Two New American Born Blesseds
Fr. Solanus Casey and Fr. Stanley Rother
2
Dear Parishioners,
February 10 at 6 PM: WDD = Winter Dinner Dance at the Grade School Auditorium! Music is provided by the Purple Hearts Band. Our theme this year is Mardi Gras! Please consider joining us for this fun event.
We have a new worship leader for our Sunday, 5:30 PM Life Teen band. Her name is Renee Paladini. She is a graduate of our grade school, Class of 2013. She graduated from Glendale High in 2017 and she currently goes to school at Cal Poly Pomona where she resides during the week. She has been singing with our band for quite awhile now, and she is a real gift to the church. Please welcome Renee Paladini in her new role as worship leader for this Mass each Sunday night!
As I mentioned last week, we have two new American born saints in the works. Both Father Stanley Rother and Father Solanus Casey are now proclaimed “blessed” in the church. Last week I wrote a little bit about Blessed Stanley Rother. This week I’d like to touch on the other “rock star”: Blessed Solanus Casey.
Blessed Solanus Casey lacked direction in his life, had a marriage proposal rejected and had difficulties in the seminary as well. He later entered the Capuchin seminary in Detroit. He was ordained a priest; however, due to his poor grades, he was not permitted to hear confessions or to preach. He was made a porter at the monastery. He served this low level position with humility and obedience in a quest for holiness. This position had its advantages. Because he was free of the usual priestly responsibilities, he had more time for the people, listening and touching troubled souls. He soon gained a reputation for sanctity and gentleness and compassion. His intercession occasionally resulted in miraculous healings.
He was extremely popular and in demand. He was swarmed with requests at the door, by mail and by telephone. He was an empathetic man who was attentive to the needs of his people. He was also a huge help to the poor and founded a soup kitchen in Detroit. Because so many people wanted to meet with him and due to his miracle working reputation, his superiors moved him around the country in hopes of giving the poor man some respite. Still, many, many people managed to seek his help. He was also quietly dealing with a skin disorder.
Father Solanus was never a member of the hierarchy. He never had a leadership position with his Capuchin order. He continued to be docile to the Holy Spirit, obeying the orders of his superiors. Apparently, his superiors could be quite harsh. He nonetheless touched the lives of so many people. Reportedly, close to 20,000 people attended his funeral services. Blessed Solanus, pray for us!! May we emulate your example and strive to be saints!!
Peace, love, and prayers,
Fr. Jim Bevacqua, Pastor

Eucharistic Adoration From Letters to a Brother Priest, by Rev. Fr. Vincent Martin Lucia and Rev. Msgr. Josefino Ramirez
There is one university in Houston, Texas that teaches Thomistic philosophy and theology. It’s run
by the Basilian fathers and is called St. Thomas University. There is also in Texas a very famous
man who is a legend in golf and played in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Some say that he is the greatest
golfer who ever lived. His name is Ben Hogan.
One night coming back from a golf tournament, Ben Hogan had a terrible automobile accident. He hit
another car “head on”. He almost died. The doctors said that he would never walk again. Through
sheer determination, he not only learned to walk again, but went on to win four U.S. opens and
another three major tournaments.
I have an American friend who grew up in Texas. Since he was a teenager in the 50’s, he has been playing golf. Ben
Hogan was his hero. All his life he read every book ever printed on Ben Hogan, everything about his life, his times,
and all of his instructional material.
Then one day it finally happened. This friend of mine was in Fort Worth, Texas on a business trip and was invited to
lunch at the Colonial Country Club. There he got to meet Ben Hogan in person!
This was in June of 1991. Almost forty years had passed by since my friend first heard of Ben Hogan. Now here he
was sitting with “Master” himself, listening to every word, totally awed in being in the presence of greatness.
My friend could hardly wait to tell all of his friends, as well as all of those who were not his friends. It did not
matter. Anyone who he talked to he was just bursting with excitement to tell them that he met Ben Hogan. Friends or
strangers, it did not matter. He told them that for forty-five minutes he talked with Ben Hogan in person.
Should we not be just as excited at being able to be with Jesus Himself in the Blessed Sacrament? Think about it,
Thomas. Was this not what the Angelic Doctor was talking about? My friend had read and heard everything about
Ben Hogan, but it could not compare to a single moment of being in his company.
Should we not also be totally awed in being in the presence of greatness for each single moment we spend in the
presence of the Blessed Sacrament? He is the Teacher, the Master, the Creator of the entire Universe.
St. Thomas treats his theology why it is that appreciation for the Holy Eucharist diminishes and why we take for
granted the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The scholarly saint speaks of the inseparable relationship
between consuming and adoring, between communion of the Holy Eucharist and adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament. He says that unless we adore what we consume, we lose sight and appreciation of what we are
consuming.
In other words, the Eucharist is not a thing but a person. Unless we are willing to take time out and develop a
personal relationship with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, we lose sight of the lovable person of Jesus in the Blessed
Sacrament and the Holy Eucharist diminishes in value in our sight.
St. Thomas spent hour after hour in profound adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Because of his love for the
Blessed Sacrament he is called the Angelic Doctor. His love for Jesus in the Eucharist inspired all of the Benediction
Hymns like “Tantum Ergo.”

Music Ministry Happy New Year! It has been a wonderful two and a half months with you all. I have
enjoyed getting to know many of you during mass and between masses. Your
kindness and generosity has touched me and fueled my love for the sacred liturgy. If I
still have not met you, please come by to introduce yourself; I would love to meet you
and hear your story!
The children’s choirs have begun! However, I still have seven spots available for the
Seraphim Choir which meets on Thursdays at 3:15pm. The kids are grades 3-5.
They will be singing for the 9:30am mass once a month and follow a steady curriculum of
choral music and music education. Please email me at [email protected] to enroll your child.
The Guadalupanos Spanish Choir has begun rehearsing on Tuesday nights at 6pm. We have been invited to sing for
the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Encuentro at the Pasadena Convention Center on January 27th. Please email me at
the above address to find out more or come on Tuesdays at 6pm to the choir room in the elementary school to be part
of this event.
Auditions are being scheduled to join the St. Cecilia Choir. If you are a voice student or have singing experience and
are interested in challenging yourself with beautiful music, you are invited to send an email to schedule an audition. It
is also an opportunity to deepen your faith by integrating the words of the sacred liturgy and messages of our wise
priests into your souls through song while also making lifelong friends.
The Simbayanan’ Choir is currently rehearsing on Fridays at 7pm and is welcoming new singers at this time. The
music consists of beautiful sacred music by classical composers as well as traditional Filipino song. Please email Mr.
Tom Makiling at [email protected] to find out more or come on Fridays at 7pm to the choir room in the
elementary school.
Lastly, all of the choirs are combining for our Lenten concert on March 24th. Tickets will be on sale in a few weeks and
will be announced during mass. You are invited to come and witness the sounds of Lent in all its heart-wrenching
beauty, conviction, and mortality.
Thank you all for your kind words. I look forward to what opportunities 2018 will bring for us to share music together as
the body of Christ. Soli Deo Gloria.
