Homecoming: A Great Way to Celebrate Fall
Nothing says Fall like Homecoming! It means face-painting, tailgating, community parades and Homecom-ing Kings, Queens and Courts.
October is a big month for Home-coming. Bay Village and Avon did it up right last weekend with parades and football pre-game ceremonies that celebrated this staple of commu-nity values.
A week earlier, Avon Lake was home-coming capital, and Westlake got things rolling the last week of Sep-tember with its annual parade and football pre-game ceremonies.
Bring on the Mums and Stream-ers! Here’s a look at our West Shore Homecoming Royalty…..

Exciting baseball play-offs – even though it isn’t our Indians; the Cleveland Browns holding their own and playing some intense games and a very interest-ing season awaiting the Cavaliers. Oh, if only the sports fans were as passion-ate about their oral health as they are about their sports! One common scenario that happens very frequently that my office manager, Joyce, hears, is women who are trying to get their sig-nificant others - boyfriends and husbands to the dentist. (Don’t forget fathers and sons also) The male part of the equation keeps resisting them. Women tell Joyce all the time that their husbands have bad breath and they would love to get them in to see the dentist or that their husbands are in sales and they wish they would get their teeth fixed so that they would look more presentable. We hear it time and time again.
So, rip out this article and give it to your signifi-cant other because now I’m
going to direct the rest of this to the men in your lives.
Look, man, you’ve got bad breath, whether you know it or not. She’s been trying to tell you this for a long time, but she doesn’t have the heart. Your bad breath could be coming from disease, not brushing your teeth or not getting them professionally cleaned often enough, or as new re-search has found, can be re-lated to some systemic dis-eases. Your gum disease in your mouth could also make all kinds of physical prob-lems you have, like diabetes and heart disease worse.
GO SEE THE DEN-TIST! The dentist can help get rid of your bad breath, treat your gum disease, fill those big holes in your mouth that have been pack-ing food, causing more bad breath, and make your en-tire body healthier. Women, if appropriate, feel free to rip out the next paragraph as well for your male partner, if this one applies.
Look, man, your teeth
are yellow and they don’t look nice. You are around people all day who judge you by the way you look. You are in sales or manage-ment and your teeth are embarrassing. When you go to parties, she cringes at the way people’s faces change when you smile and you show those less than desir-able looking teeth.
GO GET THEM FIXED. Dental procedures like whitening and veneers are minimally invasive ways to get a good looking smile with very little need for shots or drilling. Get them fixed and you won’t be sur-prised when you become the social butterflies that she has always wanted you to be.
Keep in mind, most of you have dental insurance that you never use. You’ve worked hard for that benefit, but you’ve been throwing
money away by not taking advantage of the savings. Es-pecially at this time of year, it is wise to utilize your den-tal benefits before the end of the year. We know you’re busy with meetings, travel-ing, and your kid’s activities. Why not try to carve just a little time out for yourself to address your dental needs? Trust me, a nice smile will be one of the greatest pres-ents you could give to the woman in your life. Think about how much more kiss-able you will be for her!
And now, this para-graph is for both men and women. Please call our of-fice for any of your dental needs at 440-892-1810. I hope this column has been helpful, especially to the women! We are here to help you smile.

Bay Village celebrates homecoming each fall with a traditional parade from Cahoon Park to the high school. Last Friday’s annual parade was held in fine style, with par-ticipants enjoying great autumn weather. Bay’s homecom-ing court occupied the lead cars, featuring Noah Hitchcock, Allison Finley, Katherine Koomar (Queen), Christopher Allison (King), Lea Flanagan and Arif Caushaj.
Bay Mayor Debbie Sutherland, a Bay High grad, greet-ed well-wishers along the way. The Bay High Marching Band offered rousing music, and many Bay Village civic community groups took part as residents lined the way with smiles, a few bonfires and plenty of home-town fun.

Community West Foundation honors excellence in giving by presenting the prestigious Art of Caring Award each year. The award signifies exceptional generosity, commitment and outstanding community support. The 2014 award winner is Milan “Mike” Busta, honored last Thursday, Oct. 9, in ceremonies at LaCentre in Westlake. “Our award is simply and per-fectly named – ‘The Art of Caring’ - and it is a description that certainly fits this year’s award recipient, Mike Busta,” said David T. Dombrowiak, President & CEO of the Commu-nity West Foundation. “Mike excels in the grace of giving. He holds generosity as a value by choosing to give of his time, talents, and treasures to the service of others – and he is mak-ing our community a better place.” Mike has made his mark on our community’s landscape. In addition to his regular cash con-tributions to charities, he feels so strongly about the necessity of giv-ing back to others that he opened twenty Charitable Gift Annuities. Mike has channeled the last six of those Charitable Gift Annuities through the Community West Foundation. “Community West Foundation makes it easy to support the causes I choose by taking care of all the paperwork and ad-ministrative responsibilities,” said Busta. Mike’s impact truly focuses on the lo-cal level and in all spans of local life, tar-geting social segments from Educational Institutions, Health and Wellness, Faith Based Institutions and Community Devel-opment.

