Credited as the inventor of radio, Guglielmo
Marconi is best known for his pioneering work on
long-distance transmissions and as the founder of
the Wireless Telegraph and Signal Company. Set up
in 1897, the organisation went on to become one
of the most successful manufacturing firms in the
UK, responsible for some of the most important
advances ever made in radio and television.
Admired by his peers, Marconi’s groundbreaking
work earned him the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1909
and his ‘marvelous invention’ was even hailed as
having been instrumental in the recovery of more
than 700 survivors of the Titanic disaster. Later in
1912, the first ever purpose built radio factory –
the Marconi Works at New Street – became the
headquarters for his game changing empire.
