FACTS
& FIGURES
The Division of Bennelong is an Australian electorate in New South Wales.
The division was CREATED IN 1949
Named for Bennelong, an Aboriginal man befriended by the first Governor of New South Wales, Arthur Phillip.
27 ELECTIONS, 26 WON BY LIBERALS, 1 WON BY LABOUR
2007 voter turnout in Bennelong was 95%
Bennelong originally covered Ryde, Hunters Hill and Lane Cove, but not areas such as Eastwood and Epping that are now contained within the seat
The seat of Bennelong had gradually shifted to the north-west over the decades, taking in Epping. The 1992 redistribution saw the last parts of Lane Cove removed from the seat, and Howard’s margin was cut in 1993

When the Division of Bennelong was created
in 1949, it covered mainly the suburbs of Ryde,
Hunters Hill and Lane Cove, all of which were
(and still are) relatively affluent areas, and as
such it has historically been a “safe” Liberal
seat.
Over the years Bennelong has evolved into
a marginal seat, and this has been attributed
to two factors. Firstly, the electoral boundary
of Bennelong has been redrawn (“redistrib-
uted”) numerous times, to exclude the wealthy
Lane Cove and Hunters Hill in the East, and
to incorporate Eastwood, Epping, Carlingford
and working class Ermington in the North and
West. Secondly, the demographic has changed
as well: since the early 1990s, Eastwood and
surrounding suburbs have seen an influx of
migrants from China, Hong Kong, South Korea
and India, who are relatively affluent and con-
servative, but are sensitive towards political
policies on immigration and multiculturalism
When Howard first won Bennelong, his home
at Wollstonecraft was in the electorate. It was
removed by the 1977 redistribution, and Benne-
long continued to moved westward over time,

“Eastwood is a suburb of Syd-
ney, in the state of New South
Wales, Australia. Eastwood is
located 17 kilometres north-
west of the Sydney central
business district in the local
government areas of the City
of Ryde and the City of Par-
ramatta. Eastwood is in the
Northern Suburbs region.
Originally thought to have
been inhabited by the Wal-
lumedegal Aboriginal tribe,
who lived in the area between
the Lane Cove and Parramatta
Rivers the area was first set-
tled by Europeans shortly after
the arrival of the First Fleet in
1788, from land grants to Roy-
al Marines and NSW Corps,
and was named “Eastwood”
by an early Irish free settler,
William Rutledge.
Today it is a large urban centre
in the north of Sydney of over
14,000 people, with a large
shopping area. Eastwood has
a large population of Asian
descent with immigrants
from China and South Korea
transforming the commercial
precinct in the past decade.

Epping is located 18 kilometres north-west of the Sydney central business
district.
The Wallumedegal Aboriginal tribe lived in the area between the Lane Cove
River and Parramatta River. Epping had a population of 20,227 in 2011.
Epping is located 18 kilometres north-west of the Sydney central business
district.
Approximately 49.5% of residents living in Epping are Australian born and the
majority of its migrant residents hail from China (11.7%), South Korea (6.6%),
Hong Kong (6.1%), India (4.6%) and England (2.3%) respectively.
Epping is also known to be a more affluent suburb in its region, as evidenced
by its higher median house prices compared to neighbouring suburbs, and
the high proportion of professionals who reside in Epping (nearly double the
Sydney average)
Silent disco has become a common name[1] for a disco where people dance to music listened
to on wireless headphones. Rather than using a speaker system, music is broadcast via an FM-
transmitter with the signal being picked up by wireless headphone receivers worn by the partici-
pants. Those without the headphones hear no music, giving the effect of a room full of people
dancing to nothing. Often two DJs compete for listeners. Silent discos are popular at music fes-
tivals as they allow dancing to continue past noise curfews. Similar events are “mobile clubbing”
gatherings, where a group of people dance to the music on their personal music players.
