Hwy 64 from French River to Marten River
If there ever was a definition of twisty country road, this is
it. South of Hwy 11, Hwy 64 has fast curves and rapidly rolling hills, while north of the Trans-Canada, it’s longer sweepers with very light traffic. Even when heading home from the New Liskeard Bikers Reunion, I’d go out of my way to take this road home, just for the sheer thrill.
Hwy 144 from Sudbury to Timmins
This road didn’t always figure very highly in my rankings, mainly because
it was chewed up, full of frost heaves and tar strips, and could be downright scary on any of its many rapidly escalating corners (especially the closer you get to Sudbury) – however, those mad wizards at the Ministry of Transportation have seen fit to re-pave the entire road from stem to stern, and it’s a thing of beauty.
66 from Matachewan to Hwy 11
This is one of those roads that you’ll only find in Northern Ontario. Take a zig-zagging bunny trail of a logging road, and then pave it. It’s a blast to ride, even if the scenery isn’t a show stopper. Do this as a loop with the Elk Lake Road (AKA Hwy 65). You won’t be disappointed.
Hwy 6 from Espanola to Manitoulin Island
Anyone who’s done the Georgian Bay Coastal Loop looks forward to this road. Going south from the Trans-Canada, it has long sweepers, towering rock cuts, and
views of the massive dam just outside Espanola. When you get closer to the Island, you’ll get tighter curves over dozens of puddle-like lakes, and a turnoff for the hair-raising Willisville Road. Not to mention the swing bridge, the only road link to Manitoulin Island.

It’s no secret that I love riding in Northern Ontario. It’s much more than a job for me, it’s almost a spiritual connection – the open spaces, the miles offorests, lakes and rivers, the small towns and the bigcities of Timmins, Sudbury, Temiskaming Shores, North Bay and Mattawa.
At only three and a half hours from Toronto, it’s also a place that I ride frequently enough to know where all the good roads are, and I’ll go out of my way time and again to make sure I get them in each season. While the region is so vast, you’ll have no trouble finding more than ten roads to ride, but these are the ones that never fail to put a smile on my face.

MOTORCYCLE ROADS IN NORTHEASTERN ONTARIO
TOP TEN
Who Says
There’s No Good
Riding in Our Region?
1
7
6
5Hwy 63 from North Bay to Québec
Riding through the little town of Eldee from North Bay, this integral part of the Temiskaming Loop offers an incredible view of the Ottawa River as you ride down a ridge overlooking the river that separates Ontario and Québec. If you’re headed north on this road, there’s a great little dirt turnoff just big enough for two bikes to stop for a photo op.
Hwy 637 to Killarney
OK, so the road quality isn’t amazing, but there are enough twists, the scenery is pretty good – Lake St. George is probably one of my favourite rest stops in Ontario – but the village of Killarney with the Killarney Mountain Lodge and the Sportsman’s Inn Resort & Marina make it so worth the ride. And, of course, there’s Herbert Fisheries. Some say they make the best fish & chips in Ontario.
Hwy 542 on Manitoulin Island
Probably one of the only roads in the province with banked corners. The pavement is the chip-tar, but that does mean plenty of grip and maybe some premature tire wear, but who’s counting.
Willisville Road
While this road is pretty short, it’s a special one. Not many roadsin Ontario can give you a nice technically twisty ride while running you around a small mountain with epic views from highabove the surrounding landscape. It might be an oversell, but it’s fun.
10
8
9 Hwy 11B through Cobalt to Temiskaming Shores
While this certainly isn’t the most technical road, it does offer the best unobstructed views of Lake Temiskaming. It’s got new pavement in most sections, and with a slight detour to Haileybury, you can ride out to see the unfinished
Grant mansion on the shores of Lake Temiskaming.
Hwy 560 to Elk Lake
While other roads might be twistier, better paved, or have more eye-opening scenery, this is one of those zen roads you can ride and just bliss out on. I particularly like the switchbacks through town in Gowganda – I’m sure the OPP has had lots of fun slowing people down through there. And the Elk Lake Eco Centre has some of the best food in the North, hands down.
Mike is an avid motorsports enthusiast – you’ll find him at home on ATVs, snowmobiles,
motorcycles and powerboats.
So that’s my top 10!There are plenty of other roads to explorein this region, and lots of dirt if you’re an off-road rider. You can have fun combining these into one giant tour loop, or check out RideTheNorth.com to do one of their pre-built loops, like the Temiskaming Loop or Georgian Bay Coastal Route.

