Nelson CountyDemocrats held theirCounty Convention at 10a.m. Saturday, April 14, at inthe City Council MeetingRoom for the purposes ofelecting a new DemocraticExecutive Committee for afour-year term, and select-ing delegates to the StateDemocratic Convention inLouisville on June 2.

Precinct officers whowere elected at the PrecinctConventions on March 31,nominated and voted for 10men and 10 women and oneyouth to constitute theNelson County DemocraticExecutive Committee forthe next four years.

Those nominated andelected were MargieBradford, Dixie Hibbs,Howard Keene, NormaRapier, Mayor BillSheckles, Dick Heaton, JimClark, Frankie Cambron,Kenny Fogle, MagistrateKeith Metcalfe, Tom Donan,Lyda Moore, Mary JaneGreenwell, Mary K. Drake,Merle Brady, DeeDee FordKeene, Janice Donan, C.Paul McCoy, LanceBlanford, Betty Seay, andAudrey Haydon as the Youthrepresentative. DemocraticWoman's Club PresidentAnne Hamilton is an ex-officio member.

Margie Bradford waselected Chairman, andHoward Keene was elected

as Vice-Chair. Jim Clarkwas appointed as Treasurerand Mary Jane Greenwell asSecretary. The next meetingdate for the new committeeis May 14.

Delegates were chosen toattend the Democratic StateConvention for the purposesof electing a new StateCentral Committee on June2, and to attend theCongressional Caucuses tochoose delegates to theNational DemocraticConvention Sept. 3-6.

Those delegates includeMayor Bill Sheckles,Democratic Vice ChairHoward Keene, DeeDeeFord Keene, Tom Donan,Adam Martinez, LanceBlanford, and alternate,Magistrate Keith Metcalfe.

Program April 13. The 18-week academy provides newlaw enforcement officersthroughout the state with aneducational foundation forsuccess through qualitycriminal justice training.

Lewis is employed by theCity of Springfield PoliceDepartment. He is a 2007graduate of Bardstown High

School, and was previouslya member of the semi-pro-fessional football team,Kentucky Wolverines.

He is the son ofBardstown Assistant PoliceChief, Major Ray Lewis,and the grandson of the lateJames W. and Kathryn P.Lewis.

Jim Cantrell, renownedKentucky artist, is beingawarded with the Alumni ofthe Year for CreativeAchievement, again. In thefall of 2000, Cantrell wasawarded Alumni of the Yearfor Creative Achievementby the University ofNorthern Colorado inGreeley where he hadreceived his Masters’Degree in Fine Art with adouble emphasis in ceram-ics and painting.

On April 21, theUniversity of Nebraska atLincoln is awardingCantrell with this award atits Honors Day AwardsDinner at the Hixson-LiedCollege of Fine andPerforming Arts. At thesame time the SheldonMuseum of Art will exhibittwo Cantrell oils that arealready in its permanentcollection as well as thepainting, “Taking Flight,”which the museum is con-sidering for acquisition.

Cantrell received hisBachelor of Fine Arts inEducation degree from theUniversity in 1958 and pro-ceeded to teach art for 14years in Nebraska,Colorado and Berea

College in Kentucky beforemoving to Bardstown in1971 to set up his independ-ent studios in Spalding Hall.

The Kentucky Arts

Council in Frankfort hasreceived a number of nomi-nations recommendingCantrell for the Governor’sAward in Art.

Local artist to be honored with Alumni ofYear award from University of Nebraska

The Sheldon Museum of Art is considering “TakingFlight” as its next acquisition from Jim Cantrell. Themuseum already has two of his pieces in its permanentcollection.

The Sutton Studio opensThe Sutton Studio for the Performing Arts celebrated its grand opening with a ribboncutting on Thursday. Pictured are Terri Sutton, Josh Gilliam, owner - Jamie Lynn Gilliamand students, Madison Brady, Caroline Ball and Rhyanne Fritz along with Ambassadorsof the Chamber of Commerce, family and friends. The Sutton Studio at 955 Frost Ave.,Bardstown, offers classes in voice, acting, piano and dance. Well qualified teachers, ageappropriate costumes and two recitals a year.
