I heartily welcome you to Covenant University's 9th
Convocation Ceremony for the Release of Eagles 2014.
This year's convocation brings us yet closer to our
aspiration of raising for our nation and continent an
army of pathfinders, pacesetters and trailblazers in all
fields of human endeavour, who will rebuild the old
wastes and reclaim Africa's lost glory. Through the help
of God, this vision is being validated in the external
context of the University both nationally and
internationally.
Covenant University in her twelve years of existence has
maintained a culture of excellence in education and this
has produced significant results, which have received
accolades nationally and internationally. For two years
running, the First Class graduates of the University have
emerged tops in the Presidential Special Scholarship
Scheme for Innovation and Development (PRESSID) in
Nigeria (2013 & 2014).
Our graduates are recognized all over the world. Most
of them have gained postgraduate admissions to
world-class universities where they graduated as the
best students in most cases. They are registering
indelible footprints in the academia and the world of
work. Quite a good number of them have become
employers of labour. Thus, helping to address the
unemployment challenges in our nation.
To fur ther attest to their employabil ity and
resourcefulness, the current Registrar, the Dean of
Students' Affairs, and the Director of Physical Planning
and Development of Covenant University are all
graduates of the University and are doing very well in
their current assignments.
Our goal to be ranked among the top ten universities in
the world by the year 2022 is very much on course.
A notable landmark was achieved by organizing the st1 International Conference on African Development
Issues, which addressed key development concerns in
Africa and how the continent could catch up with
advanced economies. Among the resource persons
and experts at the conference were two Nobel
Laureates, Professor Thomas J. Sargent, a 2011 Nobel
Prize Winner in Economic Sciences and currently a
Professor of Economics at the New York University; and
Professor Eric S, Maskin, a 2007 Nobel Prize Winner in
Economic Sciences and currently the Adams University
Professor at Harvard University.
Shortly after the conference, the African Leadership
Development Centre, Covenant University organized
a-3day programme on Conflict Management and
Resolution: A Leadership Competence Development
Workshop, aimed at finding indigenous solutions to
contemporary socio-political, economic and cultural
issues affecting Nigeria and Africa at large. After robust
discussions and debate, the Workshop made far-
reaching resolutions and recommendations, which will
help solve perennial conflicts in the continent.
This year also, the University instituted Leadership
Diploma Certificate Course for our graduating class.
This is part of our efforts to imbue our products with
relevant leadership skills to effect the desired change in
the society as new generation of leaders. Our
graduands today, happen to be the first beneficiaries of
the programme.thLadies and gentlemen, I welcome you again to this 9
convocation ceremony to witness the release of eagles
2014.
Thank you and be richly blessed in Jesus Name! Amen!

their various degrees of studies. This is a major
accomplishment in fulfilling the Leadership gaps in our
country and Africa in general. Furthermore, for the
second time running, CU topped the list of successful
candidates in the 2014 Presidential Special Scholarship
Development for Innovation and Development
(PRESSID) by producing 19 out of 200 First Class
Graduates of all Nigerian Universities for sponsorship
to 25 top universities in the world. It will be recalled that
the University topped the list in the maiden edition with
10 out of 101 successful candidates. To God alone be
all the glory!
It is on this note that I want to congratulate the
graduands of today, their parents and the prospective

the right choice of coming to Covenant University.
To our distinguished guests and well-wishers, I thank
you all for your roles in making today's event a huge th
success. Welcome to this 9 Convocation ceremony of
Covenant University.
Thank you and God bless you.
Professor C. K. Ayo
Vice-Chancellor
I count it a great privilege and honour to th
welcome this distinguished gathering to the 9
Convocation Ceremony of Covenant University th
today, the 27 of June, 2014.
This Convocation ceremony is certainly a
moment that we should all savor and enjoy, noting
the faithfulness of God in the affairs of the
University. If we take a quick look around us, I am
sure we all will agree that Covenant University has
come a long way in charting paths for others to
follow.
It was John F. Kennedy who said, “The progress
of a nation can be no swifter than her progress in
education”, “the human mind” he said, “is our
fundamental resource”. (Paraphrased)
In our quest to turn out quality graduates for
accelerated national development, the University
is strategically driving Vision 10:2022. The
mandate is to get the University listed as one of
the top ten universities in the world within the next
ten years. This vision, tagged [1 of 10 in 10] is
getting more real by the day. The news of the stsuccess of the 1 International Conference on
African Development Issues (ICADI) is still making
the rounds. The presence of two Nobel Laureates
in economics, Professor Eric Stark Maskin (2007
winner) and Professor Thomas Sargent (2011
winner) as lead speakers, is a unique and
unparalleled feat in the history of University
Education in Nigeria and indeed Africa.
Moreover, under the Summer School
Programme, the University is billed to host a total
of 10 Conferences and Workshops having in
attendance Visiting Professors from our overseas
collaborating universities. During the period, our
students would undertake exchange programmes
at our partner universities abroad.
Another notable landmark was attained this
year. This set of graduands is the first to be
awarded a certificate in Leadership in addition to
