Design
Applicable Codes & Standards
An efficient Pre Engineered Building System is computer assisted, and designed for a specific use. Computerised design allows
buildings to be tailored to individual customer’s requirements. The complete building system is Pre Engineered to facilitate easy
production & assembly on site. United Steel & Structurals Pvt. Ltd. is one of the very few companies around the world using
State-of-the-Art Design Software for the design and detailing engineering. With STAAD PRO and STRUTS Design Software (Indian
and American Versions) updated to the latest versions, handled by highly qualified structural engineers, even the most complex
structures are designed with ease. Every USS Pre Engineered Metal Building is unique in terms of its quality, affordablity and
feasibility.
Climatic conditions are different from one place to another. Unless otherwise required by local conditions, all Steel buildings are
designed and manufactured in accordance with American Codes, which are updated to the latest edition. United Steel & Structurals
Pvt. Ltd. applies the following US codes , which are recognized as the PEB standard worldwide, for designing of all steel buildings :
• Wind zone and velocity are considered and applied as per latest edition of IS875-1987 code of practice for design loads.
• Seismic loads are considered and applied as per seismic zone in the latest edition of IS1893-1984 (Revised in 2002). Seismic load
of application is considered as per the latest edition of MBMA- 1986
• Loads on the buildings are applied in accordance with the latest edition of International Building Codes, International Code
Council. Inc (IBC) 4051, West Flossmoor Road, Club Hill, IL 60478-5795, USA.
• Loads on the building are applied in accordance with low rise building system manual of Metal Building Manufactures
Association INC, (MBMA), 1300 Summer Ave, Cleveland Ohio 44115, USA, 1986 edition, 1990 supplement and the latest edition
and supplements.
• Hot rolled sections and built- up sections are designed as per the ninth edition (1989) of Manual of Steel Construction-
Allowable Stress Design of American Institute of Steel Construction. Inc (AISC)1 East Wacker Drive, Suite 3100, Chicago, Illinois-
60601-2001, USA
• Design for Cold Form Section are carried out as per the 1980 edition of Cold Formed Steel Design Manual of American Iron &
Steel Institute (AISI), 1000, 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC, USA and the latest edition and supplements.
• Welding is carried out in accordance with the 19th Edition (2004) of Structural Welding Code – Steel (AWS DLIM:2004) of the
American Welding Society (AWS), 550 NE Lejeune Road, Miami, FL 33126, USA and the latest edition and supplements.
• Wherever relevant codes are not available, the buildings are designed and constructed as per the latest edition of IS 800

Exterior Cladding:
Exterior Cladding provide a weather tight envelope.
Transfer Structural Loads i.e. wind & live loads to the supporting secondary framing.
Provides lateral bracing to the roof purlins & wall girts.
Secondary Framing:
Purlins & girts receive loads from the roof & wall covering & transfer to the main building frame.
Purlins & girts provide lateral bracing to the building columns & rafter preventing lateral bulking of the compression flanges.

A brief history of Pre Engineered Metal Buildings:
Concept of metal buildings originated in the United States in early 1900s. Simple industrial structures were built using truss rafters,
straight columns, sectional roofs & wall. Wedge pins were used for connections.
In late 1940s, the metal building system was recognized as a favourable method of construction over conventional methods, after
the US Army used large quantities of metal houses and storage modules during the World War II.
A decade later, Roll forming lines facilitated continuous span cold rolled Z purlins. Architectural appearance of metal buildings were
enhanced with the introduction of color coated panels and factory insulated panels. Major increase in design possibilities
contributed to the boom in metal buildings. The term pre-engineered buildings came into existence. Today the PEB system
dominates the low rise building market worldwide.
The USS PEB System uses computer aided design, precision roll forming lines for cladding and secondary members, automatic
production lines for structural sections, automatic beam welding methods and quality painting systems. All PEB system
components are made in its 100,000 sq.ft. manufacturing unit. USS PEB System is corrosion resistant , maintenance free & superior
in strength.
What is a Galvalume Sheet?
Galvalume is a steel sheet 55% aluminium zinc alloy hard dip coated. A superior corrosion protecting thin coating of resin applied on
the top of the Al -Zn coating. A clear organic acrylic resin coating is then applied & then thermally cured. A color coating is given on
the top surface for a bright appearance with a color of the customer’s choice. Galvalume sheet is ideally suited for most types of
roofing and cladding/wall applications as well as unexposed automotive parts, appliances and miscellaneous applications like
furniture, outdoor cabinetry, computer cases, gutters, pipe, etc. Galvalume steel sheet is widely used by architects, builders and
many others due to its versatility, ease of use, aesthetics and long-term performance.
Insulation:
The color coated steel Galvalume sheets can also be padded with rock wool or glass wool in various densities depending on the
functional requirements of the building. This padding or insulation can keep a difference of inside & outside temperature by about 5
to 8 Degree centigrade rendering better comfort to the people working within.
USS Roofing & Cladding Sheet:
United Steel & Structurals Pvt. Ltd. is equipped with state-of-the-art Roll forming which produces 4000 mt of Roofing & Cladding
sheets per month. It is 100% corrosion resistant, easy to maintain, lighter at the same time stronger than conventional sheets.

