    One o f th e most comm on, but least thought about sources of toxicity in our bodies comes from the many

    toiletries and cosmetics we use on a daily basis. W ithout realizing it, many people are either ingesting orabsorbing through their skin many toxic chem icals.     THE DANGERS OF DR Y CLEANING

    D ry cleaning your clothes may be hazardous to your health. Since the 1950s, most dry cleaners have reliedon a chem ical solvent called perchloroethylene, o r "perc" to clean y our clothes. T his highly toxic chemicalhas been shown to have harmful effects on the nervous system and all major organs. E xposure to perc cancause dizziness, respiratory problems, and unconsciousness. It has been linked to nervous system, kidney,liver, and reproductive disorders, as well as a higher risk of cancer amon g dry cieaning workers. In fact, the

    International A gency for Research in Can cer (LARC) classifies perc as a "probable human carcinogen."Perc residue from freshly cleaned clothes can cause throat, eye, and nose irritation. L ower levels, like thosefound in a closet containing dry cleaned clothes, can affect your mood, memory, and coordination. A ccordingto the U .S. E nvironmen tal Protection A gency (EPA ) , over 100 million A merican s are at risk from elevatedlevels of perc in their homes due to released fume s from dry cleaned clothing. An EPA study revealed thatbringing freshly dry cleaned clothing into a house c an result in perc levels that exceed the gu idelin es forindoor air.

    The maximum safe level of perc is 100 parts per million; however, one study m easure d 350 parts per millioninside a car just fifteen minutes after a typical order of dry-cleaned clothes had been placed in it.

    DRY C L E A N I N G A LT E R N AT I V E S

    1. W et Cleaning: this chlorine and toxic-free option is a new method of professional cleaning. It is a high-techcombination of hand washing with natu ral soaps, spot cleaning, steaming, and drying that is as effective asdry cleaning and costs the same. Check in your area to find a dry cleaner which uses water-based cleaninginstead of perc-based cleaning, or encourage your local cleaner to start using this method.     2. H and wash: many fabrics that say "dry clean only" do not require it. M anufacturers often put this on the labelto prevent liability because they must accept the return if a garment shrinks or loses its shape. Dry cleaning haslong been the only guaranteed method of cleaning that prevents this, s o clothing manufacturers unnecessarilylabel garmen ts as "dry clean only." In many cases you can safely hand wash "dry clean only" items,

They are designed to reach temperatures up to 190degrees which results in deep cleaning of your clothing, without harsh chemical additives such as bleach.     4. Allow your clothes to ventilate: If you must continue to dry clean your clothes, cut down on any after-effectsby taking them out of the plastic bag as soon as you get home and hanging them outside or in a ventilatedarea for awhile before wearing them.

    3 . Recycle

    Recycling turns materials that would otherwise become waste into valuable resources. In addition, it generates

    a host of environmental, financial, and social benefits. Materials like glass, metal, plastics, and paper arecollected, separated and sent to facilities that can process them into new materials or products.

    Recycling is one of the best environmental success stories of the late 20th century. Recycling, includingcomposting, diverted 72 million tons of material away from landfills and incinerators in 2003, up from 34miliion tons in 1990. By 2002, almost 9,000 curbside collection programs served roughly half of the Americanpopulation. Curbside programs, along with drop-off and buy-back centers, resulted in a diversion of about 30percent of the nation's solid waste in 2001.
