FREE TUTORING WEB SITESWeb Site Academic Strengths Needs Improvement
Hippocampus.org
It offers help on 10 high schoolsubjects, such as biology and U.S.history. Excellent written audio, andvideo tutorials have review questionssprinkled throughout. You’ll also findinteractive aids for 100-plustextbooks.
While the site providedgood answers for five ofour nice samplequestions, it lacks asection on Englishgrammar. Also missing:foreign languagesupport.
Cliffsnotes.com
Beyond literature guides (though, yes,the site has nearly 200 free ones),cliffsnotes.com has info for grades 7and up, including basic French andSpanish and 10 sciences. The CheatSheets are great for pre-test review.
The tutorials are mainlyoverviews, and mightnot be thoroughenough to clear up astudent’s confusionabout a concept. Thesite lacks practiceproblems to reinforcelessons.
Intmath.com
A great resource for high schoolmath: Concepts of algebra, probability, calculus, and othersubjects are explained clearly andthoroughly. The search engine tracksdown topics (say: scientific notation)quickly.
Some of IntMath’spages are clutteredwhich can makenavigation a littlefrustrating. Prominentadvertisements can bedistracting.
Sosmath.com
This site for grades 9 and up teachesby examples—you’ll find tons ofproblems and step-by-step solutionsfor trigonometry, calculus, and more.Practice quizzes let students learn bytrial and error.
While it touched oneach of our threesample math questions, the lessons mainlyprovided only a briefoverview, which maynot be enough for achild who needs moreexplanation.
Owl.english.purdue.edu
The Purdue UniversityOnline Writing Lab (OWL) offers 200free lessons and guides for grades 7and up. You’ll find advice onstructuring a thesis or essay, doingresearch, and avoiding compositionpitfalls.
Surprisingly, it lacks adictionary andthesaurus. And whilemany topics arecovered, not all lessonsgo into as much depthas we would have liked.
Grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/index.htm
The site concentrates mainly on themechanics of writing and less on thecreative process of composing apaper. Detailed pages explain partsof speech, sentence structure, andparagraph flow.
With 170-plus quizzes, there’s plenty ofpractice, but in sometests the user’s wronganswers aren’t noted: itcan be annoying toscroll up and down tolearn from mistakes.
PhysicsclassRoom.com
The superbly organized site givestutorials and excellent multimediaexamples (video and audio) thatdemystify concepts of physics. Thesample problems are illustrated andclearly explained.
At press time, the sitelacked a searchengine, so homing in onone topic wastime-consuming.However there are
plans to add a searchfunction soon.
Khan AcademyKhanacademy.com
This highly popular website includesalmost every subject imaginable fortutorials which includes PSAT/SATtutorials, and it’s all free. Just createa login.
It has ALMOST everysubject, but not everysubject and you mayhave to search to findthe topic you areworking on.
