Preface
This volume contains the papers presented at IWAAL 2012: the 4th Interna-tional Workshop on Ambient Assisted Living held during December 3–5, 2012,in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain). The IWAAL conference is an expanding event thatemerged in 2009. This event responds to the European Union initiative “Am-bient Assisted Living Joint Program (AALJP),” an ICT funding framework for“ageing well” that started in 2008. The AALJP aims to develop solutions thatincrease independence for dependent and older people, and also for their formalor informal carers. It is very important to address these solutions providing waysfor older people to remain active and connected to society.
Home-care is a specific challenge involved in ambient assisted living. Par-ticularly, the European Union focused their last call for proposals (AAL 5) onan important dimension of the topic of “ICT-Based Solutions for (Self-) Man-agement of Daily Life Activities of Older Adults at Home.” Home-care was themain topic of the IWAAL 2012 edition. Consequently, we received a significantnumber of contributions that aim at enhancing older adults’ quality of life. Theproposed products, systems, and services enable and sustain older people tocontinue managing their daily activities in their home.
Beyond home-care, the IWAAL proceedings also include research works de-scribing progress on other research topics for AAL such as human–computerinteraction at assistive environments, semantic modelling for realizing reactiveand proactive assistive environments, sensing, monitoring, and key applicationsfor AAL. Altogether, this fourth edition includes 58 research articles.
Finally, we would like to thank all the organizers (MAmI Research group,University of Deusto, CIC Tourgune and Technological University of Panama)and collaborators of this event (Vitoria-Gasteiz Council), together with the hardwork of the Program Committee members cross-reviewing all the submittedpapers.

Preface
The ubiquitous computing (UC) idea envisioned by Weiser in 1991 has recentlyevolved to a more general paradigm known as ambient intelligence (AmI). AmIrepresents a new generation of user-centric computing environments aiming tofind new ways to obtain a better integration of the information technology ineveryday life devices and activities.
AmI environments are integrated by several autonomous computational de-vices of modern life ranging from consumer electronics to mobile phones. Ideally, people in AmI environments do not notice those devices, but they benefit fromtheir provided services. Such devices are aware of the people present in thoseenvironments by reacting to their gestures, actions, and context. Recently theinterest in AmI environments has grown considerably owing to new challengesposed by society demanding highly innovative services such as vehicular ad hocnetworks (VANET), ambient assisted living (AAL), e-health, Internet of things, and home automation among others.
The International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intel-ligence celebrated its sixth edition. Since its first edition back in 2005 the eventhas grown significantly, as shown by its increasing number of participants andmore importantly its growing impact in the UbiComp community. This interna-tional conference has brought together the work of researchers from around theglobe in these disciplines, where half of the attendants have come from LatinAmerican countries. This event has yielded several special issues in JCR publi-cations, five special issues in this series, denoting the increasing influence of theworks presented in it on the UbiComp literature.
The main focus of this new edition of the conference has been to explorehow AmI can contribute toward smarter but still more sustainable environments(e.g., smart cities, smart cars, eco-aware device orchestration and so on). Thisalso explains why it has been celebrated in the 2012 European Green Capital, namely, Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain.
Beyond sustainable computing, the UCAmI 2012 proceedings also includeresearch works describing progress on other key research topics for AmI such as:human-environment mobile-mediated (through NFC or AR) interaction, artifi-cial intelligence techniques to foster user-and context-aware environment adap-tation, future Internet trends such as social networks analysis, linked data orcrowd-sourcing applied to AmI, Internet-connected object ecosystems collabo-rating to give place to smarter environments (in cities, cars, tourist sites or formore intelligent transport) among others. Altogether, this sixth edition includes70 research articles.
VI Preface
Finally, we would like to thank all organizers (i.e., MAmI Research group,University of Deusto, CIC Tourgune and Technological University of Panama),and collaborators (i.e., Vitoria-Gasteiz Council), together with the reviewers(members of the Program Committee) for helping us by contributing to a high-quality event and proceedings book on the topics of ubiquitous computing andambient intelligence.