General Material Specification
Handling & Storage:
Drawings:
United Steel & Structurals Pvt. Ltd. ensures that structural
steel is stored out of mud and dirt and proper drainage of the
storage area is provided if required to protect from damage or
soiling by adjacent construction operations.
United Steel & Structurals Pvt. Ltd. prepares detailed general
arrangement drawings giving complete information
necessary for the fabrication of the structures. All information
is clearly given. The drawings are strictly in conformity with
the best modern practices. A marking diagram allotting
identification marks to each separate piece of steel work is
prepared. The drawing has sufficient details to ensure
convenient assembly and erection of the structure. Symbols
used for welding in the drawing is in accordance with IS:813.
Primary steel is cleaned to specification St2. One shop primer
coat of Red Oxide Zinc Chromate is applied with average dry
film thickness of 25 microns on all red steel. Shop primer
provides protection for elements while in transit and
construction, and is not intended to be for permanent
protection.

Building Width:
Whenever possible maintain equal bay lengths throughout the building. When this is not possible make all interior bays equal and
make the end bays equal but shorter than the interior bays.
Whenever possible make building width a multiple of 3m. This is because roof purlins are spaced at 1.5 m is equal to two purlin
spacings one on each side of the ridge.

Interior Bay Length:
No matter what primary framing system is used, the building
width is defined as the distance from outside of eave strut of
one sidewall to outside of eave strut of the opposite sidewall.
The distance between the outside flanges of endwall columns
in opposite endwall is considered the building length.
Building Length is a combination of several bay lengths.
End Bay Length is the distance from outside of the outer
flange of endwall columns to centerline of the first interior
frame columns.
Interior Bay Length is the distance between center lines of two
adjacent main frame columns. The most common bay lengths
are 7m, 7.5m and 8m. Bay length can be up to 15m by placing
Jack Beam based on the particular requirement.

Unless otherwise specified USS Pre Engineered Buildings are
designed for the following minimum loads.
Roof live loads: 0.57 KN/M2
Design Wind Speed: 140Km/h
Conditions for snow loads, earthquake loads, collateral loads
or any other local climatic condition (if required) must be
specified at the time of enquiry for quotation.
Normally, loads for Pre Engineered Steel Buildings are applied
in accordance with the latest American Codes and standards
applicable to pre engineered steel buildings as mentioned
earlier.

General Bracing system:
High grade steel plate conforming to ASTM a572 grade 50
factory painted with a minimum of 35 microns (DFT) of red
oxide primer. Cable bracing is shown. Other bracing systems
are available at the options of USS’s Engineering Department.
Cable is manufactured in accordance with ASTMA 475 extra
high strength galvanized strands.

Secondary Members: Cold Form C & Z Purlins:
USS Cold Formed C and Z Purlins provide an efficient and economical
solution for all roofing and cladding used in wide range of Industrial and
commercial applications. USS Purlins are cold formed sections
manufactured exactly to specification. The high precision, pre-punched
sections are important structural elements made from different grades of
high quality steel IS 513 / IS 10748 / IS 277.
The thickness for USS ‘C’ section varies from 1.5 mm to 6 mm & for ‘Z’ Section
from 1.5mm to 3.15mm depending on the steel framing requirement of
the building.

The most common primary framing systems are shown. All shown symmetrical about the ridge line. Framing systems
unsymmetrical about the ridge line and Multi Span framing systems with unequal width modules are also possible. Practically any

The company ‘s PEB Systems manufacturing unit is located at Madurantakam, Kanchipuram District, 67 Kms from Chennai Airport.
The unit is spread across 6 Acres with 100,000 Sq.ft shop floor facility and it is one the largest PEB Systems manufacturing unit in the
country. The factory is equipped with State-of-the-art machinery for fabrication by using high tensile steel plates, High-end
Automatic Roll Forming machine, Automatic Welding Line using SAW & MIG Welding technology as per AWS Standards. All the
components like Rigid Columns, Rafters, Cold Form Purlins & Metal Roofing/Cladding are made out of quality materials at our
manufacturing unit and transported to the site. The unit is capable of producing 2000 metric tons of Plate fabrication, 4000 metric
tons of Roofing sheets, 700 metric tons of Purlins & 600 metric tons of Decking Sheets per month. USS PEBs are designed,
fabricated, supplied and installed in a remarkably low time, thus saving precious time and money.