MOTORCYCLE MAP AND TOUR GUIDE
It’s easy to get here, but hard to leave.
Let the open road lead you to Northeastern Ontario, where BIG adventures and lasting memories are just a short ride away.
Highway 400/69 and Highway 11 connect the region with Southern Ontario and Highway 17 provides an East/West corridor, meaning the region is less than four hours from Toronto, Ottawa or Sault Ste. Marie.

MANITOULIN ISLAND CIRCLE TOURTOUR COLOUR: LIGHT BLUE TOTAL DISTANCE: 260KM
It’s island time. Duly known as the World’s Largest Freshwater Island, Manitoulin is home to some of Canada’s best boating and incredible motorcycle touring.
Islands typically have their own culture and pace and Manitoulin is no stranger, running on its own schedule. As soon as you depart the Chi-Cheemaun ferry or cross the swing bridge you will feel it: little traffic, scenic secondary roads, and small town charm.
Riding on Manitoulin is about exploring with no set agenda. Having a coffee at a local shop, photographing your bike at a lighthouse and visiting Bridal Veil Falls. Allow at least two days to see it all; its size will surprise you.
GREAT LEGENDS CIRCLE TOURTOUR COLOUR: RED TOTAL DISTANCE: 1350KM
This journey into Ontario’s high north is definitely a ride you need to check off your list. You will visit Sudbury, Timmins, Cochrane, Kirkland Lake, Temiskaming Shores, Mattawa and North Bay.
On this trip, you’ll get up close and personal with the Northern Ontario landscape and witness some incredible roads and roadside scenery. You’ll be introduced to the fabled Northern hospitality, and you’ll experience unique attractions.
If you take the time, you can swim with Polar Bears, get up close and personal with moose, bison and elk at the Cedar Meadows Wilderness Tour in Timmins, broaden your understanding of the natural world at Science North and Dynamic Earth, and see pieces of history and culture at the many museums, heritage sites, and historical buildings.
Allow five to seven days for this trip to see it all.
GEORGIAN BAY COASTAL ROUTETOUR COLOUR: ORANGE TOTAL DISTANCE: 1400KM
Georgian Bay, considered Ontario’s 6th Great Lake, is the kind of ride that gives you a very good impression of how diverse the Ontario landscape really is.
Winding atop the Niagara Escarpment, through the La Cloche Mountains, along the Canadian Shield and alongside two of Canada’s biggest freshwater beaches, this ride frames this huge, stunning body of fresh water.
The Chi-Cheemaun Ferry that connects Manitoulin Island to Tobermory is a unique way to see the bay, with your bike tied down safely below you. This route gets you as close to the shore as possible but some of the best views are just a short walk up a lookout tower, or one of the many trails. Take a glass bottom boat ride, a floatplane tour, or even a sea kayak excursion to experience it.
Georgian Bay can be done on its own or be included as part of a larger Northeastern Ontario road tour. Allow a minimum of three days for this ride.
LAKE TEMISKAMING CIRCLE TOURTOUR COLOUR: YELLOW TOTAL DISTANCE: 450KM
Two Provinces, plus three cultures, equals one very memorable ride around Lake Temiskaming and its wide collection of river valleys and historic villages.
Water has played a significant role in not only shaping this landscape, but also in shaping the lives of its inhabitants. Indigenous peoples and explorers travelled these same routes by voyageur canoe and not chromed out V-twins. You can salute their spirits for finding this place as you twist and wind your way around the lake. Highlights include the Temagami Fire Tower Lookout, Cobalt Mining Museum, World’s Shortest Covered Bridge in Latchford, Fort Témiscamingue National Historic Site, and Myrt’s Family Restaurant in Mattawa.
This is a two day ride that will see you eating your way around the lake with several tempting stops for fresh baking, ice cream, and legendary poutine.
LAKE NIPISSING CIRCLE TOURTOUR COLOUR: GREEN TOTAL DISTANCE: 300KM
Anchored by the historic waterfront of the city of North Bay, the Lake Nipissing Circle Tour winds and twists its way around one of Ontario’s largest inland lakes. Lake Nipissing is a legendary hotspot for fishing in all four seasons. Family-run lodges and camps dot the shoreline and provide everything you need to catch the big one. So,no need to pack that tackle box, rod and net on your bike.
This exciting route follows two-thirds secondary roads with little traffic, small towns and interesting stops such as Board’s Honey Farm, Callandar Bay, the Lake Nipissing Scenic Lookouts, French River Interpretive Centre and the North Bay Waterfront.
Allow a full day for this ride. North Bay is the perfect hub to begin and end this trip.
