ACCESSIBLE Personas

Page 3: Using Personas to capture Assistive Technology and Accessibility Needs of People with Disabilities

User-centred design

• Design approach– User is starting point, not

technology– Users are actively involved

in research & design activities

Page 4: Using Personas to capture Assistive Technology and Accessibility Needs of People with Disabilities

User-centred design

• Added values:– Close match between user needs and solutions– Increased user acceptance– Early identification of usability problems– Optimal user experience

UCD aims in ÆGIS

Following a holistic User Centred Design approach, ÆGIS aims to ensure that user needs:

– are identified for several user groups– are considered throughout the entire project

Page 6: Using Personas to capture Assistive Technology and Accessibility Needs of People with Disabilities

UCD process in ÆGIS

Four phases:

1. Gathering user needs2. Specifying user requirements3. From concept to working prototype4. Field trials

Page 7: Using Personas to capture Assistive Technology and Accessibility Needs of People with Disabilities

UCD process in ÆGIS - Phase 1

Gathering User Needs - Analyses of users, tasks & contexts

Page 8: Using Personas to capture Assistive Technology and Accessibility Needs of People with Disabilities

UCD process in ÆGIS - Phase 2

Specifying user needs - Translating insights into usable formats

Page 9: Using Personas to capture Assistive Technology and Accessibility Needs of People with Disabilities

ÆGIS - user groups

• End users of Assistive Technologies and ÆGIS accessible applications, experiencing one or more of the following mild to severe impairments; – Blind and low-vision users– Motor impairment users (upper limb)– Cognitive impairment users (including learning

difficulties)– Hearing impairment users– Speech/communication impairment users

• All groups also consider people with disabilities of all ages, so including the older people

Page 10: Using Personas to capture Assistive Technology and Accessibility Needs of People with Disabilities

UCD challenges in ÆGIS - user groups

• Groups of end users are heterogeneous:– Severity of impairment– Nature of impairment– Co-morbidity

• Cultural differences

Page 11: Using Personas to capture Assistive Technology and Accessibility Needs of People with Disabilities

Personas

• Fictitious character• Representation of target users:

Characteristics, problems, needs, wishes, likes, dislikes, …

• Based on data of real users

Page 12: Using Personas to capture Assistive Technology and Accessibility Needs of People with Disabilities

Personas – Why?

• Bring developers closer to the beneficiaries they develop applications for– Make user requirements tangible– Bring target group to life, create empathy– “Someone to design for”– Keep user needs in mind during entire the process of

design & development

Personas in ÆGIS

• 17 personas– 15 end users– 2 professionals

• Five sections:– Bio– Technology use– Problems– Needs & wants– Last month…

Personas in ÆGIS – Applied in ACCESSIBLE project

• ACCESSIBLE personas– New ones (13)

• Derived from the findings of the ACCESSIBLE survey and extracted requirements

– Also based partially on the ÆGIS Personas.

• 3 sections:– Bio– Technology usage

• Problems• Solutions
