The Spring “New” High Holy Days
A Message of Faith
This year the month of May coincides with the
Hebrew month of Iyar, and our Jewish calendar
includes three holidays that were established
after the founding of the State of Israel. They
are Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance),
Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day), and Yom
Ha’atzma’ut (Israel Independence Day). These
“new” High Holy Days, are at the center of our
national and Jewish consciousness.
Indeed, our Reform Movement’s siddur/prayerbook, Mishkan T’filah
includes special commemorative services for all three
observances. The special prayers and readings for Yom Hashoah
highlights these words of Holocaust survivor Dan Pagis, called
Written in Pencil on the Wall of a Sealed Freight Car
here, in this carload, I am Eve, with Abel my son.
If you see my other son, Cain, the son of man,
Tell him I…”
We dedicate a day to remember those who lie in unmarked graves
all over Europe, and to honor those who rose up to fight against the
Nazi death machine.
The second commemoration is Yom Hazikaron – Israeli Memorial
Day. Yom Hazikaron recalls the men and women of the Israel
Defense Force who were killed defending their country. We honor
the courageous men and women who have stood and fought on
Israel’s borders, who died for Jewish freedom and
independence. Mishkan T’filah includes these words to mark the
occasion: “Remember our brothers and sisters whose sacrifice gave
birth to the State of Israel; may their courage be our inspiration and
our strength. For life cut short and vision unrealized: we
remember.”
The last and culminating communal moment of the month is a
celebration: Yom Ha’atzma’ut, Israel Independence Day. Even after
sixty-eight years of statehood, we cannot afford to be complacent or
indifferent about Israel’s existence. It faces many threats from
within that endanger its democracy. It lives with a very real
existential vulnerability, with countries like Iran that openly speak
about violently destroying it, and movements like BDS that single it
out for hatred. We should still be deeply moved and inspired by its
very existence as a free, democratic and pluralistic nation amidst a
sea of dictatorships, autocracies, and terrorist entities. The
generation of individuals who remember the world without Israel is
growing older, but just ask any one of them what the world was like
for Jews before 1948, and they will shudder. But the State of Israel
exists not only as a refuge for threatened diaspora Jewish
communities. On the contrary, it is the real and symbolic emblem
of our people’s return to history and the world stage after 2000
years of mostly dreadful dispersion. Thus, Mishkan T’filah’s Yom
Ha’atzma’ut service includes these words of the prophet Jeremiah,
who went into exile with the destruction of the First Temple in
Jerusalem in 2,600 years ago: “And I Myself will gather the remnant
of the flock from all the lands…And I will bring them back to their
pasture. And they will dwell upon their own soil.”
I have mindfully referenced Mishkan T’filah several times in this
column. It is to underscore that Reform Judaism is aligned with the
world Jewish community when we observe occasions that touch Jews
everywhere. We are as much a part of the collective as Jews of all
kinds, from the steadfastly secular to the most observant Haredi,
and our liturgy reflects our inclusion and our ideology.
But even as our new prayerbook increased the pages devoted to
these modern commemorations, on the ground I have witnessed a
shrinking liberal Zionist community, and a growing distance
between progressive Jews and Israel. We are slowly disappearing
from the Zionist camp. This is reflected here in Columbus
too. Whenever we gather as a larger Columbus Jewish community
for Yom Hashoah, Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzma’ut, Reform Jews
are noticeably absent from those commemorations and
observances. It is an uncomfortable and disappointing truth, and
our absence in recent years from the public commemorations and
celebrations is noticeable and interpreted as apathy toward the
world Jewish community. This must change. It is time that we
embrace and fully participate, not only in spirit, but with our fully
present selves, at the Jewish community observances of Yom
Hashoah, Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzma’ut.
The dates are:
Yom Hashoah—Wednesday, May 4 — 7 to 9 PM at Agudas Achim,
featuring Dr. Rachel Korazim, Holocaust scholar and educator
Yom Hazikaron—Wednesday, May 11 — 7 to 8:30 PM at the Jewish
Community Center
IsraelFest—Thursday, May 12 — 4:00 PM into the early evening
at the Jewish Community Center
I look forward to commemorating with you.
Rabbi Misha Zinkow

