’s favorite color is red, her favorite animals are dogs, and her favorite food is
vanilla ice cream. One of her hobbies included quilting and if you stop by her room
you just might see a quilt that she has made! Interview by Tracy Cooper

The Joy of Christmas
This was our first Christmas in our new facility
and there was a wonderful family feel to the
holidays. There were beautiful decorations in
each household provided by The Guild and the
Activity Department. There were visits from
Christmas carolers and Santa along with many
special events and outings. The residents all re-
ceived gifts from The Guild as well as from many
staff members. We appreciate all those who
shared the joy of the season and went the extra
mile to make this a happy Christmas for each of
our residents. Happy New Year to you all!

Making Gingerbread Houses
The residents and staff were in the holiday spirit as they made a multitude of
crafts and items for our holiday sale. One of the favorites was putting together
gingerbread houses. It took some patience to get all the walls to stand and then
add the roof without it all collapsing. But
everyone was all smiles as they added frosting,
sprinkles, chimneys, windows, and more! (It was
hard not to eat the
decorations while they
were working. )The
results were pretty
awesome.

Our annual Taste of the Holidays was better than ever because we had the Benzie High
School Key Club and Chamber Choir stop by. They brought gift bags for all of the residents
along with homemade cards. The choir presented a beautiful concert with many familiar
Christmas songs which had the residents singing along.
Then we had a wonderful holiday buffet with delicious
treats made by family members and staff. Everyone en-
joyed the great food and the chocolate dipping station
and hot cocoa bar were a huge hit. A special “thank you”
to the high school kids for sharing the Christmas spirit
and blessing the day for our residents. A huge “thank
you” to all who shared great food and to our Activity and
Dietary staff for organizing the event and putting in the
extra time and effort to make it such a success!

The Christmas Spirit
The holidays were filled
with special events and
good will. The residents
enjoyed going Christmas
shopping and finding just
the right gift for family
and friends at the Holiday
Shop set up in Activities.
Volunteers from our Guild
helped with making some
choices and then getting
those gifts wrapped.
There were a number of
groups who stopped by to
do some Christmas carol-
ing including the second
graders from Crystal Lake
Elementary, the Girl
Scouts, also from Crystal
Lake, and carolers from
First Congregational
Church of Frankfort.
Many thanks to all!
Many thanks to all the staff and visitors who made a
donation to Toys for Tots. We collected more toys this
year than any other and they came and emptied the bin
twice! The toys you shared and your giving spirit have
made this a happy Christmas for many kids in our area.
Thank You for Giving!
