While wandering the boardwalks, browsing the gift shops and taking in the sights of this historic town, be sure to visit Tombstone’s restaurants and saloons. Stay in town long
enough, and you’ll likely rub elbows with Doc Holliday, Big Nose Kate or Wyatt Earp, as locals enjoy donning 1880s period clothing and strolling through town where they mingle
with tourists. Stagecoaches rumble up and down Allen Street providing historic tours of the “town too tough to die,” launching visitors back into the days of Tombstone’s
1880s silver boom, along with its gun slinging outlaws and ladies of the evening.

Big Nose Kate’s Saloon and Restaurant is hailed as the “Best Cowboy Bar in the West.” Along with daily entertainment, 1880s clad employees, a full bar and great eating, guests are invited to venture down the spiral staircase into the subterranean depths of the saloon to a gift shop filled with a great selection of distinct clothing and unique gifts. Back in Tombstone’s silver mining heyday, the building that houses Big Nose Kate’s today was the Grand Hotel, host to such notorious personalities as Wyatt and Virgil Earp, Doc Holliday and the Clanton’s and McLaury’s. Along with a year round list of events, visitors can request a photo with 1880s clad employees or even arrange a hanging.
Open daily from 10 a.m. to midnight, the saloon is located at 417 East Allen St. “There’s always something going on at Big Nose Kate’s,” promise owners Steve and Gloria Goldstein. For information, call 520-457-3107.
Café Margarita prides itself in serving authentic Mexican and Italian dishes. Guests are invited to sip on an ice cold cactus margarita or enjoy the selection of Mexican beers. Along with its popular entrees, the menu features such Mexican appetizers as guacamole, chicken quesadillas and Rita’s nachos. Fresh salsa is prepared daily.
Located at 131 South Fifth St., Café Margarita offers a quiet setting and is a favorite dining spot among locals. For information, call 520-457-2277.
Fallen Angel Sweet Sin Parlor is the place to go for great fudge, salt water taffy, cinnamon glazed nuts, gifts and much more. The tiny shop’s savory aroma is a huge draw, with customers filling the counter area, especially during times when events are happening in Tombstone. Located at 513 East Allen St. For information, call 520-457-3057.
The Longhorn Restaurant is touted as the “oldest continually operated restaurant in Tombstone.” As one of the town’s historical buildings, the restaurant is located in what used to be the “Bucket of Blood Saloon,” the “Holiday Water Company,” and the “Owl Café.” Virgil Earp was shot from the building’s second floor. The Longhorn features a wide variety of menu items that includes daily chef specials, boasts the best barbecue smoked pork ribs and steaks in the west, and offers a children’s menu.
Open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., the Longhorn serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and is located at 501 E. Allen St. For information, call 520-457-3405.
Sweet Memories is a self-serve frozen yogurt shop that offers a variety of flavors and toppings, giving guests all kinds of creative options to satisfy those decadent cravings. The yogurt shop also offers bottled water for 50 cents, Tombstone Sarsaparilla, sports drinks and juice, along with a few souvenir items. Big supporters of the Tombstone Animal Shelter, there is a “doggie” donation jar prominently displayed on the shop’s front counter where all shelter contributions are matched by Sweet Memories. In addition, the shop is pet friendly, so it’s not uncommon for customers to wander in with dogs in tow.