Engagement Presidents’ Message
Dear Temple Israel Families –
Recently, we had the opportunity to meet with Rabbi Rick
Jacobs of the Union for Reform Judaism. In the course of our
conversation, he emphasized that ultimately the core of the
Jewish people is changing. He commended the deep digging
we’ve been doing here at Temple Israel, and applauded the heart
of our work as a true investigation of our fundamental principles
and foundation. Rabbi Jacobs identified this work as a true
indication that our congregation is open to change.
We are pleased to report that after eight months, fourteen focus
groups, and two-hundred plus survey responses, we are ready to
synthesize the results of the Design Team project. We want to
take this opportunity to extend a heart-felt and sincere thank
you for your involvement in our efforts. We are especially
grateful to those of you that have given your time to attend a
discussion and provide valuable feedback. We are listening to
your input, ideas and concerns -- we hope this is just the
beginning of our ongoing collaboration.
With your input, we have already begun to identify
opportunities to imagine Temple Israel differently. With
your ideas, we have already begun to experiment with new
possibilities. With your feedback we will continue to explore
bold ideas and ways to ‘do Jewish’ a little bit differently. With
your partnership – we hope to begin to change our existing
policies and practices to become a more inclusive, open and
authentic place to worship and engage spiritually.
Thank you for your willingness to share your aspirations for your
personal Jewish journey. We will continue to walk this path of
change together.

Reading Jewish Books
Tuesday, May 3
12:30 PM at the JCC
Lunch optional (quiche & salad) $10
We will be reading “All Who Go Do Not Return: A Memoir”
by Shulem Deen*
This is a moving and revealing exploration of Hasidic life, and one
man’s struggle with faith, family and community. Shulem Deen was
raised to believe that questions are dangerous. As a member of Skverers,
one of the most insular Hasidic sects in the U.S., he knows little about
the outside world – only that it is to be shunned. His marriage at
eighteen is arranged and several children soon follow. Deen’s first
transgression – turning on the radio – is small, but his curiosity leads
him to the library, and later to the internet. Soon he begins a feverish
inquiry into the tenets of his religious beliefs until, several years later, his
faith unravels entirely. This is an important book about the
consequences of being true to oneself and about a world and a
community few of us know.
*Book is available for purchase for $8.60 (tax included) from Cheryl
Dritz at the JCC. To reserve your copy, call Cheryl at the JCC, 614-559-
6238, or contact her at [email protected].
Books are selected from suggestions by those present at the Book Group.

Women of Temple Israel 2016 Tzedakah Collective
Our WTI Tzedakah Collective is off and
running! Last month, 21 members and friends
gathered together at the Palace Theatre to enjoy a
production of Mary Poppins in support of the
Pleasure Guild of Nationwide Children’s
Hospital. Collectively we raised $189, which will
support the Hospice and Palliative Care Program
of the hospital. We have also met with a Pleasure
Guild volunteer to learn more about the organization, and learned
about Judaism and Hospice Care.
Future plans include a September 5k in support of Ovarian Cancer
research and exploring Sharsheret, a national not-for-profit Jewish
organization that supports women and their families facing breast
and ovarian cancer. Additional local organizations that support
women and children will also be considered as grant recipients,
including the YWCA family shelter, Maryhaven and Girls on the
Run.
Our Tzedakah Collective is an on-going philanthropy project open
to all women from Reform congregations in Central Ohio. Each
member donates $60 (only $5 per month!), with the full amount
collected being donated to one or more of the agencies discussed
throughout the year. All donations are tax deductible.
Contact Cheryl Agranoff, [email protected] or (614) 738-1639,
or Betsey Krause, [email protected], if you are interested in
participating or would like additional information. Tentative
upcoming dates are 6/5, 8/7, 9/11, 10/23 and 12/4. Virtual
members are welcome to join us, and participation at our meetings
is not a requirement.

New Group Forms to Focus on Global Migrant Crisis
Nick Breyfogle, Karen Spierling, Rabbi Sharon Mars, Scott
Levi, Jillian Gustin, and Charlie Breyfogle (pictured left to
right) met last month for the first meeting of the Temple Israel
Syrian Refugee Alliance. When Charlie gave a powerful d'var
torah speech at his bar mitzvah this past January focusing on the
global migrant crisis, an important conversation was sparked
among his parents, friends, and other congregants. How can we
help even one migrant family? And how can we be part of a
Jewish effort to do so? Stay tuned as this group takes shape in
the next few months , and contac t J i l l i an
Gustin ([email protected]) for details.
