Program goal : 50 GWe of installed geothermal capacity by 2030.
Enhanced Geothermal Systems
Objective: Investigate advanced reservoir stimulation techniques for EGS in various geological and geographic settings throughout the United States.
Deployment Strategy: Select up to ten new EGS systems demo projects in various geologic formations and geographic regions, including green fields that will quantitatively demonstrate and validate stimulation techniques that successfully sustain sufficient fluid flow and heat extraction rates for 5-7 years that produce up to 50 MWe per year per project site /geothermal reservoir.

Geothermal Demonstrations (G1b)
Objective: Demonstrate geothermal energy production from oil and gas fields, geopressured fields, and low temperature resources throughout the United States.
Deployment Strategy: Funding opportunity announcement opened on May 27, 2009 to seek applications from consortia of industry, academia and Federal Labs. DOE expects to select up to 20 new geothermal power generation projects.
Funding: $50M in Recovery Act funds to rapidly commercialize technologies and reduce upfront risk
EGS Research and Development (G2)
Objective: Accelerate EGS technology development through cost-shared R&D that will allow EGS to be a major contributor for baseload electricity generation.
Deployment Strategy: Open funding opportunity announcement (FOA) in 23 topic areas for academia, non-profit entities, for-profit entities, state/local governments, and Indian tribes. DOE selected 11 national laboratories under a lab call that closed February 18, 2009.
Funding: $80M in Recovery Act funds to rapidly commercialize technologies and reduce upfront risk: $23 million lab call and $57 million for industry projects.

• Architecture:– Assessing and consolidating all geothermal data in a publicly
accessible database will enable lower risk/cost deployment of geothermal energy.
– The data system architecture and initial population are currently underway: the Geothermal Data Consortium, led by Boise State, has been selected to design and implement the NGDS.
• Geothermal Data Development, Collection, and Maintenance :– Develop, collect, and maintain data for all 50 states for the
National Geothermal Data System.– Provide funding for state geologists, University professors,
graduate students, as well as National Laboratories to update and maintain their data collections.