From its 1880s clad characters to the historic sites, gift shops, saloons and restaurants, there’s a lot to see and do in Tombstone, the “town too tough to die.”
Boothill Graveyard
Buried in this historic graveyard are some of Tombstone’s notorious characters as well as its early pioneers. Boothill Graveyard served as the town’s burial plot from 1878 until 1884. It first opened as the Tombstone Cemetery, but the name was later changed to Boothill Graveyard, a reflection of the roaring mining town’s wilder days. Alongside the good citizens of Tombstone’s wild past lie the outlaws, gunslingers and murderers.
Boothill holds the remains of Billy Clanton, Frank McLaury and Tom McLaury of the O.K. Corral gunfight that took place between the Earp brothers, with Doc Holliday and the cowboys. Three men were killed in the gun battle, while three others were wounded. More than 250 are buried in the cemetery, with the wooden grave markers serving as a walking tour. From shootings, to suicides, to murders, stabbings, lynchings and hangings, the markers are a grim reminder of the town’s turbulent history.
A visitor center at the entrance of the graveyard houses an information desk and gift shop where a booklet called “Boothill Graveyard: A Descriptive List of more than 250 Graves in Boothill” is available for $2. The booklet provides an excellent walking guide of the cemetery.
Boothill Graveyard is located at 408 Highway 80 and is open from 7:30 a.m. to dusk. While admission is free, donations are requested.
Bird CaGe theatre
Described in an 1882 New York Times article as “The wildest, wickedest night spot between Basin Street and the Barbary Coast,” the Bird Cage Theatre and museum has managed to preserve the wild side of Tombstone’s history.
Opening its doors in 1881, The Bird Cage featured a stage for live performances, a gambling hall and house of prostitution. Its basement is the site of the longest running poker game in history where claims are that $10,000,000 changed hands over an eight year period. From the time it opened its doors, the Bird Cage operated continuously, 365 days a year, for the next eight years.
When Tombstone’s silver boom died, so did the Bird Cage. It closed in 1889 and sat empty, shuttered and untouched until purchased in 1934. With its contents left intact, the building has been a tourist attraction since reopening.
Tours reveal rooms just as they were more than 100 years ago, complete with original furnishings, the 14 cribs lining the gambling hall where ladies of the evening entertained their clients and 20 bullet holes embedded in the building’s walls.
Located at 535 E. Allen St., the Bird Cage is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Tours are available and there is a gift shop at the entrance of the building. For information, call 520-457-3421.
Good enouGh mine tour
While Tombstone has been glamorized for its legendary figures, gunfights and saloons, to truly experience the town’s history, you’ll need to go underground.
The Good Enough Mine, discovered by Tombstone’s founder Ed Schieffelin, is a subterranean attraction that tells visitors about the town’s true historic foundation. Owners Shirley and Andree De Journett opened the mine to the public in 2007, providing guests with walking tours of the restored 1878 silver mine.
The tour features spectacular mineral displays, huge rooms, winding tunnels and a glimpse into Tombstone’s history as a silver mining boomtown, earning the accolades of visitors from around the world.
Following Schieffelin’s first rich ore strikes in 1877, word of mining opportunities in the area traveled fast and Tombstone became one of the richest mining camps during that time. It wasn’t long before Tombstone became one of the fastest growing cities between St. Louis and San Francisco, with an estimated population of 15,000.

But in 1906, when gold replaced silver as the country’s standard, silver prices plummeted, and with it, Tombstone’s population. Today, the town survives on tourism, with Good Enough Mine, located at Fifth and Toughnut streets and its subterranean tours one of the historic spots that visitors frequent.

oK Corral
It’s impossible to visit Tombstone without stepping onto the hallowed grounds of the world’s most famous gunfight.
The OK Corral, located at 326 Allen St., is the famous historical site where Wyatt, Virgil and Morgan Earp, along with Doc Holliday, fought the Clantons and McLaurys in that notorious gun battle of Oct. 26, 1881. There are daily reenactments at the OK Corral featuring shows at 12:30, 2 and 3:30 p.m.
Visitors can stand beside life-sized figures of the eight gunfighters, located on the very spot where the gunfight started, based on information provided by Wyatt Earp.
The 30 second showdown that left three dead and Virgil and Morgan Earp wounded, has been glamorized by Hollywood and made Tombstone an Old West tourist destination with visitors from around the country and world.
Admission is $10 per person for the live gunfights, or $6 to tour the property, without the gunfights. Children 6 and under are free.
C.S. Fly Photo Studio, located on the OK Corral property, can be seen as part of the admission into the OK Corral. Camillus Fry is the photographer that accompanied General George Crook to the historic negotiations with Geronimo in March, 1886. While Fly’s photographs of that meeting with the Apache tribe are his most famous, Fly Studio is credited for creating one of the best pictorial records of early Tombstone that exists.
Tombstone Historama, hailed as a “must see” orientation of the dramatic events that made Tombstone famous, offers a 30-minute narrative of Tombstone’s history.
Narrated by actor Vincent Price, the story features the town’s silver boom, the1880s fire that destroyed nearly the entire town, OK Corral gunfight, assassination of Morgan Earp and much more. Located at 326 Allen St., shows are every 30 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A ticket into the OK Corral pays for the Historama.

Now operated by the City of Tombstone and the Tombstone Chamber of Commerce, the Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park, built in 1882, is a two-story Victorian style building that once housed the offices of Cochise County’s sheriff, recorder, treasurer and board of supervisors, along with its jail and courtroom.
Today, the distinguished, 12,000 square foot structure is a museum that tells the region’s story of miners, cattlemen and homesteaders, along with the rough characters that were part of the Old West. Visitors view a reproduction of the 1880s courtroom and sheriff’s office and are invited into the courtyard where a replica of the gallows, representing seven hangings, is on display. The courthouse features thousands of exhibits, intriguing photos, old newspaper articles and artifacts that tell the story of Cochise County’s development, along with Tombstone’s heyday as a mining town. With the courthouse as its hub, Tombstone served as the county seat until 1929, when voters decided to move it to Bisbee.
Located at 223 Toughnut St., the Tombstone Courthouse is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $5 for those 14 and older. For information, call 520-457-3311.