His selflessness was noted by his three sons in attendance, Michael, William and Paul. “As far back as I can remember, supporting charitable organizations was the norm for my parents,” said Michael. William credits his “father’s contributions of time and resources as inspiration and exam-ple, creating a family culture of civic participa-tion.” “Our father taught us many family values during dinnertime conversations,” said Paul. “Those responsibilities include not just volun-teerism, but also making an impact on chosen causes.” Mike is just as active in the local commu-nity, willingly sharing his talents and expertise with others illustrated through his past and present involvement serving on the boards of

In describing his reason for starting Charitable Gift Annuities, Mike said that, in 1997, he heard a radio advertisement from the Cleveland Orchestra about this type of giving vehicle. After discussing it with his wife, Jean, he called up the Or-chestra and started his very first CGA. He thought it was a good idea and was some-thing meaningful.
“Mike exemplifies the Models of Christian servitude to his community. As a donor, he is a shining example of Illumi-nating Hope,” said Dombrowiak. “Throughout history, public steward-ship and philanthropy have sustained non-profit organizations. Tonight we honor a lifetime of generosity, devotion and service to our community. “Giving from a generous heart, Mike Busta has shown us countless ways in which we may serve and thus meet the call that what we do unto the least of God’s children, we do unto Him. “What a tremendous example of one who has practiced charitable and social responsibility to help meet community needs for the present and the future. Mike epitomizes the best of what philanthropy really means and he reflects the very best of what makes our community great.”

Homecoming 2014 was celebrated in fine style in Avon last week as fes-tivities were culminated with the crowning of King Drew Dudukovich and Queen Alexandria Darus before Friday’s football game against North Rid-geville.
The seniors took the field together as attendants and were then surprised with the great news that they were now homecoming royalty.
Homecoming Court is a big event in Avon, a point of community pride and unity. Named to this year’s homecoming court were freshmen attendants Claudia Hermann and Cole Bramhall, sophomore attendants Gabrielle Laboy and William Kocar, junior attendants Erin Conn and Alex Rimko, senior JVS Attendants Alyssa Tabar and Jerimias Fuentes, and senior attendants Cassidy Clark and Cory Ohradznsky, Katie Shusta and Wes Ford, Samantha Saghy and Charlie Erlenbach as well as Nicole Hubbard and Ryan Sikora.
The event signified months of work by the high school community that pulled together to create a week of memorable events. Some great memories were created indeed, especially for Drew and Alexandria, who were very ex-cited to not only be named to the court but crowned King and Queen.

For the sixth year in a row, Mercy has been named a NorthCoast 99 award winner and among the best places to work in Northeast Ohio, according to the Employer’s Re-source Council (ERC).
According to ERC, Mercy demonstrates policies and practices that support employee efforts and ideas to make a meaningful and positive impact in the workplace and surrounding Lorain community. “We lead by example by providing an environment that allows our employees to take an active role in making an impact using their skills, knowledge, abilities, and creativity; to adapt to emerging and changing needs inside and outside of the hospital; and to take leadership roles in making their ideas come to life,” says Edwin Oley, president and CEO, Mercy.
In addition to successfully engaging employees, the Mercy mission and core values are emphasized in every step of the recruiting, hiring and training process.
All candidates applying for a position within Mercy are made aware of the organization’s mission, values and Standards of Behavior during the interview process and sign a document indicating their willingness to uphold these standards if employed. During the interview process, service excellence questions — including mission and val-ues-based questions—are part of the one-on-one interview process.
Once hired, a special part of the orientation process includes a “Missioning Ceremony” in the Mercy Chapel. It is a ceremony where the employee commits to living by Mercy values and extending our mission to the patients they serve.
“Our employees play a key role in providing the high-quality, compassionate care of Mercy,” says Oley. “We are honored to be recog-nized once again for sup-porting and empowering our employees.”

Quarterback Jake Sopko added 224 yards passing while Zack Torbert had three catches plus a TD. Special teams ace Alex Rimko played a key role as the Eagles designated guided missile. Pearl Crossing is a great choice for independent se-nior living on Pearl Road in fabulous Strongsville. Pri-vate apartments, chef-prepared meals and no long term commitments are all part of the plan. It’s fun, too. Just ask resident Ann Fick, who had a ball with friends at the recent Harvest Festival hosted there. Fall crafts were part of the fun.
